I think a candidate has the right to control the image he wants to present on tv for the most part. I can certainly understand why John McCain wouldn't want a group of 90 year olds behind him that would perpetuate the "too old" image he is already fighting so why can't Obama attempt to disconnect with the "he's a muslim" tag by not having muslims in the screen shot. Much ado about nothing I say.
Of course he has the right. however his choice has consequences and indicates where he truly stands, beyond the rhetoric.

Why is this shocking? and no it's not just a couple of volunteers. it's the whole Obama theme. Get away from anything Muslim.
Just look at his web site, links to CNN videos showing clips of how Obama is not a muslim. I mean how low is Obama that he goes through such extremes to show that he is a good christian and not and never has been a muslim.
For all the good he may or may not do once he is elected the first goal is to actually get elected. He is still a politician. He has already denounced his church and started wearing flag pins to increase his electablity so why does this surprise anyone?
But Muslim headscarves are not harmful to his campaign.
i'm not so sure i agree. They shouldn't be. But the "Obama is a secret muslim, Obama is loved by Hamas, Obama's middle name is Hussein, etc. line of attacks have been dogging his campaign since before the beginning. i'm not saying that i agree with the decision made by the volunteers, only that i understand how it would be a tough call and wouldn't want to make it. The political right would run with it regardless of what decision was made.

Because his whole campaign is based on not buying into the bullshit political machinations? Y'know... change we can believe in?
(Unless you're a Muslim, apparently. )

But like Abook said, anyone who's gonna believe he's a Muslim already believes he's a Muslim. He's fought that battle, and he's still fighting that battle, and he'll probably have to fight that battle until election day. But this just opens up a whole new avenue of "Obama as racist" headlines. Like you said, it probably seemed like a tough call on the spur of the moment - but I do believe this was the wrong call, on a PC basis AND a PR basis.

It doesn't surprise me at all!
I think it's cool how he's reaping what he sows. As it always is...
He can say what he wants, and attempt to "control" the desired image, and yet what is shines clearly for everyone to see! And to challenge him. As life does when we step out of line.
Granted, he'll continue on carefully constructing the imaginary image, and people will gobble it up. And still, I enjoy to see the balance of life at play!

No it doesn't. THIS choice paints him into a corner. There is no way out of this one. It makes it impossible to show where you truly stand.
If you think we are separate from life, maybe. I, however, see the whole of things. This situation with all the variables makes a clear statement for those who have eyes to see!

Believe me, the 3,000 posts I made in the Lisbon Treaty threads today has made me very much aware of that.
Okay, I'll rephrase it for you - for Obama's campaign - change and not allowing the Washington spin machine to continue - Muslim headscarves can't be allowed to damage his campaign. Otherwise, he's just buying into the whole system.

So if Louis Farrakan organized 1000 members of the Nation of Islam to arrive at an Obama rally early and take all the spots behind the stage so they would be on tv behind Obama you don't think he has the right to control that image because it's discrimating against Muslims? I'm sorry to break the news to you but he isn't above "playing politics" anymore than any other candidate that actually wants to win.
They should have just let it all be so that the issue will become an issue and people will at least have a chance at properly discussing/addressing it and un-glue their heads from their asses if it's ever going to happen.
I would think those that are voting for him would respect the decision.....but then again....factor in the severely tainted US MSM in this regard...and perhaps not.
This all might be giving too much credit to the situation. Racism abounds. Maybe just vote McCain and get it over with...

My personal opinion is that Obama is a pretty decent guy! And yet, power and ego (image) distort decency. He's playing the game. He's paying the price...before our eyes, ladies and gentlemen!

Pretty much a no win situation for Obama on this one. Refuse to seat the women behind the podium and look prejudicial. Seat the women behind the podium and see the photos scatter across the internet as proof that Obama is a radical muslim jihadist. Either way Unsung wets himself in euphoric anticipation of a ridiculous Obama smear pulled straight from the Sean Hannity show.
I think it might have been handled the best way possible. You know if scarfed Muslim women were seated directly behind Obama, the Republican Swift Boaters would have had a field day with the images--if done without a good preface. This, to me, is a good preface. The Obama campaign itself is off the hook for discriminating--which I honestly believe it doesn't want to do anyway--but the stupidity of the discrimination is what's getting outed. And it's getting outed by Obama's side, not the other side. So, Obama wins, Swift Boaters lose an opportunity.
I'm telling you, the more I see of the Obama tactics for handling dirty politics, the more I admire Obama and his ability to surround himself with smart people who are good at anticipating and defusing tricky situations. The women will still get in at some other opportunity, I hear, but the Swift Boatable moment is largely gone. The campaign gets to do what it knows is the right thing, with a slight pause, and the Swift Boaters get the boot. I gotta say it...pretty swift!
He's playing the game all right and he is winning.
Although that sounds good, the choices were slim to none, and the media helped shaped it according to the money game. Yet another sell out.
It's like winning a foot race against a guy with no legs, and high fiving people afterwards.

this is the sad part in all of this,... despite the claims of democracy in america, images and appearances dominate over ethics and ideals, and meanwhile the whole of civilization suffers.
we don’t know just where our bones will rest,
to dust i guess,
forgotten and absorbed into the earth below,..
The Obama campaign did not, moronic volunteers who think they are doing the right thing did.
The volunteers are the scapegoat. Do you really think there was no one from the campiagn that was supervising these people.

what is childish about unsung's post? For that matter, how is it an "attack"?
Thank you.
I wasn't the one who removed the people. But see I don't see the halo over Obama's head either so I take attacks when I post things that portray him as anything less.

Yes, it was very interesting how neutral you were in presenting what happened. Being called out for being "childish" or "attacking" was very ironic for me to read.

i agree it wasn't the best call. i still say i wouldn't want to be the one making it. i probably would have called it differently. i also don't think it was Obama making the call. i really doubt the volunteer seaters were given specific instructions as to "absolutely no headscarves". Personally i think the whole thing is silly, and i tend to think you exaggerate the "avenue of Obama is a racist" headlines. First of all it wouldn't be racism it would be religious intolerance. Secondly, i don't think this is major news outside of the blogosphere regardless. Had the decision been made to seat them, there would still be headlines. They would just be "Obama is a jihadist sympathizer" headlines. More silly season. No win situation.
As far as those who already believe he is a muslim, there are probably equally as many who are on the fence and well within the sphere of swiftboating propagandist influence. As you say, this is still a stupid battle that he, unfortunately, as a politician vying for the presidency has to fight.
"When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."
Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit on Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women's headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.
So what, I would have moved them out of camera view also. Really, wtf were they thinking? If they were true Obama supporters they wouldn't have wanted to sit there in the first place. They were probably paid or promised something if they could get those seats. They probably had something else plan during the course of Obama's speech.
Obama and his wife are operating under the constant threat of physical violence and the lowest form of person slim throwing. It would not be inconceivable that women dressed as muslims weren't hired to harm him, in fact, it would be the perfect scenario for a black, muslim to assassinate Obama. We've have the perfect reason to institute marital law in the major cities because of rioting. More importantly, we somehow tie Obama's death to Iranian funded terrorists and go to war with Iran.
Obama's campaign workers did the right thing.
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.

Paranoia will destroy ya. Take off the aluminum foil hat.
It is interesting that you support racial profiling.
First off, again, it can't be considerd RACIAL profiling. Religious profiling, perhaps, but not racial. Next, you know as well as i do that if the situation had been decided differently, you would have posted links to the photos and chastised Obama supporters as "aluminum hat wearing, kool-aid drinking sheeple" for supporting a candidate that so obviously shows preferential treatment to muslims. Just quit, already.

What would happen in another circumstance is independent of what has and is happening in this one.
Do you continue to stand by the religious profiling and prejudicial treatment?
