Yeah, Stevens needs to be fired like 2 years ago. If it were up to me, I'd bring back Barber. :)

    So...Laviolette. Thoughts?

I'm unsure he was the right choice. More than anything we need a guy who can kick the young players in the ass, and Laviolette doesn't strike me as much of an ass-kicker. Can't get any worse though!

interesting news. they've been playing like shit for the past month, even when they won. hopefully, this will give them a little fire in the belly and get them flying around the ice vs. what they have been doing which seemed to be skating in slow motion.

I think FUGLY was the word you are looking for  . Yeah never heard of a 9 min. Power play either. Guess the coaching change didn't have too much to do with the way we played.

I can remember a Capitals game I attended back in the 90's where there was a 10+ minute uninterrupted 2nd period. I was like when will there be an icing, any stoppage in play so I can go to the can.

Yeah, and the call was total bullshit. If you want to give Carcillo a major for fighting and a misconduct for being an asshole, fine. But the weak crosschecking call AND the instigator on top of it? Ridiculous. Both players dropped the gloves. If Carcillo doesn't one-punch the guy to the ice we're likely looking at 5 minute fighting majors for both players and nothing else.

Another example of the NHL punishing based on outcome rather than the actual act itself.

Carcillo has been on his best behavior this season, and has been more effective because of it. I don't know if he was trying to impress a new coach, but last night was a return to bonehead.

There was so much wrong last night that I don't even know where to begin. I think Laviolette is an impressive coach who got canned for no reason by the Isles (how'd that Steve Stirling era go?) and won a Cup in Carolina. Let's hope the guys were just drained from switching coaches, and can move on Monday. And hope that Ray Emery gets his mojo back.

    UGH.

A truly great game to watch, there is nothing I love more than watching the Caps take the Flyers out behind the woodshed. I think the Flyers need to sign some more slow, old defensemen, perhaps another goon or two who bring nothing to the game, and maybe another shitty goalie. That should help them turn it around, wait, that's what they've been doing for the last few years. Flyers suck balls!!!

Carcillo sucks - will the Flyers ever realize it's not 1974 anymore? enough with the goons who can't freakin play. You can be tough and still be a good player, a la Pronger, Rick Tocchet of old, etc. Putting Carcillo on the ice is a freakin waste - enough of it already.

I still think this team is going to be fine. still lots of talent on this team but they just need a kick in the ass. Laviolette is the man for that.

ol Danny boy gets a 4 game suspension.

does it really matter? unless they decide they want to play at 100% effort 100% of the time, it's all a big mute point.

This funk better end especially now with a new coach

not a lot of shots. they said it was a low mark for Montreal for total combined shots in the 1s1 period.

even tho the Flyers lost, they seemed to have more jump last night then they have in the last 3 weeks. they still look lost out there at times.

are they ever going to score on teh power play again? 17 straight i belive.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Flyers goalie Ray Emery(notes) will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn muscle in his lower abdomen, and is expected to miss about six weeks.

Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren made the announcement Tuesday night before the Flyers played the New York Islanders.

The Flyers, who lost five straight and eight of nine, recalled goalie Johan Backlund(notes) from the Adirondack Phantoms, but will rely heavily on Brian Boucher(notes).

Emery hadn’t been playing well, and was pulled from Saturday’s game against the Washington Capitals after allowing five goals.

Holmgren said the injury played a part in Emery’s slump.

“You know how hard he practices,” Holmgren said. “He’s been trying to fight through this, but couldn’t practice the way he normally does, and his game suffered. He’s a down young man, and feels he let his team down.”

The Flyers were aware of the injury since November, Holmgren said, and tried rehabilitation and cortisone injections. However, Emery’s condition deteriorated to the point where surgery became the only option.

“It has gotten progressively worse,” Holmgren said. “The tests and the MRI we’ve done showed a tear in his abdominal wall.”

Emery, 27, is 11-8-1 with a 2.83 goals-against average and .901 save percentage, including one shutout, in 21 appearances this season—his first with Philadelphia. Flyers forward Simon Gagne(notes) underwent a similar procedure last month.

The slumping Flyers have fallen into last place in the Atlantic Division, which led to the firing of coach John Stevens last week and the hiring of Peter Laviolette.

“It’s no fun being around here right now, for any of us,” Holmgren said. “The players certainly want to get out of this sooner rather than later. The one good thing about our sport, especially now, is that we have games every other day, so there’s always something (to work through).”

Kicking some Islander butt tonight. Get out of the basement Flyers!

that sucks about Emery. at least we have something to blame for his bad goaltending as of late.

Bobby has looked good when given the chance. hopefully, he will continue to excel.

    tonight was sorely needed.

They actually looked like a team last night. Now if we can get the whole play for 60 minutes thing down, we might have something. The next stretch of games will be a big test with 12 in 21 days and your backup goalie leading the way.
