  • cool! thanks for posting that, lbc. :)

yeah, it's unfortunate that there is so much politics and $ and what not that gets in the way of the sport. the ufc is making a mistake with some of their fighters right now, i think. tito and andrei being the first two that come to mind. both guys are still huge draws and not even close to being done with their careers. andrei still might get worked out, but it looks like the damage is done with tito and dana and all that junk.

at least tito will be going out on a win. this is a perfect matchup for him, in my opinion.

we used to be at odds about tito, lbc...can you believe you've converted me!?! :D

Hey Mook. If you can change and I can change, We can all change. LOL

Seriously though, I really do hope that they work the Andrei thing out, cause that is gonna be a big loss.

The Heaveyweight division is gonna suffer, no Coture,Sylvia,AA.
I was really hoping to see AA vs Nog.

    well done, lbc!

yeah, me too, or randy ("h"andy :D) vs. nog. it finally looked competitive last year, and now there's only a few good HW's left.
  • it will be beautiful to have hughes fade away after a humiliating loss to st-pierre, a boring decision over lytle, another humiliating loss to st-pierre, a knockout courtesy of alves and a submission loss to serra. i couldn't be happier! go thiago! :) good bye hughes! :D

Hughes vs. Alves tapped for UFC 85 main event
    by Dann Stupp - MMAJunkie.com
    Apr 25, 2008

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (42-6 MMA, 15-3 UFC) and highly ranked 170-pounder contender Thiago Alves (14-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) have stepped up to fill the UFC 85 main-event slot vacated by an injured Chuck Liddell.

Hughes made the announcement on his official website. However, the UFC hadn't announced the bout as of Friday afternoon.

UFC 85 takes place June 7 at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Hughes, who said he wants to fight rival Matt Serra after the fight with Alves, is coming off a UFC 79 loss to Georges St. Pierre for the UFC's interim welterweight title. Prior to that, he had defeated Chris Lytle via unanimous decision at UFC 68.

"June 7, in England, I fight Thiago Alves," Hughes wrote. "The fight is confirmed, (and) it will be the main event for the card. Dana (White) just called me with the news.

"No matter what happens in this fight, I've got Serra next."

Hughes will now take on Alves, one of the UFC's top fighters who's somehow managed to fly under the radar. He's currently riding a five-fight win streak with his only losses in the UFC coming to Jon Fitch and Spencer Fisher. He most recently defeated Karo Parisyan with a second-round TKO at UFC Fight Night 13 earlier this month, which moved him up the world 170-pound rankings.

Liddell, who tore a hamstring during a recent training session, was slated to headline the event with Rashad Evans. Evans now faces James Irvin instead.

hey guys, sorry i haven't been around much this week, works been stupid.

First off, thanks mookie for the prelims, i haven't watched them yet, but am going to sunday when i finally have time.

Next, i'm sorry, but i have to disagree with you on the Tito thing. I'm very sad to see him go because he was one of the fighters that initially brought me into the sport (after the dealy from the first couple ufc's), but imo, he's going to get schooled by Michida. Michida is up and coming and i don't see Tito taking this fight to be honest.

Chipper is awsome and just seems to love to fight, he was stupid to not stand up when Rampage was yelling at him (he had that freaking round) but he's young and will learn alot by being here.

I really can't believe that Matt Hughes took this fight with Alves (i got a little more respect for him). I mean, Alves is probably top 4 or 5 WW (depends where you put Serra) and I really have to respect that matt would take this fight with the chance to really advance Alves to top 3 WW (with Fitch and GSP). I think Alves will take this fight, but it's going to be damn good.

Finally, now that 83 is over, i'm kind of depressed. Going to be way to long till we all get to experience that again. I want to come to roo with you releash, but the line-up (and the fact that it falls on my holidays) for lolla looks way too damn good to pass up.

thanks again to mookie for the upload, you are awsome man!!!

crap, i didn't even mention anything about 84 in my previous thread lol.

this card will own, and i've only really looked at 3 fights lol.

ok 1st off, who is the DKM that you speak of mookie... don't know anything about him and i'd kind of like to know.
Love that Clementi is stepping up and coming in on short notice (and after a good fight against a strong competitor in Stout) and that we will get to see "war machine" again.
Like i said, i'm taking machida to school tito and probably stop him in the 2nd.
I'm going to take Wandy in the 1st by soccer kicks to head of jardine lol (i wish we still had pride rules lol). But really, i'll take wandy to stop jardine in the 2nd or possibly go to decision and wandy still come up with the victory (i'm freaking praying for this).
And well i can't really go against bj at 155. The guy is a possible p4p best fighter, how can you not take him at 155 against anybody in the world.

sorry guys, just read this over at sherdog

it seems bisping/Leben will now be added to the ufc 85 card aswell as the hughes/alves fight that mookie told us about. Guys are really stepping up for this ppv now that chuck and shogun both went down and i love it. Not to mention that this is resulting in some amazing fights, a ppv that went to garbage is now looking amazing.

  • sorry leafs, my disdain for matt hughes gets the better of me at times. well, i guess...every time...:D i really can't wait to see thiago take him on. he has excellent takedown defense and great striking that's going to be difficult to deal with. we'll see if matt's wrestling is good enough to get him a decision. thiago should be fired up for this one. you're right, that card is looking fantastic again.

...and 84 is going to be exciting too. DHK (or KDH in korea ;)) has been described as the korean georges st-pierre. he's tall, athletic and has an all around solid game. i've seen all his matches from korea, but the videos left a bit to be desired, so i'm hoping he gets on the PPV so i can get a better look. he's considered by most to be the best WW in korea so i'm anxious to see how he performs in the UFC. he's used to competing in a ring, so there will be a lot of differences for him to deal with. they made the signing some time ago and the initial rumour was a match in montreal! maybe when they come back. :)

lbc's going to get mad at you for picking lyoto! haha my gut's telling me it's a good style match for tito, so that's what i'm going with. machida has some skills, though! it could be a difference maker in the fantasy league! :D

no worries on the pre-lims. i hope they worked for everyone. sorry for the delay. i think i mentioned it took longer than i thought...a couple of "re-takes" and what not, so that's why i was hoping they'd work.

    he makes a good point.

it's starting to feel as though the whole situation got a little blown out of proportion.... :(

i'm sorry civ but i have to disagree... He is pretty much admitting that he gave up because he was facing a better fighter. If he was just going to run for 2 more rounds, I say throw in the towel after the 1st. Don't go out there and disrespect the fans by wasting their time if you aren't going to try and earn your money. I lost a great deal of respect for kalib from this fight, and i just love how he writes "no excusses" when it seems that is all he is doing.

  • i enjoyed reading this blog from jason macdonald about his match and experience at UFC 83 in montreal. thought i would pass it along...(not just because he mentions nova scotia! haha). the parts about what was going through his mind during joe's submission attempts are particularly interesting.

    Experience paid off

It was chaotic for me in Montreal. There were so many things to do; it was busy with all the activities and the media. I had friends who drove up from Nova Scotia, where I was born and raised, to see me and I didn't have a chance to talk to them.

It was busy afterward of course. You know it's funny, when you lose, your phone never rings. You go home and it's silent for days. When you win, though, your phone rings and everyone's calling your room and they want to do interviews. It's the nature of the business. My cell phone hasn't stopped ringing.

Joe Doerksen came over to our locker room after the fight and he apologized. He said I beat him the first time and I didn't need to give him a rematch and I did and he was grateful for that. And he said I beat him fair and square again, so we kind of buried the hatchet.

That's the good thing about mixed martial arts. You can have these heated rivalries but at the end of the training camp you get to fight each other and that puts an end to those rivalries. People often turn to fighting as the end of a conflict. In hockey, if people don't like each other they fight. They don't just walk around and stick each other. Fortunately, we're in the sport where we get to fight!

It ended there for us and I don't want anything more to do with that soap opera. Will Joe and I ever be buddies and go out for beer or be training partners? Probably not. But there's absolutely no bad blood between him and I anymore.

I said I wanted to go out there and dominate and I felt I did that for the most part. I had him in a submission early on where I thought I was going to finish him, but Doerksen's tough. He was able to hang in there and get out of that. And then he put me in a lot of trouble. Likewise, I called on my experience and was able to hang in there and then turn it around in the second round.

There was a point where I thought I was going to have to tap. My arm was about to either pop or my arm was going to either tear or break. I actually lifted my hand up and was going to tap. This happened very fast and your first instinct is just to tap because it feels like your arm is going to be ripped off. But I quickly told myself, "Just calm down and try to work yourself out of it." So I started to think my way out of it and was able to recover and get up and actually end the round on top throwing some punches. Had it maybe been two years ago and I wasn't as seasoned as I am, I probably would have tapped right away.

I felt good going into the second round and I wasn't at all tired and my cornermen Mark and Josh pointed out that Joe looked like he had spent a tremendous amount of energy trying to finish me off. I still felt really fresh so I was going to go out there and try to jump on him right away and finish him off fast.

It was crazy all the support I got from fans right from the weigh-ins, the walk out to the cage and then of course after the fight when I jumped on the fence and the crowd just went wild. And just all the attention from the fans on the street and at the stadium, it was really just spectacular. I couldn't imagine at this point in my life doing anything else. It's a dream come true.

I hope to carry some of this momentum into my next fight. Hopefully I'll get the opportunity to get right back in there maybe on the July card. I'd love to get a high-level fight to get myself toward that No. 1 contender spot. There are a ton of middleweights, and I'd love to fight any of those guys who are in the mix. Nate Quarry got a big win, Michael Bisping too.

I'll be spending the next few weeks helping Ryan Ford and one of my fighters, Evan Sanguin, prepare for their fights on the upcoming MFC card on May 9.

One more comment: I read the article in the Montreal Gazette the day after the event and it was horrible. I read a couple of things in the Montreal papers and it was some of the most horrible journalism I've ever read in my life. A one-sided opinion of a sport they have no knowledge of. It was appalling in my opinion, especially when Georges St-Pierre is supposed to be the pride and joy of Montreal, and Canada. That was the only disappointing thing.

HUERTA TO FIGHT FLORIAN AT UFC 87
    Monday, April 28, 2008
    by Tom Hamlin - MMAWeekly.com

Sources from both fighters’ camps have confirmed that Kenny Florian will face Roger Huerta at UFC 87 on Aug. 9 in Minneapolis, Minn. Both fighters have received and are expected to sign their bout agreements.

Florian is just weeks removed from an impressive win against Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 13 in Broomfield, Colo. The Boston lightweight has been rapidly climbing back to contender status since his loss to Sean Sherk for the lightweight title at UFC 64.

Florian knows his next shot at the lightweight belt is on the line.

"It's kind of rare when you get two guys who are positively number one and number two in the division that are actually going to fight to be the number one contender to fight for that belt later on," Florian told MMAWeekly.com. "I think it will be great for both of our careers, and it's the biggest fight you can put together in our division."

Huerta, who currently resides in Minnesota, exploded onto the scene in 2007 with five straight victories, most recently a come-from-behind win against Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 6 finale that was widely considered to be one of the best fights of 2007. The fight with Florian will be his first in nine months, part of a self-expressed desire to take time off following one of the busiest stretches in his career.

"He's a game opponent, and he's never going to quit," Florian said of Huerta's reputation. "It doesn't matter how tired he gets, he's gonna keep going, and those are the kind of guys that I want to fight. He's on a roll, he's very confident right now. And I like the kid. I know him personally. He's a good kid, and we get along great. He has a bright future, regardless of what happens in the fight with me."

The showdown will bolster a fight card that also touts another match-up with strong local interest between Minnesota native Brock Lesnar and former UFC heavyweight champion and Ohio State wrestler Mark Coleman.

Huerta was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
