assuming glavine picks up win number 299 at Los Angeles, his first shot at 300 would be July 25 vs. Pittsburgh.
yeah i hope that happens to, id hate to be on my cruise and miss what possibly could be the last 300th winner

my intial reaction was hmm last 300 game winner, but after looking it up, that's a possibilty at least for a while. the next active pitcher that has more than 250 wins is Randy johnson, who is at 284 but is currently injured.

it's tough considering he has a herinated disk in his back again. what hurt him was he didn't really get good until 1993 when he was 29. he only had 56 wins from 1988-1992, which seems like a lot but he really didn't start being dominant until that 1993 season.

He pitched for some really sorry Mariners teams those years. Their average finish was 6th place for '89-92. Johnson began to have consistant play behind him once Junior and A-Rod came into their own. He, they, and Lou Piniella helped that Seattle team improve dramatically.

I don't quite know if he'll make 300 wins, but it sure looks like Tom Glavine is going to get it this season. Might be the last guy for a very long time if/when he does.

How about those Mets taking three of four from the Reds to open the second half of the season? That makes me feel much better about the team, considering what the month of June/pre-All Star Break was like for them. Now for a six-game West Coast swing against some good teams.

    Let's Go Mets!

i was at the game yesterday...first game in like 5-6 yrs (basically b/c of college and them getting so good that ticket prices sky rocketed and corporations took most of the field/loge seats)
but anyways...great game. Was pissed that fans didn't get their money's worth for a "gold game" since Griffey didn't play. And altho DeLuca didn't play, Castro had a hell of a game.
Good weather, Perez was sick, bullpen pitched shutout innings in relief, and Wagner was excellent. Good 5-2 win

Tough night for the Amazins in San Diego. I really thought they could've jumped on Boomer for some runs tonight, given that he has been pretty bad this season.

On another note, has anyone watched the Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush movie on HBO? I've read a detailed history of the Mets, which included much about the beginnings of National League baseball in New York (Giants and Dodgers). It really explains a lot about New Yorkers' obsession with NL baseball, and perhaps explains how we have inherited this passion in following those Amazin' Mets.

Watch it, if you get a chance.

Get back on track, Mets! We will not wait 'til next year.

I caught it last week. It was really good and offered a lot of revealing insights into Robert Moses. By the way, a lot of that information is also in a book called "The Last Good Season", which came out in 2003.

Last nights game was awesome. Really a terrific effort from everyone. Especially El Duque.

Hopefully tonight Maine will do his thing and the rest of the Mets will follow. Winning this series is crucial.

Some good news in the afternoon. Atlanta is down 3-2 going into the bottom of the 10th. Good vibes going out to the Mets.

Edit: Damn that Chipper Jones. The game is now tied, and I will now refrain from posting about Atlanta until the game is over...

Mets won a wild one in LA last night. Glavine couldn't make it out of the third inning, so he wasn't able to rack the win. Marlon Anderson contributed in LF (what's Alou's status, anyway?) and the bullpen held on long enough to preserve the win.

Ollie goes tonight. It's good to see some of the injured players/pitchers returning to action as July winds down. Hopefully Pedro, Endy, and Gomez aren't too far behind them. I have to wonder whether Omar is going to try to make a trade before the deadline. I know there's not many stars or impact players available, but couldn't this team use a real solid bullpen arm or a decent bat to come off the bench for the stretch run? Some will say the Castro/third catcher deal helps them with the extra bat, but I'm not fond of that strategy.

Yea it was weird and unsatisfying. I was watching and was pretty happy to see us leading when I turned it on in the top of the fourth, and I want to see Tommy get 300 more than anybody, but when he loaded the bases with no outs, I just wanted him out.

I do not see Omar making any major moves ... maybe an extra arm for the pen. However, he will treat the guys coming off of IR (including Pedro) as late season pick-ups, with the return of both Alou and Endy strengthening the bench. i also like the readdition of marlon anderson and the 3 catcher set up because it also helps utilize castro a little more. however, when the bodies return, look for alomar to be sent back down.

I heard we may be going after Jermaine Dye...but now he's on fire...so i doubt that will go through.

Castro has been a stud lately.....he can swing the bat pretty well...esp. considering he doesn't play everyday. not easy to hit when you play sparingly.

Also, Alou...i checked on him the other day...and he's been on the 15 day DL since two months ago? So, your guess is as good as mine....

    a win's a win though..and i'll take it!

What would the Mets give for Dye? Heilman? Pelfrey?

We'd probably be glad to be rid of either, but who would honestly take them with the way they've performed this year?

I'm not sold on (yet) another aging corner OF being the solution to the Mets problem. A decent middle reliever is about the only move I can see Omar trying to make.

Yup, that's what we need most I think right now. The Mets have the bats, they just need to be consistent and do their jobs. A good (young) starter actually, would also be good, but I don't think we can pick one up now, that'll have to wait till the off-season.

Hope he contributes in the second half of this season like he did for the Giants the past two years. Those were some pretty decent numbers for a player his age.

Who are going to be the odd-men-out when Alou, Chavez, and Gomez return to the OF?

The Mets surely won't carry more than five OFs, will they? Milledge seems like an easy choice to move back to AAA, but do you give Gomez a look with the club or just immediately option him back to the minors (given a healthy Alou and Green)?

Team showed some guts today in coming from behind twice to take the game in extra innings. Winning three of four @ Chavez Ravine was a nice way to wrap the West Coast roadie. Now it's back to Shea for seven games against the Pirates and Nationals. Good times!

Milledge hit in the #2 spot today. Amazing what a difference it makes hitting between Reyes and Beltran. He went 2-5, with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Hope he soon develops the discipline at the plate to perform like that no matter where he hits in the lineup.

Even though the 2B situation helped cost them the game on Saturday, I still don't see the Mets making a move to bring in another fielder. If any trade happens over the next week, it's got to be for a reliever. I was yelling at Willie yesterday to take Sosa out when he blew up in the 4th, but I came to wonder if Skip was trying to save the bullpen arms (because they had to go to the relievers early with Glavine in LA). It seems more likely to me that there is little confidence in the bullpen and Omar is going to try to bring a more reliable left arm into the mix. Schoeneweis and Feliciano just don't show signs of getting it done in September and October.

Totally agree. Taking 3 out of 4 from the Dodgers was really key. I was hoping they'd take 2-3 from San Diego and split with Dodgers and I would have been happy, but this is almost better. We needed to go back to LA and show that we could get them back for the sweep earlier this year.

And yea, we do need another arm in the bullpen. With our starting rotation so inconsistent (some days amazing, some days awful), we need more consistency and arms in the bullpen in case our starters need to be rescued.

What we really need is a few younger and consistent arms in the rotation, but I believe we're gonna need to wait till next season for that.

nice road trip, i loved yesterdays game.id really like to see the mets get dotel and wigginton and put him at 2nd base.i think if hard pressed omar would give up lastings for a bullpen pitcher.id like to see us sweep the bucks and the nationals, that really put us ahead of the braves.
