I know its early, but with the draft coming up, and free agency, didn't feel like posting this shit in the 2007 thread.

Rex Grossman signed a 1yr deal with the Bears, and is expected to compete with at least Kyle Orton for the starting job.

Ruben Brown, Fred Miller, Darwin Walker, and Moose have all been cut loose or told they won't be resigned.

They decided against franchise tagging Berrian (thank christ) and think they have offered him an adequate long term deal. But both Berrian and Briggs are expected to test the market.

With that said, I love clearing up some cap space by dumping useless players (what a bust Darwin Walker was!). Moose was okay, but for the money he was getting, he just didn't contribute enough. But the WR corp could be ultra thin this year, the offense already sucked enough didn't it.

ps Fuck Cedric Benson

  • I'd say Briggs and Berrian are as good as gone. I'd love for them to resign Ayanbedejo, but don't think that'll happen either.

They will probably sign Faneca and a FA reciever.

Then draft OT, QB, WR, OT...in that order.

I was actually going to start this thread today :p

Anyways, it seems like the Bears org. is making some smart moves this off-season. I like them signing Grossman to a one year deal. I think Moose is a good guy, just not worth that kind of money and very much just an average WR in the league. They need to dismantle that OL and start fresh.
  • Rex is our quarterback.

All signs certainly point to OT in the 1st and QB in the 2nd, with WR and safety at some point. I could even see RB in there actually.

I'd be more than happy with Faneca, but I heard plenty of teams want to pony up the dough to get him. Bears should be way under the cap right now, but that doesn't mean much.
  • Also, wouldn't mind them going after Michael Turner.

All I know they better start making an investment in a great QB... nevermind wishful thinking damn Bears are always too friggen cheap...

I need some help up here with all the Packers fans around me.. Id love to give them something to choke on...
  • Also, wouldn't mind them going after Michael Turner.

I would love that, absolutely love it. But I don't see it happening. Only because they won't cut Benson loose. Turner is the top FA back, plenty of teams will go after him. So unless the Bears get a hometown discount, or can trade Benson for a carton of smokes...

Berrian gone sucks, but whatever. Fuck him and hopefully we'll get to kick his ass twice a year.

But Briggs is back to hopefully the D will stay intact.
  • Very surprised Briggs resigned. I thought for sure they'd use the money elsewhere (offensive line and safety) and plug guys they already had at LB in Briggs place. But I'm glad he's back, one less hole on the depth chart to worry about.

Not surprised at all that Berrian left. That seems like way too much money, but the bottom line is the bears just lost their #1 and #2 WRs. Making Bradley and Hester move up on the depth chart.

I really don't think the Bears can fill all of these weakspots thru the draft, so hopefully they go out and sign a few key freeagents.

cmon speedy. lets think postive right now. the bears still have so many holes that that's really all we have right now.

Also, the more I think about it...if Mendenhall is stil there, the Bears will draft him.

Yeah, I'm quite shocked that were able to come to a deal with Briggs. I would have bet a lot of money that he was gone. I think Berrian has a lot of potential, but couldn't catch the f'n ball while in Chicago...so I don't see him losing as much of a "loss". Like you said, I can't see them landing a top-quality WR in the draft so I also expect them to have to go after someone. I think Hester is a stud, but I don't think he's going to be a fulltime WR.

If Ron Turner gets his way.....

But 14 is way too high to take him IMO. Not to mention they absolutely need to get a quality OT.

Bears should pick up Shaun Alexander so they do not have to draft a RB.

They then can go all Offensive Line and QB.

I like Mendenhall but the Bears have too many other needs. We have bad luck drafting Running Backs. Our best back in the last decade IMO was Thomas Jones (Free agent)

It kills me that we have Benson (4th pick overall) and Curtis Enis (5th overall pick) and Vikings got Peterson last year at the 7th pick overall.

It would all depend on the type of contract Alexander wants. I can't see locking him into a multi deal, or giving him a ton of guaranteed money, not with the injuries he's had the last 2 years not to mention his age. But he would certainly be an upgrade over Benson, even if he only plays half the season.

Really hope they don't draft Mendenhall, they need OL BADLY. No RB would do well with how shitty the line is right now.

Yeah, they need to do whatever it takes to fix that shitty offensive line.

Benson arrested on intoxicated boating charge

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson failed a sobriety test while operating a 30-foot boat, then resisted arrest before being hit with pepper spray and dragged ashore by officers.

Benson faces charges of boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest after the incident Saturday night on Lake Travis, Travis County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Roger Wade said.

Benson was released from jail early Sunday on a $14,500 bond. A call to Benson’s agent was not immediately returned.

Benson was operating the boat with 15 passengers aboard when he was stopped by a Lower Colorado River Authority officer for a random safety inspection. He failed a field sobriety test on the officer’s boat and was uncooperative when the officer tried to take him ashore, the authority said.

“When Benson did not pass the test, he presented himself as a threat to the officer and argued about whether or not he would be taken to land to have a follow-up field sobriety test performed on land and refused to put on a life jacket,” the authority said in a statement.

The officer had to use pepper spray to subdue Benson. He then refused to leave the officer’s boat and authorities had to drag him to a car to be taken to the Travis County jail, the authority said.

Benson has had legal problems before.

He was sentenced to eight days in jail in 2003 for a misdemeanor trespassing charge after forcing his way into an apartment to look for a reported stolen TV. In 2002, misdemeanor drug and alcohol charges against him were dropped.

Benson rushed for more than 5,500 yards and 64 touchdowns at the University of Texas, going for 1,000 yards in four straight seasons.

The 25-year-old has done little since the Bears took him with the fourth pick of the 2005 draft.

As a rookie he couldn’t beat out Thomas Jones and rushed for 272 yards in nine games. He was more effective the next season while sharing time with Jones, going for six touchdowns and 647 yards.

Last year, Benson took over as the featured back after Jones was traded away. He rushed for 674 yards, four touchdowns and 3.4 yards a carry before going on injured reserve in November.

In three years with the Bears, Benson has rushed for 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 3.8 yards a carry. He’s also missed 13 games.

Although I have to say... pepper spray may have been excessive use of force. It would have only taken one cop to tackle him!

i've always been a rex backer...which hasn't always been easy.

if he doesn't get it done this year, they they need to go free agent.

i know. he sucks, right? he's too short, right?
i just love the guy. i really want him to succeed.
he's got a great arm. he's short. his teammates love him.

i just want him to have a QB rating in the 80s....consistantly for a year. if he does that, he stays.
would be nice if he didn't have an ancient line, no RB and some WR, but who's complaining.
i just want him to do well.

rex...get it done this year. please..............
  • LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Bears on Tuesday released Adam Archuleta. Playing in 15 games with 10 starts in 2007, the veteran safety registered 64 tackles, two sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery.

The Bears acquired Archuleta from the Washington Redskins on March 22, 2007 in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

The 5-11, 215-pounder had been benched by the Redskins midway through the 2006 season after signing the richest free-agent contract by a safety in NFL history.

With the Bears, Archuleta struggled in run support and pass coverage. He broke his hand in a Week 3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, sat out one game, and then returned the following week. He eventually lost his starting job in late November to Brandon McGowan.

In his lone season in Chicago, Archuleta failed to revert to the form he displayed in St. Louis when Bears coach Lovie Smith and defensive coordinator Bob Babich were Rams assistants.

With Smith serving as Rams defensive coordinator during Archuleta's first three NFL seasons, the Arizona State product started 12 games and helped St. Louis reach the Super Bowl as a rookie in 2001 before registering career highs with 116 tackles in 2002 and five sacks in 2003.

I actually feel for you Bears fans. You'll probably only win two games this year - both against my beloved Packers! Why is it that you keep beating us when you're so bad?

Good luck this season with getting third place in the North. Those Lions will put up a good fight...

This was a great move. Robbie has been nothing more than a stud the last two years. For a team that has little offense this was nice!

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP)—Robbie Gould became the highest paid kicker, agreeing to a five-year, $15.5 million contract extension with the Chicago Bears that includes a $4.25 million signing bonus on Monday.

    The deal runs through 2013.

“I’m excited about the contract I signed,” Gould, who had a year left on his contract, said during a conference call with reporters. “I’m excited to be a Bear. … This is definitely a win-win on both ends.”

Gould has made 84 of 99 field-goal attempts and 99 of 100 PATs with the Bears. He hit 31 of 36 field-goal attempts last season and made the Pro Bowl after the 2006 season, when he scored 143 points.

Gould hit a game-winning 49-yarder in overtime to send the Bears past Seattle in the playoff opener following the 2005 season. Chicago went on to the Super Bowl.

His new deal trumps the five-year, $14.2 million contract Josh Brown signed with St. Louis on March 1.

“He obviously helped to set another standard, and I’m very happy he got his deal done, which helped me in order to set my parameters and work on getting a deal done with Chicago,” Gould said.

Gould was an undrafted free agent out of Penn State in 2005. He first signed with New England, then spent time with Baltimore before going to the Bears in October of that year.

“It gives undrafted free agents an opportunity to step back and say, ‘I can make it’ and ‘One day I can get to that point where I can get a new contract,”’ Gould said. “You’re just looking to get an opportunity, and it made my hungry. I knew that when I was cut from two teams that I would eventually get an opportunity. Would I have ever thought that I would have lasted this long with the Chicago Bears? Probably not, because it was supposed to be a week-to-week deal that turned out to be, hopefully, a long career in Chicago.”

yeah thats probably an accurate prediction.

    I'm saying 7 wins.

Just good enough to get a middle-round draft pick like the OT (Williams - Vandy) they got this year that won't amount to shit. Why the fuck did they pass on Rashard Mendenhall???
