Heads up guys - Gina Carano will be interviewed on ESPN's E60 on Tuesday at 7 pm EST! She is being billed as an "mma machine". Should be interesting, hopefully they won't focus too much on her American Gladiators job.
and also Leban will not being fighting bisping since he has turned himself into police and will be in jail for 35 days (i think that's the right number). Jason Day will be taking his place!
more strong striking from shoji in the second, but yamazaki has more takedowns and control...
yamasaki by unanimous decision after a relatively uneventful match.
ya i have to agree, it was a good fight but nothing really exciting happened. Some really good shots and that arm bar escape was scary, i though he broke his arm at one point. Still not a bad fight to open the show with.

i'm a little disappointed in the lack of outfit for mayhem , but the breakdancing routine he came in with was pretty impressive. the long zebra pants underneath his trunks aren't bad either...haha
he starts out in typical mayhem fashion...stands in the middle of the ring looking at his opponent over his shoulder and then does a karate stance. lands a number of knees from there, but is hurt by one punch and goes for the takedown and plays with shibata on the ground from there out...
takes the time to wave to the fans and give the peace sign to the big screen. numerous knees and punches to shibata until the ref finally stops the fight. mayhem moves into the last spot for the MW tournament at DREAM 4.
mayhem then gets on the mic and actually knows a few japanese phrases! pays respect to shibata and the fans and tells them, in japanese, "i am a demon! i am a ghost! i am a super monkey!!
this was my 1st time seeing mayhem and he was very impressive. What kind of outfit does he usually come out to? The breakdancing was awsome. I love the knees to head but don't really understand why they don't allow for the elbows to a downed oppenent. They may cause more cuts i guess, but i still think they should be allowed.

the game plans were ckear, and kim actually works his way in to range to attempt a takedown, but a striking exchange ensues and kim gets the better of it! takes manhoef down and gets control on the ground. manhoef eventually muscles his way to side control, lands a couple of hammer fists, but then ko's kim on the ground with a knee. looks like the first knee knocked him out, but the second was a certain illegal blow to the back of the head. hard to tell which one was the one that ended the fight...
anyway, manhoef becomes the alternate for the MW tournament.
Daisuke Nakamura Vs. Bu Kyung Jung next...
go jung! i hope he finally gets a win here! two great fights so far against aoki and ishida, but both losses in game efforts.
man those knees are scary... another good fight from fighters that i don't know at all lol. I think Kim was out after the right hammer fist right after the fitst knee, he kind of turtled from it. Then the knee to the back of the head was just scary and the like 3 or 4 more hammer fists. Well, atleast we can't say the refs make quick stoppages lol

jung does not know how to be in a boring fight! jung lands some shots and some nice knees, even a flying one, and sets the tone for the first round by judo throw into back control and straight into an armbar. from there, reversals and numerous sub attempts by both guys. nakamura with leg locks and kimuras and jung with armbars...great match so far...to the second...
another early armbar escape, this time by jung and they come back to the feet where nakamura lands a right hand for a knockout. great fight, feel bad for jung. three excellent matches in his first three bouts and three hard fought losses.
yup another great fight, that's 3 in a row, this card has been really good so far. Jung seems to be a good up and comer but there are 2 things that i think are his downfalls, at this point. He seems to get too excited, like when he could have taken nakamura's back easily, he jumped almost all the way over it and landed up on his back. Maybe i'm wrong but that's what i saw. Also he doesn't have the strongest chin, although that punch to end the fight was perfect he did seem to get rocked a bit in the 1st round aswell (recovered very quickly). I could be wrong again, i haven't seen any of his other fights so i'm just going by what i saw on here.

like a busy sparring match, diaz comes out pawing the jab, mixing in some body shots and straights and has inoue circling backward for most of the beginning. diaz gets a takedown, then inoue gets a couple of curious "timeouts" to check his nose and another one? diaz eventually starts staying in the middle and trading with inoue and inoue's corner finally throws in the towel once diaz really starts getting the better of it against the ropes. inoue was pretty much out on his feet.
intermission, and then the LW tourney!!!
another great fight, gotta give inoue alot of credit he's a freaking warrior. I have no idea why you would want to stand and trade with a guy who is a way better striker than you. Even though nick's real strength is on the ground lol. The 2nd timeout was because of an illegal blow by Nick. It was for kicking a downed opponent to the head, it looked more like it was to the body but atleast there was no card pulled. Nick really needs to work on his defence, bas mentioned this a couple times in his commentary. He just stands and trades and if he faces a better (more powerful) striker he may be in a lot of trouble due to cuts and stoppages. Smarten up Nick! you have so much talent

kawajiri works more ground and pound for the second until buscape transitions to his back and has a late RNC attempt. not enough as kawajiri dominates for a unanimous decison.
Joachim Hansen Vs. Eddie Alvarez coming up!
well not a great fight, like the 1st of the night, it was good but nothing too exciting. still that's 4 great fights and 2 good ones, can't complain

what a fight! eddie comes out and gets another takedown, but hansen kicks him off strongly and tries for a sweet and quick armbar, but eddie escapes and ends up mounted but gets out. back to the feet and more strong exchanges. eddie gets another takedown and hansen gets him into a kimura using his legs and one arm!!! eddie gets out somehow and then gets caught when hansen drops into a kimura then transitions, when eddie rolls, to an armbar, which eddie escapes again! he finishes strongly with both fighters trading, but a high kick and a few strong hands from eddie seals a unanimous decision for him.
hansen asks for the mic after the match and says, "eddie, you are the toughest man i have ever fought, thank you. it is always nice to compete here in front a japanese auidience, it is good to win in front of a japanese audience, and it is also good to get beaten in front of a japanese audience. thank you eddie." great show of class and respect from both fighters at the end. i am very impressed with eddie alvarez!
FOTN!!! what a great fight, both of these guys are tough as nails. Hanson is incredible, he was rocked hard i don't even remember how many times and recovered everytime within a second. Eddie had some incredible sub defence and got out of some that he really shouldn't have. Absolutly great fight and good decision by the judges.
extremely respectful words after the fight by boths warriors... i'd like to see both of these guys fight again

uno comes out to smells like teen spirit! (techno version for japan, of course )
not what i expected! uno avoids five takedown attempts with incredible balance! uno uses his reach and outstrikes ishida, breaking his nose on a knee punch combo. ishida gets dropped a couple of times, but recovers. ishida finally succeeds on his sixth takedown attempt. uno goes for a kimura and ishida counters with an armbar, a la hughes vs. st-pierre part one. uno recognizes it, though, and they stand up. uno lands some more on the feet but gets taken down again and ishida gets his back. ishida tries for a rear naked choke near the end of the round. uno rolls out slickly to get on top with a couple of strikes to finish the round...
pretty good fight so far...
to the second and it's more of uno using his reach. ishida gets a takedown and it looks like uno is going for the same kimura but gets an incredible sweep to mount and takes ishida's back. immediately, he sinks in a rear naked choke with no hooks in!! finishes the fight when ishida taps. incredible finish. uno!!! i'm happy for him. he was a huge underdog, a lot of people wrote him off in the tournament, and he beats one of the top LW's in the world!
it's been great doing play by play tonight. thanks for chatting everyone...haha sounds like everyone enjoyed the show.
another good fight, uno landed some great punches like you said and was very impressive in this win. That sweep was perfect and he really deserved this win.
thanks for the play by play mookie, it was a great card and i'm very happy that i finally got HDNET. I still think the octogon is better for mma and that that 10minutes 1st round is insane, but dream was very good and i'm sure i'll be tuning into dream 4

well, conveniently, just after i posted that i'd missed it, i turned on the t.v. to find TUF rereuns, and caught both the Dante/Brandon fight that i slept though, and the last episode which i missed most of.... i think i was searching online for flights or something?
the Dante/Brandon fight was a bit of a let-down. I understand why Rampage was so upset... it was a tough call... Dante had control for most of the fight, but Brandon was way more active, even from the bottom... hmmm....
wow! Matt's knockout of Jeremy was pretty spectaular!! it was one of those total slow-motion moments... Jeremy.... falling.... and i was laughing pretty damn hard at Forrest's screaming (or squealing?) "where's the animal????" hahahaha....
I didn't find the second fight to be all that exciting either (did i miss something?)... but Rampage's little dance at the end was rather hilarious... perhaps an Eddie Murphy reference? but mookie, isn't it "i got some iiiiiiccce creeeaaam!"?? from Delerious?
oh! mookie. glad you liked the Dream show... sounds like everyone had a great time...
i think he did the ice cream in delerious! that's right! i forgot about that one. he did do the mc'donald's one in raw, though. so we can take our pick.
+1 on the thoughts from the fights. i think the last one was simply surprising in that it was a brawl from two of the last guys in the house they'd though they'd get one from. plus, it was "back and forth, back and forth", as rampage would say.
the DREAM show turned out to be better than expected, especially with the UNO win!!! i was very excited! eddie alvarez vs. joachim hansen is being mentioned now as a fight of the year candidate too.
hey civ, the 2nd fight was pretty good, i can't remember all of it right now, but both fighters came out swinging and ended in a nice KO (can't remember who won sorry). I just remember it being a slugfest.
I didn't read your write-ups about the dream show mookie, I just ordered HDNET today when i woke up (can't believe it was only 9 bux for all the hd channels, what the hell was i holding out for) so i'm going to watch it at 4 when they have the rerun. I hope it turned out good
sorry about the spoilers, leafs...i was hoping someone like yourself might show up and end up watching as well.
i see below you've started watching the show...enjoy!
Heads up guys - Gina Carano will be interviewed on ESPN's E60 on Tuesday at 7 pm EST! She is being billed as an "mma machine". Should be interesting, hopefully they won't focus too much on her American Gladiators job.
thanks releash. i'm hoping she's been training hard for the 31st. should be the fight of the night!
and also Leban will not being fighting bisping since he has turned himself into police and will be in jail for 35 days (i think that's the right number). Jason Day will be taking his place!
man, what a huge turnaround for jason day to go from known a little in canada, to winning in impressive fashion vs/ belcher and getting a standing o from the bell centre, to now being one of the main bouts on a PPV from england! all in a matter of months! good for him.
this was my 1st time seeing mayhem and he was very impressive. What kind of outfit does he usually come out to? The breakdancing was awsome. I love the knees to head but don't really understand why they don't allow for the elbows to a downed oppenent. They may cause more cuts i guess, but i still think they should be allowed.
he usually comes out with a mask of come sort, whether it be tribal, or scary or a wrestling mask...or some kind of outfit on. sometimes he throws money around to the fans too. i thought he'd make the most of the opportunity to entertain in japan because the fans love that. if he does well in the MW tournament i could see him becoming a star over there. still, the breakdancing and the post fight interview with a lot of japaenese probably won some fans over.
have to agree about the elbows. if they added elbows it would be the perfect rule set for me. i remember you said you like the stomps and soccer kicks from pride, but that was one of the rules i didn't like there. it's all a matter of preference i guess. so personally, i like the new rules, i just wish they would allow elbows. i just think it keeps an more active game on the ground, like the knees they are allowed to use...have to disagree with bas on the elbows.
oh, and if you can find GSP vs. Mayhem from UFC 52? i think...it's a really fun match to watch. i'll try to find it for you if you can't get it on youtube or something like that. i had it on the computer, but deleted it after montreal. haha it's mayhem's only UFC fight, it's just too bad he was facing GSP and at WW.
man those knees are scary... another good fight from fighters that i don't know at all lol. I think Kim was out after the right hammer fist right after the fitst knee, he kind of turtled from it. Then the knee to the back of the head was just scary and the like 3 or 4 more hammer fists. Well, atleast we can't say the refs make quick stoppages lol
yeah, two guys i don't know well either. i just know manhoef from fighting in K-1...but i don't follow that unless it's a big event usually.
apparently, manhoef said in an interview that he had tubes in his lungs for this fight?!?! i don't know how true that is, but apparently he suffered some chest and breathing problems after fighting a K-1 match vs. remy bojansky a couple of weeks ago.
after watching it again, i'd say you're right about the finish.
yup another great fight, that's 3 in a row, this card has been really good so far. Jung seems to be a good up and comer but there are 2 things that i think are his downfalls, at this point. I could be wrong again, i haven't seen any of his other fights so i'm just going by what i saw on here.
yeah, he definitiely has some refining to do. from what i remember from new year's eve, he had sinya aoki in a couple of really bad spots and probably would have submitted him if he weren't so flexible. then jung had a couple of escapes too. his second match with ishda was not as good, but still fun to watch. ishda was all over him with position but jung was still able to put him in some precarious positions. both of these fights were mostly grappling, sub attempts and takedowns.
true about the chin...this was the first time it was really tested. it sucks that he's 0-3, but two of the fights were aginst top five LW's in the world, so he can only get better from here. i'm sure the nakamura fight will be another learning experience and he can improve on the mistakes you mentioned.
another great fight, gotta give inoue alot of credit he's a freaking warrior. I have no idea why you would want to stand and trade with a guy who is a way better striker than you. Even though nick's real strength is on the ground lol. The 2nd timeout was because of an illegal blow by Nick. thanks for the clarification. i only watch that one once so far and didn't get the second stoppage. now it makes sense.
+1 on your and bas' thoughts! no cuts for nick this time, luckily!
FOTN!!! what a great fight, both of these guys are tough as nails. Hanson is incredible, he was rocked hard i don't even remember how many times and recovered everytime within a second. Eddie had some incredible sub defence and got out of some that he really shouldn't have. Absolutly great fight and good decision by the judges.
extremely respectful words after the fight by boths warriors... i'd like to see both of these guys fight again
i had to watch this one again! i really thought joachim was going to overwhelm him, but after the two met with blows to start the match, that set the tone for the rest. eddie has come a long way in a short period of time and hansen is one of the toughest LW's out there.
definitely check out more of jachim's matches. he's rarely in a boring one, and his knees are famous. his match with caol uno from K-1 HERO's is one of my favourites. i wasn't a fan of eddie's before as he seemed a bit one dimensional, but he showed a multi dimensionsal game that night! few would have predicted he'd be in the final four.
definitely great sportsmanship. i'd like to see more of that, as well as more alvarez and hansen!
i guess they have decided kawajiri will face alvarez in the semi's...with the performance he put in against joachim, i'd almost have to go with eddie on this one.
another good fight, uno landed some great punches like you said and was very impressive in this win.
UNO!
i'm still very happy uno won. i like ishida, even though most don't like his style, but he's got tenacity. a well deserved win. good way to put it.
i hope you didn't read anything before you watched, but thanks for the comments, leafs. it's good to get your perspective on this one. we are among the few, i think, when it comes to the ring vs. cage thing...haha...most people who like the japanese MMA only like the ring. i find it only creates more problems. again, a matter of preference i guess.
i'm really looking forward to the next shows! maybe we'll catch it at the same time next one, eh?
just finished watching the uno / ishida match again!
hadn't noticed the first time what an arsehole kawajiri was being after the match. first, he stared uno down, then when uno went to shake hands with ishida and his corner, kawajiri grabbed him by the hand and pulled him in to say something in his ear, then pushed his hand away.
during the post fight show, when you're supposed to thank the fans, kawajiri turned his back to the other competitors and made some kind of speech about K-1 and Pride, then stared uno down again as he gave up the microphone to uno. uno seemed cool as always...:)
i know they had a controversial draw in shooto that most thought kawajiri won, but uno is a pretty well respected guy. i'm hoping kawajiri will "get his" from either alvarez, if that's his next opponent or better yet, from uno himself!
Heads up guys - Gina Carano will be interviewed on ESPN's E60 on Tuesday at 7 pm EST! She is being billed as an "mma machine". Should be interesting, hopefully they won't focus too much on her American Gladiators job.
thanks again, releash!
there was a ten minute segment at the beginning, a round table discussion about the segment they are going to do. i guess this is the format for the show. it was interesting to hear the thoughts of the reporters at espn, as none of them really knew too much about the sport. someday they will as more of these segments get done and more shows get on the air, perhaps.
anyway, there were a couple of inaccuracies in the first part...
her father's name is glen carano, she was a muay thai fighter with a 12-1-1 record in muay thai and a championship in thailand, so she doesn't come from a kickboxing background. she began training at extreme couture to improve her ground game, not because she needed a big name to train her because she can't fight. they focus a lot on the role of her looks in her "celebrity" and selling tickets, as most people do, unfortunately. as many people think, they talk about her only being in the sport because of her looks, not realizing that she is already one of the best, if not THE best striker in women's mma.
also, the line "is she fighting a guy or a girl?" was pretty funny. anyway, goes to show there's a long way to go in terms of education for people about not only women's mma, but mma in general...
the second segment is called "serious crush" ...so yes releash, they did talk about gladiators. again, in this segment she was a muay thai fighter, not a kickboxer.
it was awesome to see shayna baszler in the segment! (also one of my faves and an incredible submission fighter. her muay thai is good too.) she appears briefly and so does tara larosa, unfortunately. (excellent fighter, one of the best in the world, but not a personal fave ). she talks about gina bringing sexuality into women's mma and that is something she hoped wouldn't happen. i don't see gina doing photoshoots or video games, and such to promote elitexc as any different than GSP, liddell, huerta, etc. doing esquire magazine or photoshoots to help promote ufc.
anyway, thanks again for the heads up releash.
in the end, whatever gets people to tune in on the 31st...they may come for the "hype", but i hope they'll stay with it after they see kaitlin and gina put on a show!
speaking of shayna baszler and tara larosa, here is their match from bodogfight : costa rica, the series, 2/18/2007. personally, i think the stand up while shayna was working rubber guard was kind of bull. otherwise, not a bad fight...
leafs, here is one of joachim hansen's matches. this one from K-1 Hero's in 2005 vs. caol uno. it is one of my favourite matches ever!
this is missing the second round for some reason, and the quality isn't the best, but i have some better quality hansen fights i'll upload and send to you later if you'd like. also, it is japanese commentary and the sound is off by about five seconds or so...
this one is a highlight video set to music of the fight and has parts of the second round as well as the entrances and exits. it always brings a tear to my eye when uno is asked to come back and bow at the end. :( maybe it's just the music!
Ortiz: 'I plan on fighting for three more years'by ARIEL HELWANI, MMARated.com
Ariel Helwani: Do you truly believe that your fight against Lyoto Machida on May 24 will be your last fight?
Tito Ortiz: I think that May 24 will be my last fight with the UFC. I plan on continuing my career though. I plan on fighting for three more years. That is what is in my mind and it is set in stone in my mind — still competing. I am just sick of being taken advantage of (and) I am sick of being treated the way I have been treated with the UFC.
Over the last two years, I have really been kind of forgotten about by UFC. (Fans) were saying, "Does Tito Ortiz still fight?" Well, it just shows how much the UFC used me. I am just sick of a lot of things that they do on the sides to try to keep me down, and if I will fight again with the UFC, it will be under my own terms.
Read more at...
For more exclusive MMA interviews, check out MMARated.com -- the new voice of mixed martial arts. AH: You just said "If I fight again for the UFC..." Are you still kind of holding out hope that something will be resolved and you will continue your career in the UFC?
TO: You know what it really comes down to is just (UFC president) Dana White. If he learns to shut his mouth and learns to respect me there is a possibility yet. (He needs to) give a public apology for the things that he has done. That is just what it really comes down to, but I want to go with a company that is going to respect me and see me as the champion I am and the ambassador that I am of the sport and not really downplay me or disrespect me on television or anything else.
AH: Do you expect the UFC to make a final effort to try and smooth things over with you leading up to the Machida bout or will everything be dealt with afterwards?
TO: With me, it is all dealt with afterwards. I respect (UFC co-owner) Lorenzo (Fertitta) a whole lot. He is a great person. He has helped me out a lot from the very beginning when he first bought the company and I think what they thought I was worth was not anything close to what I thought I was worth and, once again, it was just Dana trying to undercut me. They say that I am not better than what I used to be and I am worth less than I used to be. To me, it is like, "Alright, well, if you guys think that, I am going to see if any other company thinks that." I have to wait until my contract is over before I could negotiate with anybody else and when the negotiations come about we'll see how much Tito Ortiz is worth.
AH: What are your thoughts on Lyoto Machida? He is 12-0 and coming off an impressive victory over Sokoudjou. Do you feel he is a worthy enough opponent for you in what may be your final fight in the UFC?
TO: I was looking for a bigger fight and I thought that the rematch with Rashad Evans was supposed to happen, but Machida is undefeated. He is (ranked) fifth in the world and I guess that means he is one of the best fighters in the world. So when I beat him, then it will just show that I have not really gone anywhere. When I do beat Machida, it will just show that I am still at the top of the world. In the last ten years, I have only lost to two people: One of the greatest heavyweight champions in the world, Randy Couture, and one of the greatest knockout artists, light heavyweight Chuck Liddell.
AH: Why did the rematch against Rashad Evens never materialize?
TO: I don't know. I think that is a question that everyone has to ask Dana. I was wondering it myself. Is it a chance for them to build Machida? Do I give him some type of recognition if I fight him and he does well against me? Well, when I beat him, it will just show that I am still a force to be reckoned with no matter what.
AH: What are your thoughts on Elite XC? Do you consider them the UFC's strongest competitor?
TO: I see them as a strong company. Of course, Mark Cuban has another strong company (too). But it seems like all the other companies are starting to work together. They are starting to help each other. With me, I just want a company that is going to support me, that is going to be behind me and push me and see me as the ambassador that I am and the champion that I am. Whatever company that's going to sign me, they are going to take care of me; they are going to put me in front. They are going to let me use my mic skills and use my fighting skills. I have been a great promoter myself. Is there a chance for me start my own organization? Possibly. I just really think that I want to be in an organization that is going to care about the fighters and not really care about the brand itself and that's what it really comes down to.
I hope this gives Tito even more inspiration to kick ass, as if he needs it.

As stated yesterday, Tito Ortiz made comments stating he would give the UFC another chance should Dana White apologize for the things he has done to him. Well, Dana responded at the conference call and shockingly he’s not playing into Tito’s hand:
“Tito is a f—ing idiot,” White said. “He’s one of the dumbest human beings I’ve ever met. Everything that comes out of his mouth makes no sense.”
White added that he doesn’t think UFC needs Ortiz because he doesn’t think Ortiz can beat any of UFC’s top fighters.
“I put up with his s— when he was a good fighter,” White said. “He’s not anymore.”
“He’s not in anybody’s Top 10,” White said. “I have no interest whatsoever in being in the Tito Ortiz business. … I’ve never wanted to see anyone get their ass kicked worse than I want to see Tito get his kicked next Saturday night.”
I don't think Dana will ever stop letting his emotions have the final say.
man, what a huge turnaround for jason day to go from known a little in canada, to winning in impressive fashion vs/ belcher and getting a standing o from the bell centre, to now being one of the main bouts on a PPV from england! all in a matter of months! good for him.
not so good for chris leben, i guess...
i know, it's amazing for day what is happening for him right now. I don't think he'll beat Bisping, but then again i didn't think he had a chance against Belcher, so really anything can happen.
I'm disappointed in leban, I hope he learns his lesson and comes back to the ufc for some more amazing fights.

i just read a couple changes to UFC 85. It appears that Goulet will not be fighting Paul Kelly since he doesn't have enough time to prepare.

man those knees are scary... another good fight from fighters that i don't know at all lol. I think Kim was out after the right hammer fist right after the fitst knee, he kind of turtled from it. Then the knee to the back of the head was just scary and the like 3 or 4 more hammer fists. Well, atleast we can't say the refs make quick stoppages lol

yup another great fight, that's 3 in a row, this card has been really good so far. I could be wrong again, i haven't seen any of his other fights so i'm just going by what i saw on here.

another great fight, gotta give inoue alot of credit he's a freaking warrior.

FOTN!!! what a great fight, both of these guys are tough as nails. Hanson is incredible, he was rocked hard i don't even remember how many times and recovered everytime within a second. Eddie had some incredible sub defence and got out of some that he really shouldn't have. Absolutly great fight and good decision by the judges.
extremely respectful words after the fight by boths warriors... i'd like to see both of these guys fight again

another good fight, uno landed some great punches like you said and was very impressive in this win.
09/19/05, 05/09/06, 05/10/06
i think he did the ice cream in delerious! that's right! i forgot about that one. he did do the mc'donald's one in raw, though. so we can take our pick.
+1 on the thoughts from the fights. i think the last one was simply surprising in that it was a brawl from two of the last guys in the house they'd though they'd get one from. plus, it was "back and forth, back and forth", as rampage would say.
the DREAM show turned out to be better than expected, especially with the UNO win!!! i was very excited! eddie alvarez vs. joachim hansen is being mentioned now as a fight of the year candidate too.
still...UNO!!!
sorry about the spoilers, leafs...i was hoping someone like yourself might show up and end up watching as well.
i see below you've started watching the show...enjoy!
thanks releash. i'm hoping she's been training hard for the 31st. should be the fight of the night!
changes made to rumours.
man, what a huge turnaround for jason day to go from known a little in canada, to winning in impressive fashion vs/ belcher and getting a standing o from the bell centre, to now being one of the main bouts on a PPV from england! all in a matter of months! good for him.
not so good for chris leben, i guess...
he usually comes out with a mask of come sort, whether it be tribal, or scary or a wrestling mask...or some kind of outfit on. sometimes he throws money around to the fans too. i thought he'd make the most of the opportunity to entertain in japan because the fans love that. if he does well in the MW tournament i could see him becoming a star over there. still, the breakdancing and the post fight interview with a lot of japaenese probably won some fans over.
have to agree about the elbows. if they added elbows it would be the perfect rule set for me. i remember you said you like the stomps and soccer kicks from pride, but that was one of the rules i didn't like there. it's all a matter of preference i guess. so personally, i like the new rules, i just wish they would allow elbows. i just think it keeps an more active game on the ground, like the knees they are allowed to use...have to disagree with bas on the elbows.
oh, and if you can find GSP vs. Mayhem from UFC 52? i think...it's a really fun match to watch. i'll try to find it for you if you can't get it on youtube or something like that. i had it on the computer, but deleted it after montreal. haha it's mayhem's only UFC fight, it's just too bad he was facing GSP and at WW.
yeah, two guys i don't know well either. i just know manhoef from fighting in K-1...but i don't follow that unless it's a big event usually.
apparently, manhoef said in an interview that he had tubes in his lungs for this fight?!?! i don't know how true that is, but apparently he suffered some chest and breathing problems after fighting a K-1 match vs. remy bojansky a couple of weeks ago.
after watching it again, i'd say you're right about the finish.
yeah, he definitiely has some refining to do. from what i remember from new year's eve, he had sinya aoki in a couple of really bad spots and probably would have submitted him if he weren't so flexible. then jung had a couple of escapes too. his second match with ishda was not as good, but still fun to watch. ishda was all over him with position but jung was still able to put him in some precarious positions. both of these fights were mostly grappling, sub attempts and takedowns.
true about the chin...this was the first time it was really tested. it sucks that he's 0-3, but two of the fights were aginst top five LW's in the world, so he can only get better from here. i'm sure the nakamura fight will be another learning experience and he can improve on the mistakes you mentioned.
they put on a great fight, as you said.
thanks for the clarification. i only watch that one once so far and didn't get the second stoppage. now it makes sense.
+1 on your and bas' thoughts! no cuts for nick this time, luckily!
i had to watch this one again! i really thought joachim was going to overwhelm him, but after the two met with blows to start the match, that set the tone for the rest. eddie has come a long way in a short period of time and hansen is one of the toughest LW's out there.
definitely check out more of jachim's matches. he's rarely in a boring one, and his knees are famous. his match with caol uno from K-1 HERO's is one of my favourites. i wasn't a fan of eddie's before as he seemed a bit one dimensional, but he showed a multi dimensionsal game that night! few would have predicted he'd be in the final four.
definitely great sportsmanship. i'd like to see more of that, as well as more alvarez and hansen!
i guess they have decided kawajiri will face alvarez in the semi's...with the performance he put in against joachim, i'd almost have to go with eddie on this one.
UNO!
i'm still very happy uno won. i like ishida, even though most don't like his style, but he's got tenacity. a well deserved win. good way to put it.
i hope you didn't read anything before you watched, but thanks for the comments, leafs. it's good to get your perspective on this one. we are among the few, i think, when it comes to the ring vs. cage thing...haha...most people who like the japanese MMA only like the ring. i find it only creates more problems. again, a matter of preference i guess.
i'm really looking forward to the next shows! maybe we'll catch it at the same time next one, eh?
hadn't noticed the first time what an arsehole kawajiri was being after the match. first, he stared uno down, then when uno went to shake hands with ishida and his corner, kawajiri grabbed him by the hand and pulled him in to say something in his ear, then pushed his hand away.
during the post fight show, when you're supposed to thank the fans, kawajiri turned his back to the other competitors and made some kind of speech about K-1 and Pride, then stared uno down again as he gave up the microphone to uno. uno seemed cool as always...:)
i know they had a controversial draw in shooto that most thought kawajiri won, but uno is a pretty well respected guy. i'm hoping kawajiri will "get his" from either alvarez, if that's his next opponent or better yet, from uno himself!
thanks again, releash!
there was a ten minute segment at the beginning, a round table discussion about the segment they are going to do. i guess this is the format for the show. it was interesting to hear the thoughts of the reporters at espn, as none of them really knew too much about the sport. someday they will as more of these segments get done and more shows get on the air, perhaps.
anyway, there were a couple of inaccuracies in the first part...
her father's name is glen carano, she was a muay thai fighter with a 12-1-1 record in muay thai and a championship in thailand, so she doesn't come from a kickboxing background. she began training at extreme couture to improve her ground game, not because she needed a big name to train her because she can't fight. they focus a lot on the role of her looks in her "celebrity" and selling tickets, as most people do, unfortunately. as many people think, they talk about her only being in the sport because of her looks, not realizing that she is already one of the best, if not THE best striker in women's mma.
also, the line "is she fighting a guy or a girl?" was pretty funny. anyway, goes to show there's a long way to go in terms of education for people about not only women's mma, but mma in general...
1st segment:
http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3394607&categoryId=3060647&n8pe6c=3
the second segment is called "serious crush" ...so yes releash, they did talk about gladiators. again, in this segment she was a muay thai fighter, not a kickboxer.
it was awesome to see shayna baszler in the segment! (also one of my faves and an incredible submission fighter. her muay thai is good too.) she appears briefly and so does tara larosa, unfortunately. (excellent fighter, one of the best in the world, but not a personal fave ). she talks about gina bringing sexuality into women's mma and that is something she hoped wouldn't happen. i don't see gina doing photoshoots or video games, and such to promote elitexc as any different than GSP, liddell, huerta, etc. doing esquire magazine or photoshoots to help promote ufc.
anyway, thanks again for the heads up releash.
in the end, whatever gets people to tune in on the 31st...they may come for the "hype", but i hope they'll stay with it after they see kaitlin and gina put on a show!

this is missing the second round for some reason, and the quality isn't the best, but i have some better quality hansen fights i'll upload and send to you later if you'd like. also, it is japanese commentary and the sound is off by about five seconds or so...

this one is a highlight video set to music of the fight and has parts of the second round as well as the entrances and exits. it always brings a tear to my eye when uno is asked to come back and bow at the end. :( maybe it's just the music!

I don't think Dana will ever stop letting his emotions have the final say.
i know, it's amazing for day what is happening for him right now. I don't think he'll beat Bisping, but then again i didn't think he had a chance against Belcher, so really anything can happen.
I'm disappointed in leban, I hope he learns his lesson and comes back to the ufc for some more amazing fights.
