I guess the word 'taught' can be taken as waiting for a lesson or led into a line of thinking that is biased or manufactured.

But if you changed the word to 'encouraged', which is how I took the quote, it makes a stronger point.

People are encouraged to follow, fit in, adapt to things that they view as wrong against their better judgement. If independent thinking was encouraged by everyone and valued by the masses I think we'd see a much stronger society. Not too mention how public schools basiclly discourage independent thought and individualism in place of teaching conformity and following cues and orders instead.

It's still a passive stance. People shouldn't need to be encouraged, taught, prodded, forced, etc. They should just DO.

Face it, we're not some microorganism in the ocean being pushed about by the currents and tides and waves. Some people think that they are, and then they become that.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.

So you don't think there should be any good or useful encouragement? I think our actions alongside our environment helps shape who we are.

"I remember the first time I saw someone
    lying on the cold street
I thought: I can't just walk past here
    this can't just be true
    but I learned by example
to just keep moving my feet
it's amazing the things that we all learn to do"

Nah - I didn't say there shouldn't be encouragement or that encouragement is a bad thing. I said people shouldn't NEED it in order to think for themselves.

    10. THE ART OF PEACE is medicine for a sick world. We want to cure the world of the sickness of violence, malcontent, and discord~this is the Way of Harmony. There is evil and disorder in the world because people have forgotten that all things emanate from ONE source. Return to that source and leave behind all self~centered thoughts, petty desires and anger. Those who are possessed by nothing possess everything.....

11.PRACTICE OF THE ART OF PEACE is an act of faith, a belief of ultimate power of nonviolence. It is faith in the power of purification and the faith of the power of life itself. It is not atype of riged discipline or empty ascetiscism. It is a path that follows natural principles, principles that must be applied to daily living. THE ART OF PEACE should be practiced from the time you rise to greet the morning to the time you retire at night...

Freedom is not merely the opportunity to do as one pleases; neither is it merely the opportunity to choose between set alternatives. Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate the available choices, to argue over them -- and then, the opportunity to choose.
