wang, pettitte, mussina, hughes and kennedy?
the only reason i question kennedy staying in the rotation is because he was just drafted last year and is already at about 120-130 innings for the year. seeing as how they have strict rules in place for joba, i can't imagine them just tossing them aside for kennedy.
although, i have no idea who the yanks would be able to slide into a rotation spot should clemens be out for a long period of time (other than the next start he is supposed to miss) assuming mussina takes his spot and kennedy was to leave the rotation. i'm just sort of rambling here.
also, i wish fox didn't have a monopoly on saturday baseball games because i wanted to see kennedy pitch.0 -

I hadn't heard that about kennedy. I was at the game on saturday and he was tremendously poised after allowing two early runs. He threw 96 pitches but only 30 something in the final four innings.Reading 2004

This could be one of the most un-fan-friendly things that has ever existed ... even if you pay for the MLB Extra innings package, you get shut out.
So, many teams have gone to Saturday night games so they can broadcast them, which, isn't as family friendly.

kennedy's innings cap is around 170. joba's is 130. i'm not really sure why kennedy is allowed to throw 40 more innings than joba, but that's the way it is. he should be good for two or three more starts. as a september call up, he wouldn't be eligible for the postseason roster anyway.
kennedy was very impressive on saturday, even if he was overshadowed by buchholz. he seemed nervous early (especially after an a-rod error cost him two runs and 18 pitches), but he settled down quickly and looked fairly dominant at times. he throws a low-90s fastball with a ton of movement on it. his other pitches look like they project well.
of the "big three" rookies, the only one i'm worried about is hughes. he still hasn't regained his velocity or command since coming off the DL. his curve, change, and slider have less movement than before.
i have to believe that he'll straighten himself out in '08. realistically, you can't take a kid who just turned 21, pull him off the DL after three months, and immediately expect him to play a key role in a playoff race. but i'd still like to see his stuff improve before he starts to lose confidence.0 -

I agree with you on hughes partially. I have complete confidence that he will be good in 2008. I see him next year going something like 8-6 in the first half as he makes his way around the league the first time and then something like 8-4 or 9-3 after the break. I think a full throwing program in the offseason will be the best cure for his healing from a hamstring injury.Reading 2004

yea i hope i get backs to 95mph. you see in his starts it's just a few bad pitches. Keeps throwing to many balls out of the strike zone. like it's not coming out of his hands right.I miss igotid880 -

i don't understand why kennedy gets 170 and joba gets 130, unless the yanks brass is taking into effect that joba is throwing his major league innings in relief where he's basically just gassing it out at 95+ for an inning with his slider tossed in. that's the only thing i can think of.
i have no basis for any judgement on kennedy as i didn't see him pitch live (thanks fox) or even on highlights.
hughes should straighten himself out in '08. he'll obviously have the 'rookie' learning curve once more teams see him live and on tape. he was dominant against the rangers when he got hurt and i watched most of the game he pitched against the indians in cleveland. the indians hitters just looked like they had no clue between his fastball and his curve.
it will be interesting in the next couple years to see the yanks with wang, hughes, kennedy and most likely joba in the starting rotation and the sox with beckett, daisuke, lester and buchholz.0 -

and the 3:55 est start time make ZERO sense to me. i hate it to be perfectly honest. at least you can still watch the 7pm est games even when the fox game runs late.
as for clemens, i'm pretty sure he is paid per start - although i'm not sure and i really, really doubt roger will just hang it up when there money left on the table...although i'm guessing your question was rhetorical.0 -

it's always something. when i was in college, i didn't get YES network in my dorm (even though i was in NYC). but because i was in NYC, the local games were blacked out on both ESPN and MLB.TV.
but a friend of mine ordered MLB.TV to watch the red sox (he was one of your own), and we found that the yankees' opening day game was in fact available. so i immediately ordered the package myself, only to find out that the yankee game had been broadcast by mistake. there would be no more to follow, and they wouldn't give me a refund either.
and, of course, the reason why the yankees and tigers had to play at 11 PM last week was because FOX (saturday) and ESPN (sunday) wouldn't allow the doubleheader game to be broadcast on either day. ridiculous.
and don't even get me started on joe buck and tim mccarver.
regarding clemens, i'm pretty sure he still gets paid if he's injured (and this one looks kinda serious... there are no minor elbow injuries). they saved about a million dollars during his suspension though.0 -

interleague play is also a culprit. because of those games, the yankees only make one visit to many non AL East cities like Detroit. This year, they made or will make two visits to Chicago and Kansas City. and there was no way, they'd have played two on getaway day.Reading 2004

that's an important aspect, although i believe the innings caps were determined before joba became a RP.
other than that, i have no idea. kennedy is a year older than joba, and maybe he threw more innings last year (but i don't really know off the top of my head). that's all i can think of.JSBE wrote:it will be interesting in the next couple years to see the yanks with wang, hughes, kennedy and most likely joba in the starting rotation and the sox with beckett, daisuke, lester and buchholz.
yeah, and both organizations still have plenty of prospects to fill out the fifth spot. scary...0 -
Apparently Clemens started having problems with the elbow the other day against Boston. Mussina was ready as emergency starter today just in case he couldn't go:
Yanks had already planned on giving Kennedy at least one more start even before the Clemens situation popped up. There are going to be an entirely different set of rules for Kennedy than Joba. Joba was switched to the bullpen 2/3 of the way through the season. Pitching every 5 days is different than being ready to go 3 or 4 times a week.
Tomorrow's starters: Chien-Ming Wang (16-6, 3.79 ERA) vs. Horacio Ramirez (8-4, 6.55 ERA).
Up 1 Game in the Wild Card Race (even in the Loss column)Brian0 -

form wikipedia:Clemens agreed to a pro-rated one year deal worth $28,000,022 or about $4.5 million per month between June and September. The contract includes a no-trade clause
They'll end up paying him somewhere around $18 million for his 6 wins. This weekend we rock Portland0 -
Kennedy has a higher innings cap because he threw more innings in college and pitched for USA baseball and winter leagues I believe.0

Damn...what a flat past 4 games...
I don't get it. A killer "high" boston series then they look dead as could be against the last place d-rays and m's. Can't do that in Sept when you're trying to get in. The hitting has been disgusting. Damon, Giambi, Jeter at times, Matsui. Get the F with it!!!
A-Rod sometimes looks like the only guy who truly wants to win and plays hard. Never thought I'd say it. Even when they were down 5-1 yesterday A-rod was screaming, fist pumping, fired up and making plays.PJ - 36

This is from the NY Post last week for anyone who missed it: YANKS’ TOP PICK TO HAVE SURGERY
Latest on Clemens: cortisone shot tomorrow then wait and see............interesting how a blister on his foot is what he is blaming for the cause of his elbow problem
Big one tonight. Recipe for victory: 7 good innings from Wang and a flawless 8th and 9th from Joba and Mo. That's what I'm hoping for at least.Brian0 -
NICE play by Matsui/Jorgie
and nice double play!
