no, it doesn't bother them if you're pro-religion. it bothers them that you're pro-religion and are so arrogant about it that you pity anyone who isn't. why can you not grasp that?

precisely. becos the friend is very excited and happy about his decision. and then to have a stranger or close friend suddenly pissing on his parade is upsetting and angers them. if the friend had doubts, he'd ask. likewise, shut the fuck up about your goddamn god unless someone's asking.

and don't jump into religious threads if you don't want to hear about God. can't you see you put yourself in the situation by entering a conversation about God.

hey ss; i'm going to pray for you every day just to piss you off.

OK - here's how I see it. Slow and simple for ya:

    1. I am not offended by athiests or by someone bashing my religion.

    2. They are offended by someone being pro-religious, yet feel it is OK to bash religion.

Now I might be biased, but I think the hypocrite is the person in #2.

You're acting this way about religion and calling it compassion.

precisely. maybe this is why the atheists are so angry... they're really just compassionately trying to show you how wrong you are and how you should embrace the true belief system before it's too late and you've wasted all your sundays in church?

Because it's not the same thing. You're jumping from one thing to something else there.

It's like this (3rd time): One camp bashes freely and claims to be offended by getting bashed (that's hypocritical). The other camp doesn't get offended by bashing and therefore should have a right to bash back (or express their religious views).

    1. atheists are not offended by you believing in god.

    2. they are offended by you bashing them for not doing so. they dont feel it is ok to bash religion, they do it becos you bash them first and they do it out of frustration and all-too-human shortcomings of fighting fire with fire.

no, the atheists are not perfect. but they're also only human. and when you fight dirty with your passive-aggressive bullshit (i dont bash their beliefs, i just feel so sorry for those stupid, pathetic sinners), they fight dirty back. no, it's not good, but they can hardly be blamed. perhaps if you got some of your christian brothers and sisters to stop acting like their shit dont stink and they are god's gift to this heathen world, then you wouldn't have this problem. focus your pity on them, not the atheists. the atheists dont need it.

hey hey now, when you say "they are offended" the wording implies all atheist. don't make assumptions. surely all atheists aren't offended.

there's a big difference between someone of religion and someone who winds thier God up on sunday. that is one of the biggest sins because it mocks God. the reason being that you know better. intent has a lot to do with it.

So... what about a guy like me?
I believe in God... but, do not believe the Bible is the truth... mainly because it was written by Man and in the captivity of the Church for so long. The God in the Bible... In my view... is more created in Man's image, than the other way around. He does some stuff in there that are more like things Man does to his fellow man, rather than a benevolent God would do to his creation.
I love the teaching of Jesus and try to relate them into my life... but, as for Him being my saviour and that whole resurrection thing... the jury is still out as far as I'm concerned.
I stay away from churches... although, I believe Notre Dame is a beautiful building, it pales in comparison to a Pacific sunset... the place i speak to my God at. I don't talk to Him every Sunday... because He busy with everyone else. I talk to God when i need to. I don't lean on Him with my petty problems... I'm saving His shoulder for the really big things that will happen in my life. Just as I don't dump my screw ups on Jesus. I screwed up... I am responsible and i am accountable for them.
I don't care whether a person is Christian or Jewish or Muslim or Atheist or Scientologist as long as they are not a dick to me. I do not subscribe to any religion because I do not fit well into structured belief. Religions have proven time and time again how they do not coincide with my personal beliefs. I'll take my own road, thanx.
    ...
I'm not Christian... i don't know if Jesus is my saviour... I'm going to Hell? I like to believe that God isn't that petty and Jesus isn't that egotistical and They both accept me for who I am and what I do. If they are actually like those judgemental entities religions tell me they are... then, they are dicks in my book and I'm probably better off in Hell with the rest of the entire population of the world since the beginning of time.

yes it IS the same thing. you're just more passive-agressive and subtle about how you bash their beliefs. the atheists are offended by getting bash, and thus they bash in return. they dont feel entitled, they do it becos they dont know what else to do. you're mixing this up... saying the atheists just randomly start bashing religion for no reason. they don't. your bullshit about being "compassionate" (aka, arrogant, self-righteous, dismissive, and condescending) was the first punch, and they're simply responding. maybe not particularly on HERE... but our culture is rife with this kind of "christian" behavior and so the anger spills onto the board directed against people like you, who act all holier than thou.

my beliefs are a lot like yours here. but not only do i not subscribe to a particular religion b/c they don't fit my beliefs, i also believe that religion has done way too much harm over the years. and on a grand scale. i don't want to be a part of that

why do athiests have so much anger toward those of religion?
I only have anger towards those who constantly make stupid blanket statements about us as though we are one homogenous group.
religious threads here turn into athiest trying to prove those of religion are wrong. why?
Some atheists tire of the smug superiority of some believers.
where does this anger come from.
The problem is not "anger." The problem is the insecurity of certain believers who think that anyone who doesn't believe the exact same thing is automatically "angry." Saying I don't believe in the bloody god on a stick is not anger, it's just a fact. I also don't believe in talking pink unicorns, but people who do don't tend to bring it up as often as Jesus-followers.
if you tell someone of religion that you are athiest; they feel sorry for you and maybe pray for you; which is an act of compassion to them.
Let's say you were perfectly content with your own life, and you told me who your wife was, and I said "ugh, I feel so sorry for you!" Then you told me where you went to college and I said "Oh dear, that's terrible, you poor thing." Then you told me where you worked and I wiped away a tear and said it made me heartsick. Then you told me where you lived and I said "Egads! Let me help you get the hell out of there!"

Would you think I was being compassionate and wonderful? Or would you want to tell me to STFU?

Then, when you said "STFU," I'd say, oh dearie me, why are religious people soooooooo angry?
yet athiests can't wait to jump on someone trying to prove they're wrong.
Maybe some can't. I don't need to prove others wrong, I know what I think about religion and I don't care if others want to believe. Some people get something they personally need out of religion. Unless you've agreed to debate with someone, trying to talk them out of their beliefs is as rude as telling a fat person they should eat less, or a smoker they should quit. I prefer to mind my own business when it comes to assessing other people's addictions, habits and beliefs.

    Unless they ask me.
they disrespect that person and thier beliefs. are these the attributes of a "good" person?
Religious people are no different when they tell non-believers how "wrong" they are and that they are going to hell.

religion supports the spread of athiesm and the coming of the antichrist. this will bring the end of times. they are praying for you because your views were predicted and you will bring the end of times. this is your mission. this is what religions look forward to.

Religion is looking forward to the END OF TIMES??? Doesn't the End of Times usher in death and destruction on a massive, worldwide scale?

Thanks. I got to thinking about it this week when a Jehovah witness showed up on my doorstep with her Watchtower and her bibble. Did I tell her she was wrong? No. Did I tell her I thought she'd been sucked into a dangerous cult? No. Did I tell her she was a loser wasting everyone's time? No.

All I said was a very polite "No thank you. I'm an atheist."

And from the look on her wrinkled face, you'd have thought I just told her I was in the final stages of cancer.

    That, my friends, IS OFFENSIVE.

We have some living down the street, and they host their little group gropes or whatever they call them, so they are always campaigning around my neighborhood.

The thing is, I wouldn't DREAM of going to their door or anyone else's and saying "There's no god, and I have a little magazine here about why that is, and I'd like to come into your house and talk you out of whatever it is you happen to believe and talk you into what I believe."

The death of millions of other humans? Forward to it? NO... I don't want millions of people to suffer and die so I could be saved. Even if i was 100% certain that I would be 'Saved'... I would STILL not want massive suffering and death of millions of humans and other living creatures. How is 'looking forward' to Death and Destruction good? You are looking forward to it because you believe you will be saved.... that is a selfish attitude and i would think... go against everything that God and Jesus represent.

I haven't read all the other answers, but mine is - I think you're making quite a lot of assumptions and generalizations. I'm kind of meh on religion personally. No anger. Whatever. If someone wants to pray for me its their business, doesn't hold any significance to me. The only thing I ask is keep it to yourself. They can do their thing and I'll do mine.
