what do you think about posada telling pudge he has to pack his bags at the end of this season?
is it me, or is this posada's most outspoken years? he's had alot to say throughout the season (rightfully so).

i saw an article about it online today. he is going to be on a new episode of center stage soon, and there he said joba doesn't belong in the starting rotation, and pudge has to hit the road when this season is over.
the new episode should be airing soon, curious to see what else he says about this disappointing season.

I'm sure Brian Cashman will politely do so when they decline the option. The only reason they made the move was because of the Posada injury. They made it with the full knowledge it was a rental and that Posada would be back by spring training.

A day late but. Congrats Jeter for being the all-time Yankee Stadium hits leader.
And now congrats to A-Rod for hitting 35 hr 100rbi and 100 runs for 11 straight seasons. 12 altogether tied with the Babe.
That's what I love about Posada. He's fiery and will get in your face.
Pretty much exactly what the Yanks have been missing all year
Exactly! While Jeter is the captain and may lead by example, Posada is the vocal guy in that clubhouse. He will speak up to anyone. Agreed that the Yanks missed that this year. They also missed his clutch hitting.

I was one of the last to concede they would not make the playoffs this year. But now that it is an all but certainty, I have come to accept it. It sucks that the last game ever played at Yankee Stadium will take place in September. (And don't even get me started on the fact that the game will be a night game, and on ESPN and not the Yankees own network....)
But as the long awaited, fateful day draws nigh, I have come to grips with it. Think about this. In 2007 Playoff Baseball, the only team playing who had also played in the previous October was the Yankees. No other team in the league had a 2 year playoff streak as of last year. The Yankees had a 13 year streak. Had. It ends now.
And don't give me that payroll shit....As the payroll got higher, their stint in the playoffs got shorter. The Yankee teams that built the most recent dynasty were not the highest paid teams in the league. They were built from within, and thru brilliant trades. Not by signing the greatest player who ever lived every winter. They were built around Scott Brosius, ( and Wade Boggs/Charlie Hayes before him) and not Alex Rodriguez. Built around Paul O'Neill, not Bobby Abreu. Bernie Williams, not Johnny Damon. Tino Martinez (brought in for Russ Davis and Sterling Hitchcock) and not Jason Giambi (brought in for $130 million)
And don't give me any Joe Torre/Dodgers/Playoffs shit either. They play in a division with no competition at all. If the 2008 Yankees, with their record against AL teams, played in the NL West, they'd have a 4 game lead over Joe & Manny & Nomaaah. If they got to play the hapless Padres and the haplesser Giants 38 times, they'd have a 34 game lead over LA.
I wish I could say I remember the first time I went to a game at Yankee Stadium. You hear so many people recollect the first time they saw the infield...the first time they smelled the fresh cut grass....Truth is, I went to so many games as a kid, I have no idea when my first game was. back in the late 70's/early 80's it was not a big deal at all to drop everything, pack up the station wagon, and head to the Bronx. Now, you have to sit in front of the computer on a frigid Saturday morning in January with a few hundred dollars at the ready to get a few tickets. To one game.
That said, my Yankee Stadium favorite memory is an absolute no brainer....1996, World Series, Game 6. Thanks to one of my closest friends, and especially his brother, I was able to get into Game 6. Sat in the now famous Right Field Bleachers, Section 39. I'll never forget my friend Dave digging his brother out of the bottom of a pile of revelers after Hayes caught the pop up. 2nd favorite, Game 2 of that World Series. I was able to get my dad into his first ever WS game. A lifelong Giants fan, (baseball and football) he never got into a WS game before. That was cool, even though they lost that game. The Bernie Williams Game winning homer against Baltimore was pretty awesome as well that year. And I'll never forget the day Don Mattingly rubbed my head for good luck. Only after Mike Fischlin and Mike Otto did. I was probably 9 or 10, and I can distinctly remember Mattingly saying "Alright, now I gotta do it too"
So, will Jeter play after getting hit today? Will Mariano throw the last pitch ever at the Stadium after pitching on Friday and Saturday? Damn shame that Bob Sheppard can't take part. But I am very happy that Bernie Williams will be there. I wish Mattingly could be there. And I will miss the "old place", even though I believe the fans who came before me, who say the "old place" the real Yankee Stadium, ceased to exist in the mid 70's.
Tomorrow, we say goodbye to The House That Ruth Built. Soon, we say hello to the House That Gene Michael Built.
And don't give me that payroll shit....As the payroll got higher, their stint in the playoffs got shorter. Great rant and I feel for all the Yankee fans, but the Yanks payroll was number 1 or 2 during their last 4 World Series titles.
I'm not sure what's scarier, the way salaries in general in baseball have exploded in the last decade or the fact that the Yankees and Red Sox have almost quadrupled their payroll in 12 years.
Great rant and I feel for all the Yankee fans, but the Yanks payroll was number 1 or 2 during their last 4 World Series titles.
fair point, for sure. To clarify, back when they won, payrolls were all bunched together. The Yankees may have been 1 or 2, as you have shown, but back then the difference between the # 1 team, and the # 10 team was probably just $10-20 million. Nowadays the difference between the #1 and # 10 team in payroll is probably $100 million. As a yankee fan, I wish this would change. And with a slew of contracts coming off the books after this year, it should go down a bit. But with ARod and presumably Jeter in pinstripes for the next decade, there's $50 million per year right there.
I remember the first game I went to was 1988 when I was nine, a September game against the Red Sox. The first one I remember details of without looking was June 7, 1991 vs. Texas. The Yankees came back from 4-0 and won it in the bottom of the ninth. They stunk then but even then seeing them win it like that was cool.
I remember a lot about the 1993 season, which is still one of my favorite seasons. Still one of the best games I went to was July 25 vs. the Angels when they were down 8-0 and won 9-8 on Pat Kelly's single.
I missed out on going to a lot of games from 1996-2000 due to being in high school and college but I've more than made up for it in the last few years even if the team hasn't in various ways.
As for 1996, I'll never forget skipping school to go the parade and being right in front as each float goes by.
While it's frustrating when they haven't gone past the first round, any fan of any team will take 13 straight playoff seasons and 16 consecutive seasons with a winning record.
It's just frustrating to see some of the moves from recent years such as Carl Pavano, who really has no business being in the ballpark on such an occasion.
As for going to games back in the day, it really was easy. One such circumstance was in 1995 when my best friend from high school, who's a Met fan called me three hours before the game and asked if I wanted to go. He wanted to see Strawberry's first game and we wound up getting there and hour beforehand and scoring good seats in the LOGE level for under 20 bucks.

it's hard for me to remember my first game, b/c my dad would just saddle my sister and i up on any given day and head into the bronx (which was only 15 minute drive from our house in jersey), get good tickets without a problem because then, they were only drawing 16,000 per game.
i was at the 4-0 come from behind game, and i would have to say that was my first REAL memory of the stadium (i was only 9 at the time). charlie hayes game winning hit. my dad and i were actually talking about that yesterday.
i'll never forget sitting in the bleachers in the early 90's w/ allie and his cowbell. i remember when the bleachers didn't have assigned seating. i think they finally made it assigned at the end of the 93 season and the fans were tearing the seats up to take home with them. i still have a half of seat in my "sports trunk."
i was at the first game after mantle's death (one of the most emotional days i've been to at the stadium), and also the first game after the strike. never been to a world series game, but been to a few playoff games. my most memorable... 1998 ALCS, game 6 against the indians, the clinching game that got them into the world series. mariano sealed the deal in the 9th.
so many memories, so many games. so shitty there will only be one more game played there.

the thing with the assigned seating was 2000. it might have late in 1999 because I remember going to a day game in early Sept before going back to school where the bleacher ticket had an assigned seat on it. I don't know if that was the official policy then or just done for that day.

ESPN Classic is running great Yankee Stadium games all day, Cone's Perfecto just ended. 2001 WS Game 5 is about to start. I just wish they would dig a bit deeper. There were great games before 1996
Warning---It's a bit depessing seeing Cone, Bernie, o'Neill, Tino, Brosius, etc...and thinking about what they've turned into, Giambi, ARod, Pavano, Ponson, etc....
i have a question on that. Do you mean this decade?
No, just talking about the 2006 and 2007 playoffs. The Yankees were the only team to play in both. Just shows how difficult it is to make the playoffs. So instead of being pissed off that they are not in the playoffs this year, I am grateful that I got to watch my team in the playoffs for an incredible 13 straight years

The Pregame was AWESOME! Great to see all the greats back there on the field. It was especially cool for me seeing Catfish's wife there for him. He's a hero back home and his family are wonderful people. It's a shame he was taken so early and wasn't able to take the field tonight.
Wow, no more games in Yankee Stadium. I'm ashamed of myself as a Yankee fan for never having made a trip up for a game.

I don't know if that was the official policy then or just done for that day.

thinking about it, people were tearing the seats up in 95, not 93. i thought that's when they were going assigned. guess i am wrong, and they were just putting in new seats.
Warning---It's a bit depessing seeing Cone, Bernie, o'Neill, Tino, Brosius, etc...and thinking about what they've turned into, Giambi, ARod, Pavano, Ponson, etc....
No, just talking about the 2006 and 2007 playoffs. The Yankees were the only team to play in both. Just shows how difficult it is to make the playoffs. So instead of being pissed off that they are not in the playoffs this year, I am grateful that I got to watch my team in the playoffs for an incredible 13 straight years
ESPN is doing a whole day's worth of stuff.
Wow, no more games in Yankee Stadium. I'm ashamed of myself as a Yankee fan for never having made a trip up for a game.
