Muslims barred from picture at Obama event

Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit on Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women's headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.

The Obama campaign did not, moronic volunteers who think they are doing the right thing did.

Pretty much a no win situation for Obama on this one. Refuse to seat the women behind the podium and look prejudicial. Seat the women behind the podium and see the photos scatter across the internet as proof that Obama is a radical muslim jihadist. Either way Unsung wets himself in euphoric anticipation of a ridiculous Obama smear pulled straight from the Sean Hannity show.

    You are exactly right.
  • Why not just let them sit where they want as it's a free world, and argue reality on that premise?

Surely people have enough common sense to realize it's a multi cultural world. umn...scratch that... that's giving too much credit to a lot of people.

In any event, I will not be surprised if/when the same US foreign policy continues on after Bush.

Please tell me that was sarcastic. These people are volunteers who thought they were doing Obama a service, when in fact they proved why they just volunteers and not paid staffers.

yeah because "volunteers" show-up and figure the best course of assistance is to impliment racist seating policies upon their own volition....

You give volunteers the easy tasks. Passing out signs, seating, etc. These people took it too far and broke the cardinal rule of campaigning---don't make the candidate look stupid
  • everyone is entitled to form an opinion on this, and really who knows but the central figures in Barak's campaign,... but this is shady and sounds like these volunteers are the scape-goats of a bigotted campaign to maintain specific degrees of P.R. and here i thought Hillary Clinton was out of the race!

I was at the St Paul rally a few weeks ago and there were a couple of woman in headscarves that were standing near the front of the stage when they let everyone in. By the time Obama came on stage they were far in the back out of camera view. Were they asked to move? I don't know. I assumed they moved on their own but now I wonder.

I can't think of one campaign I have ever been on where a volunteer thinks they are campaign strategist and makes a boneheaded move like this. It happens all the time. This situation reeks of that being the case.

I'm kinda in the middle on this one... I would think something as politically important as who is in the background in camera range would be something too important to leave up to random volunteers, but who knows, they could have been doing the initial screening until the campaign officials got everyone situated.

But as mentioned before, it was a no win situation in this political climate... either discriminate against people based on their appearance, or become fodder for e-mails forwards and talk radio for being a jihad loving muslim.

Agreed. No matter what happened, he'd catch flack for this.

The way I see it, Obama's already dealing with the "He's a Muslim" e-mail and talk radio stuffs. This would just be more on that fire. But now he's got a whole new blaze a-burning.

How about keeping your integrity and not denying these women their seats based on their race OVER the risk of being made to look like 'jihad loving muslim' because the only people that buy into that kind of crap already have their minds made up and think that way anyway.

I think it is all controlled. In St Paul the arena was all filled in first come first served except the seats directly behind Obama which we taped off and filled in later. Then anyone near the stage was given a sign or a flag. I work near the arena and the day before the event people were making up a bunch of hand written signs like "Unify the Party" or "Women for Obama." Obama's camp is excellent at choreographing the image you see on tv. Much better than McCain who has been tweaking his speeches since day one.

americans are so funny... they want to focus on ANYTHING but the issues... especially now that race has come into the picture in a presidential election

Exactly. Honestly, to risk sounding like a roland style conspiracy theorist, i wouldn't be surprised if they weren't really muslims but thespian plants. Either way his detractors would have a line of attack. Unlikely, but possible. To be truthful, i wouldn't want to be a volunteer making that call. i agree with those that say sit them based on freedom's principle. For someone like Obama, however, given the history of attacks against him, this is a sticky situation and tough call. Rock and a hard place.

What if they were wearing "McCain '08" shirts? Would it have been ok to discriminate based on that and not let them be seated behind the stage?

I totally agree with you on what should have been done, and it's a shame that those types of thoughts (by whoever made that decision) even exists.

That comparison doesn't really work - that's not based on race. I wouldn't expect them to let KKK hoods into the picture, or anything else that could be deemed offensive, or harmful to his campaign. But Muslim headscarves are not harmful to his campaign.

We should focus on abortion and allowing gays the right to lose half their shit. Its way more important than racism.

I think a candidate has the right to control the image he wants to present on tv for the most part. I can certainly understand why John McCain wouldn't want a group of 90 year olds behind him that would perpetuate the "too old" image he is already fighting so why can't Obama attempt to disconnect with the "he's a muslim" tag by not having muslims in the screen shot. Much ado about nothing I say.
