Man Jailed for Mugging West Ham Star

    Friday, 13th January 2006, 12:50
    Category: Crime and Punishment
LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - A 23-year-old man who mugged Premiership star Anton Ferdinand in a jealous rage after the player chatted up his fiancee in a night club was today jailed for two years.

Leon McDowall attacked the West Ham star outside a kebab house in Croydon, frogmarched him to his car and forced him to hand over two Nokia phones, one worth £600, after seeing Ferdinand taking down his pretty brunette fiancee's phone number in the Escapades nightclub on September 9 last year.

Ferdinand, the brother of England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, handed over the phones believing McDowall had a gun.

At the same time McDowall's two accomplices robbed fellow Hammers and England under-21 captain Nigel Reo-Coker of a £32,000 diamond-encrusted gold necklace and a £5,000 Cartier watch at knifepoint.

But Mr Reo-Coker recognised McDowall, a semi-professional footballer, and later that he, Ferdinand and their friend non-league footballer Christopher Nurse went found McDowall's player profile on the AFC Wimbledon club website.

Police swooped on McDowall the following day in the dressing room of non-league Croydon Athletic, where he was in his second lone spell, just 20 minutes before their FA Cup tie against Ramsgate.

McDowall was described by his lawyer Roderick Jones, as a "pivotal player" for AFC Wimbledon. But Judge Cedric Joseph, sitting at Croydon Crown Court, said: "The fact that he's a good footballer doesn't mean he is entitled to a lower sentence than anyone else."

Sentencing McDowall, the judge said: "Robbery is always a serious offence. What may or may not have happened between your girlfriend and the victim in the club is neither here nor there and doesn't begin to justify what you did."

Prosecuting, Matheos Lefteris said Mr Ferdinand and his friends arrived at Escapades at about 10pm.

He continued: "Mr Ferdinand, meeting a young lady, exchanges conversation with her and during the course of that he saw the defendant walk past him.

"He and the girl exchanged phone numbers and shortly after he was approached by the defendant who asked him if he had got the female's number. He believed the defendant was an acquaintance of Mr Reo-Coker so he said yes. He was then asked not to use it as the girl was the defendant's girlfriend. He agreed."

Later McDowall, who had been kicked out of the club by security, saw Ferdinand, Reo-Coker and Nurse leave the club and go to their cars. He and two accomplices followed them to a kebab shop in Croydon High Street and attacked them.

Mr Lesteris said: "The defendant and two other males approached the shop. The defendant asked to see Mr Ferdinand's phone. He said he didn't have it with him. He was asked to go outside. At this point Mr Reo-Coker and Mr Nurse were being robbed and jewellery of high value was taken.

"During the course of this Mr Ferdinand heard one of the men say 'Don't make me get my piece out.' By this he believed the piece referred to a gun, although it is not suggested one was brandished.

"The defendant had hold of Mr Ferdinand and had his arm around him keeping him where he was. Mr Ferdinand was escorted by the defendant to his own car and he handed over his £600 Nokia. He was then asked for the other Nokia and both of these were handed to the defendant.

"Mr Reo-Coker came over and asked the defendant to stop. They knew each other. The other two males had left and police attended."

Upon his arrest the following day McDowall, of Northwood Road, Thornton Heath, denied robbery and accused Mr Ferdinand of lying. He changed his plea to guilty on December 5 shortly before his trial was due to take place.

A charge of robbery on Mr Reo-Coker and the attempted robbery of Mr Nurse were left to lie on the file.

He also refused to tell police who his two accomplices were.

Speaking after the sentencing Detective Inspector Alex Starr, of the South Norwood Robbery Squad, said: "He has borne the brunt of the deeds of the others - he obviously knew who they were and wasn't prepared to tell us.

"We are very pleased with result - how stupid to rob someone you know."

One of Mr Ferdinand's phones was returned the day after the robbery through a third party. Mr Ferdinand's friend Mr Nurse received a knife wound to his arm during the attack.

McDowall's fiancee was in court to see him sentenced and refused to give her name or comment after her boyfriend was sent down.

McDowall has previous convictions for possessing cannabis and carrying a bladed article.

Manure always spring a surprise so thats why im not overly confident..they step up their game an extra level whenever they play Liverpool..so..its gonna be a good game if both teams attack instead of defending.

    ergie Urges Red Card U-Turn

Sir Alex Ferguson wants referee Steve Bennett to reconsider the red card he showed Cristiano Ronaldo during Saturday's Manchester derby.

The official sent off the Portuguese winger after 66 minutes at Eastlands for a high lunge on Andy Cole, despite no contact taking place between the two players.

"The referee's decided it's a red card and I think he should look at it again really," Sir Alex told MUTV. "He's not touched the player, he's not got near him."

Ferguson felt Ronaldo's challenge was borne of frustration, having been clattered seconds earlier by Stephen Jordan without the award of a free-kick.

"I think he's really disappointed he never got a foul for the tackle on him, and it was a really bad tackle on him on the touchline. But no foul came from the referee and that's frustrated him," he said.

Debutant Patrice Evra was substituted at half-time for Alan Smith in a defensive reshuffle and Ferguson was quick to defend the new signing's contribution - insisting that the change was enforced simply by the need for more derby experience.

"At 2-0 down we wanted to make sure we didn't lose another goal," he said. "I think John O'Shea has more knowledge of derby games than Patrice, so that was maybe a bit of a gamble.

"That's why I played Mikael Silvestre, being a French player, trying to help Patrice. He did his job ok, I've no complaints. I don't think he was responsible for anything. But basically the defending out there was poor."

Ferguson conceded that City deserved their victory after a distinctly average United performance saw an end to an 11-game unbeaten league run.

He said: "We've been in very good form but in fairness we didn't play well enough in the first half. We gave the ball away too much and our last-third play wasn't good enough. The crosses into the box were easy to deal with and we should be doing better than that."

    Report by Steve Bartram.
