hmm dunk you can be pedantic at times. black people didnt just spring up on the north american continent you know. they were taken there. thats the heritage im talking about. their original black african heritage. you know BEFORE they were shoved into the belly of a ship and it was considered 'lucky' if they survived the middle passage. im well aware the slave trade and forced emigartion no longer exists.

If Kenya had a society that favored the black majority and gave white people inferior pay and inferior educations than black people, along with a history of oppression of white people, then yes you could. By all means, you should.
You can't just look at the fact that they are a minority. You have to put the minority in its proper social/economic/historical context within the country.

Good point... Irish is actually considered a 'race' and yet we're as white/pink as any other white/pink people... and yet 'black' is only one race for a pretty huge group of people.

well, don't get me wrong, it won't be forgotten for a while BUT I'd never use it as an excuse for why I'm unemployed at the moment or why I was in a shitty job in the first place that's simply cos I'm lazy and incompetent... my brother and sister are quite the opposite. The other night in the pub quiz there was a question about the Queen and I said 'well I haven't a clue' and one of the lads said 'oh I forgot, you hate the queen, don't ya' (just joking) and I said 'well doesn't everyone?' and yeh, sure enough they did the same lad pointed at the union jack once and asked me if it offends me. He's a really nice guy but I think it points out that, joking or not, some people will always remember that I'm not from here... which is fine by me obviously... but that's just how it is and I wouldn't have it any other way

I have to agree here... regardless of what they say about the US, I think the UK is a much better example of a melting pot and how 'minorities' have all blended in. Most groups of kids I see are mixed somehow. It's WORKED here for some reason.

Why? because tracing back your African roots is not the same as tracing back to your Irish, Scottish, Italian, Japanese,ect...I don't think Africans would like it the idea that they're all the same culture and beliefs.
It's like different Native American tribes...
I'm not black but based on my experiences in workplace meetings, classes, social gatherings, I'm usually the one who represent the "minority." So as far as I'm concern, when blacks promote products that are design for their people, it's more of a cry for a voice, a chance, a representation.
Like it or not, blacks are not represented enough or misrepresented in the overall scheme of society. I also don't think they are trying to be better or feel superior than whites, they just want to be represented.
But when you're a majority(whites in America), and you want a themed production based on your race then, unfortunately it does seem racist because you already have majority of it.
I do agree it's "selective" but not racist, which is why they do not advance in the overall scheme of society. They are held back by design, and a lot of it has to be blame on the so-call black "leaders" as well who continues to promote this kind of practice- which is good to a certain degree but you're not gonna be in the whole picture if you are "selective."
And at the same token, I think whites who feel that somehow they're are discriminated against by these practices are in a way "racist by design" but not racist at heart.
We just need to understand each other's points of view. That's all.
might also interest you to know that peter norman was not invited to the 2000 sydney olympics in any official capacity by the australian olympic authorities despite his 200m australian record standing for nearly 40 years. however, he was invited by the UNITED STATES team as their guest.
p.s. peter norman was at the unveiling of that statue.
One of the things that kept him going was the hope that he would be welcomed and recognised at the Sydney Olympics. As his nephew puts it: "Then his life would have come full circle."
He was to be disappointed. In 2000, Peter Norman found himself the only Australian Olympian to be excluded from making a VIP lap of honour at the Games, despite his status as one of the best sprinters in the home country's history.
But the US athletics team were not going to ignore this omission. They invited Norman to stay at their own lodgings during the games, and welcomed him as one of their own. In an extraordinary turn of events, it was hurdling legend Ed Moses who greeted him at the door, and that year's 200m champion Michael Johnson who hugged him, saying: "You are my hero."
that last paragraph is awesomeness encapsulated!!!
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
and my point was (in agreement with your post) , if i moved to Kenya and became ' a minority ' would it be acceptable for me to start a Society for White Travellers group? or a White Persons Prisoner SUpport Group? after all i'd be in the minority... as this seems to be the argument.
if the awards show was "Music of African Origin" then that'd be cool... i could then start a "Music of Scottish Origin" awards show... but its called the Music of Black Origin awards, and so therefore can i start my Music Of White Origin awards then? no is the answer... it'd be called 'racist'...
...
Hey...
I'll give you my take on this... and trust me, I used to feel a lot like you do.
I believe the answer depends... It depends upon the circumstances of your current social environment and and your position within that invironment.
If you live in the United States, for example, the predominant power, politically, socially and economically, is being driven by Western Civilization... i.e. Whites of European ancestry. People may argue with this, but they cannot present any facts that proves otherwise.
Now... if you are white... it is the 'norm' in America. Minorities are expected to assimilate into this Western, Anglo-European society. So, when something like Black Entertainment Television comes along... it is just a small segment of this society trying to represent itself in this predominantly Anglo-centric culture.
...
Now... If those roles were reversed... in the parallel Universe where America's corridors of power were driven by African ancestry and culture... and you were the minority that was expected to assimilate into that culture... the world would probably look a lot different. In this parallel world... you have pretty much lost your Scottish heritage and just got lumped in with the Irish, English, German, Swedish, Polish, Austrians, Swiss, Danes, Fins, French, etc... as one collective White or "European-American" minority segment in the largely African culture of America. Your schools teach of your African Heritage and how they created this nation where everyone is equal... as long as you play along and act as if you were black.
If you were to come up with a White Entertainment Television Station... one of the 151 stations being broadcast... then, I would say the answer to your question is, "No. You would NOT be considered a racist". The racist would be the Black person... who runs the show... telling you you are a racist for trying to cling to your culture and that HIS television broadcasts should be good enough for you... and you just need to deal with it.
...
And on an off topic... It is not Black people, in general, who feel that people like Jesse Jackson speaks for all blacks. It is White people who believe this. And following their own logic... this would mean that Reverend Pat Robertson speaks for ALL Christians... or Sean Hannity speaks for ALL Conservatives... and Eddie Vedder speaks for all Pearl Jam fans. None of these cases are true... yet, the common belief is that Black people are represented and spoken for by Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
Why is that?

I was gonna drop it but I am gonna say this real quick to explain something.
I would hire anyone who was right for the job. I could care less what color they were. That said.....here is what I have experienced. A person looking for a job from the, I don't know... the burbs comes in, they USUALLY dress for the job. Even if its for a cashier job they "dress for success" (I am sure you have heard this term). When a person from a bad part of town comes in for a job (in my experience now) they dont dress for the part, they are not prepared, and they have poor work history. Thats why they do not get hired.
You would be shocked at they type of people who come in for a job.
Stained shirt, drunk! Very rude. Ever held a job fair in Atlantic City?
I did not think so.
Sorry for getting so angry but some of you in here talk like you have a clue to what its like to deal with the low low low income minorities. Maybe they were raised bad and so on and so on. I understand that but its not an excuse.
...
Boy... you are making this real easy for me. You are stressing the exact points I am trying to make.
You are always harping on taxes, taxes, taxes... let the Private Sector take care of the problem, not Government. Then, you... BEING part of that Private Sector come up with excuses by painting all with a broad brush and fail to do anything to help.
There is probably a reason why they don't have 'nice clothes'. Probably because they have no money to BUY nice clothing... because they don't have a job because people won't hire them. The same goes for a good work history. How do you build a good resume if no one will hire you?
...
And please, don't even try to lecture me on under priviledged people. I have set foot inside the complexes of a couple of the most notorious public housing projects in the country... 'Dogtown' (a.k.a. The Mead Housing Projects) and Nickerson Gardens in Watts, CA. (look them up). I know that there are not just 'lazy poor people' living there. There are plenty of old people and little kids that call those places, 'Home'. I know that the kids that play baseball in Dogtown look at the forboding grey walls of the Los Angeles Men's Central Jail, with triple concertina wire running along the top, out in left field. How do I know that? Because I've stood at the plate. Imagine growing up in a place like that. I can't.
Sure, I was there during daylight... with a large contingent of L.A. City Youth Corp or voluenteer groups... and yeah, it was scary. And HELL NO... there's no fucking way I would go there alone at night. I am able to travel the 30 some-ott miles to the cozy confines of my home in Cypress, CA. The people that live in those projects have to put up with the stress of living there.
And the job opportunities? There are rows of abandoned warehouses and receiving docks in those neighborhoods. There are no places... no super markets or Taco Bells for them to get jobs. The jobs are a bus ride away and where do they get the bus fare?
And job fairs? I sat at the table of my company's booth at job fairs in North Long Beach/Compton and took in applications for entry level jobs.. when my company used to have entry level jobs. All of those jobs have since been contracted out to outside vendors to cut our operating costs and increase our bottom line to boost revenues and increase our stock price. I didn't see these people as objects of hatred and disgust... just people who needed a job and were willing to take it. I really didn't give a shit what they were wearing. That's the difference between you and me. We are different and we see the world... and the people in it... in a completely different light.
...
And let me add... If I were in their shoes... turned down left and right by employers looking for suburban people instead of me... you're damn right I'd be drunk. Because when I'm drunk... maybe I'll forget how fucked up my life is.
Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

There’s a million issues that are two-faced when it comes to race.
It’s my opinion that it only reinforces the crutch and some ways prevents a race from moving forward.
i just wonder sometimes what would happen if i started up a "MOWO Awards Ceremony" in which only white musicians were celebrated? .
um... i think you would be hard pressed to create enough categories to have your little ceremony. i can't think of many musical genres with a "white origin" actually.
"When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."
um... i think you would be hard pressed to create enough categories to have your little ceremony. i can't think of many musical genres with a "white origin" actually.
There's no doubt jazz&blues had a huge influence on modern music but a cross fertilization of influences and progressions that were already in America had to have had an influence in their creation also. And I assume they utilised instruments that were of white european origin.
Another negative slant on the MOBO's is that the BBC use British licence payers money to promote these discriminatory awards, funds from the majority are used to support a minority. As an ethnic group, asians outnumber blacks in the UK so what about them? s'pose they get enough coverage already these days
I haven't a problem with them calling it MOBO, if it makes them feel better. And its narrow definition of what is 'black music' still makes it no worse that the Brits or whatever but when these awards come around many people remark similar to the OP and it becomes a calling card for racists.

There's an asian BBC radio station and asians can and have been nominated for MOBOs. I still don't see the issue. There is music of black origin out there. Why can't it be celebrated?
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

For the record, the majority of the themed awards, channels, products, whatever is out there is not being made or publsihed solely to make us feel better or superior than whites.
This is the common misconception with the conversative white minds.
We just want to be represented (though in the realm of entertainment, it's a bit of a stretch for some minority groups).
There's no misconception, I never alleged any feeling of superiority was involved. Nor did I make any referance to general black culture cos I'd have no business going there. Just don't see the point of labelling music to racial origin.
None of the black music I love has ever been represented, so I've a slight problem with them yea, and they replicate so much that is the cock obsessed mainstream anyway I wonder what the point is.

That's all.

Hail, Hail!!!
Boy... you are making this real easy for me.
Hail, Hail!!!

There’s a million issues that are two-faced when it comes to race.
It’s my opinion that it only reinforces the crutch and some ways prevents a race from moving forward.

um... i think you would be hard pressed to create enough categories to have your little ceremony. i can't think of many musical genres with a "white origin" actually.
http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Debussy
This is the common misconception with the conversative white minds.
We just want to be represented (though in the realm of entertainment, it's a bit of a stretch for some minority groups).

None of the black music I love has ever been represented, so I've a slight problem with them yea, and they replicate so much that is the cock obsessed mainstream anyway I wonder what the point is.
