I read this theory in the paper in the op-ed page in 2004. Someone pointed out that whenever there is a republican for president the Yankees have never won the World Series.

I think the stat was during an election year if the Republicans won the presidency, the Yankees have never won a World Series. They have won several when Eisenhower was president and several in the 20's when Republicans were president for the entire decade.

So don't go blaming the Yankees being mired in last place on W. ;)

    * Edit and my theory doesn't hold fruition either as W won in 2000 and the Yankees won the Series - unless of course you feel Gore really won. ;)

Yankees have not won a world series with a republican in office since beating the Milwaukee Braves in 1958.

They won the World Series with a Republican in office the following years:

    1923 - Calvin Coolidge
    1927 - Calvin Coolidge
    1928 - Calvin Coolidge
1932 - Herbert Hoover (When Babe Ruth had a better year than Hoover too)
    1953 - Eisenhower
    1956 - Eisenhower
    1958 - Eisenhower

Since 1958, their worst times have come with a Republican in office. They sucked through most of the Nixon era but that was purely because guys like Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford all got old at once and there were not enough replacements. Also in 1965, the amateur draft was instituted and therefore the Yankees could not just sign any college or high school kid.

During the years 1981-1992 when Reagan and Bush were president, the Yankees ranged between good regular season teams and awful ones. In years like 1985 and 1986, they had enough talent to get a wild card had there been one then. By the late 1980s, years of bad signings and poor trades had finally caught up to them and resulted in 1990, a 67-95 disaster. By the end of the Bush years in 1992, the Yankees showed some respectability under Buck Showalter and then as Clinton came in they spent and traded wisely while not sacrificing guys like Bernie Williams and Andy Pettitte.

Since winning it all with that core in 2000, the Yankees have danced with the things that made them very good regular season teams during the mid 1980s. They have been enticed by the name and not necessary the chemistry and their pitching mistakes have been documented earlier in this thread.

It is strictly an odd coincidence. But if you want an odd parallel, each of the Mets two' championships have been with republicans in office and their worst seasons have been with democrats in office, 1993, 1962, 1977 etc.

So it's Bush's fault for the Yankees, too?! Hee hee.

Man oh man this sucks beyond comprehension! I mean, it really sucks!

A guy pulls a suicide squeeze off of Andy?! What the...?

    This is totally bogus.

    Hmph.

those are signs it's not your year, a straight steal of home for the winning run. these are games the yankees used to win many times in the past.

Giambi's injury could be worse than they originally thought and he could get suspended (doubtful) by the commish. Posada is hurting and Hughes is nowhere near ready to return. Nothing seems to go right for this club this year.

That'd be cool if Alex actually called for the ball and made Clark the 3rd basemen from the Blue Jays let it go. And people say he doesn't want to win. That's what the Yankees need. That kind of luck.

    You're funny!

I saw that down here (STILL in Fla, I want to go home :( .....

Man oh man! That is SKETCHY!! They do indeed have full frontal nudity strip clubs in Canada btw. I went when I was in college (to a male stripper place).

I mean even if there is an 'explanation' it still makes A-Rod look like a skeeze and embarrasses his family, which is bad.
    I do not like him.

Thank God for ESPN though. So now we're 'only' 13 1/2 back. Eesh. I hope this w/e does not result in the Boston Massacre Part 2.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/2007/05/31/2007-05-31_giambi_out_for_at_least_a_month-2.html

More bad news on the injury front. Hughes sprained his ankle doing "agility drills" and is out an additional 4-6 weeks. Giambi is out for at least a month with his foot problem also.

Anyone else think that if the shoe was on the other foot last night and it was A-Rod playing 3B and let a ball drop in then everyone would be laughing at him for missing a pop up and calling him a whiner for complaining about it? This whole thing is about A-Rod and not about the actual play.

7.5 games out of the wild card after last night
