I never said you are stupid :) I just stated an opinion and find "whatever" to be quite an irritating response. If you don't want or expect debate, don't post. It's a "discussion" board.

I felt like you were making fun of me by saying "an intelligent answer" in response to my "whatever." I said whatever b/c God or Jesus have been discussed ad nauseum (sp?) on the message pit. :)

What exactly is wrong with finding God. Generally, it means that they are trying to live a better life, be kinder to others, more honest, etc.

Even if you don't believe in God, it's pretty difficult to come up with rational reasons to argue against those.

I wouldn't mind if one (one ;)) of my friends suddenly "found god" I would, however, be irritated if he was self-righteous about it, and I think this might be the case here.

ive had friends that were already christian so i thought they already found jesus... but then they mustve found some sortof super jesus because they went from being physically unavailable on sundays to being mentally unavailable 24/7... i honestly dont get it... if youve got this benevolent all-knowing leader, he'd have to have the mindset of a child to expect you to devote every second of everyday to himself... thats selfish... but then people turn it around like im selfish because jesus died for MY sins... one of my friends actually said to me once "do you have any idea how much crucifixion hurts??"... um yah... probably alot... christians

I'm not religious, and there are certain aspects of religion that I don't care for, but I don't see why a general belief in God is any reason to be upset.

People who look down on others for believing in God are no different than those who look down on others for not believing in God.

I'm not calling out any poster(certainly not the one I'm quoting from), but this quote from earlier in this thread can be used to describe both of the aforementioned positions.
There is nothing more infuriating than a person who patronises you because they think they know something you don't when they could just accept that not everyone thinks the way they do

My ex-husband is a former drug addict and is now a God addict. Obviously it's better to be addicted to God and the bible than drugs, but.... he's creepy and extreme in his beliefs. He doesn't eat animal products because that "gets in the way of my relationship with the Lord." My daughter went with him to a church camp last summer and when she came back I felt like she had been completely brain-washed. Looking in her eyes was like staring into the glass eyes of a doll. I was so scared for her. She has read the bible every day since. My family doesn't go to church or read the bible, so she's the only one of us who does. I told her that she better not get brainwashed this year when she goes to camp and if she does, I won't take her back-to-school clothes shopping. :D
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

I don't have a problem with people finding god. I have a problem with people trying to make me look for him too.

    lmao!! :D

My friend, who I mentioned in an earlier post is married to a pentecostal preacher that she met at church camp was always SOOOO different after coming back from camp. It was honestly hard to be around her at first...and then after a few weeks, she'd fall back into her normal, slightly less judgmental and sheltered version of herself, lol.

Look. It's not as though he said this to his friend. He's venting, and there is nothing wrong with that. Furthermore, none of us has any first hand experience with long red's friend and how he/she is dealing with his/her new hobby. For all you know, his friend is being "rude as shit" and isn't interested in respecting long red's way of life.

Just live and let live. If your friend is happy then you should be happy for him. Different strokes for different folks. Atheism can be its own form of brainwashing.

I found God a long time ago. But I happen to think that He doesn't like to be used as a crutch or a name dropping thing or as a reason that "I am so better than you...".

those who really find God do not need to do that. honestly.

Similarly annoying is when you stop going to church, but the rest of your family is still religious as hell (haha... me so ironic), and 8 years later, your mom still says "I prayed for you in church today. Because we know someday, you'll come back to the church. You will."

"yes, because we all know that if you go to church you are a better person and you are soooooo like Jesus..........."

but I do not think Jesus ran around singing, "My God is better than your God!!! You are going to hell!!!!! But I will pray for your sorry ass........."

    right?

I'm not a firm believer in "God", but what if there is one?

After punching him in the throat, who would look like the jack ass..

I think if there is a "god" we are all part of it. Our intuition is all connected to something our simple minds can't even grasp.

Maybe by "finding god" he really means he found himself..

Well red, I don't know about punching them in the throat, but I often have the desire to scream. However I don't think I'd say it's just when a friend finds God because I've had friends find God and they've been perfectly reasonable about it, in other words they've discovered something that's very important to them and it's only enhanced their true nature not turned them into an evangelical.

So I'll qualify and say I struggle mightily when friends have an epiphany of any kind and feel the need to rant on endlessly at me about their new found "thing". A few experiences come to mind.

A friend became seriously ill, they latched on to a microbiotic diet to try to heal themselves. That's great and I understand you'd freak out and be fearful in those circumstances, desperately trying anything, but I don't need the lectures. Or for it to be a constant source of conversation between us simply because they couldn't discuss their illness. I sure as hell don't need to be nagged at that I need to join them otherwise I'll suffer dire consequences.

The other example that springs to mind is when friends have been approached by direct marketing schemes and they're suckered in.
Amway, Herbalife, that kind of thing. Actually now that you mention it, when I've lost friends to the dark side like that I've had an overwhelming urge to punch them in the throat. :D
    NOPE!!!

I don't think there's anything wrong with finding God.

i believe in God too and i'll admit when i first "found God" i was a bit overzealous, but i needed to be about some things. i had a hard life and for me it was like cleaning and weeding out all the bad things. and i know that without God in my life, i would've killed myself. everyone needs something to believe in at one time or another. i really truly felt and feel "saved" because i know i wouldn't be here without it. that's what people mean when they use that word. something changed their perspective about life and they feel like they've really found something. their belief in God saved them! like i said, some get overzealous but a lot of times they mellow out over time. :)

It's more than likely that he didn't actually find god, but instead found the need to find him. That's generally the case with most people who "find" god. They just become so desperate for everything to make sense with a simple answer that they just give up on truth and instead embrace fantasy.

One might say live and let live, but if you truly are his friend and sincerely care for his well-being, you have an obligation to do everything in your power to ensure that he reliquinshes his desire for spirituality before it's too late -before he loses any hope of understanding life on life's terms rather than through the twisted lens of religion's terms.
