    gerard didn't hear anna come in. but he heard her swear when she dropped one of the canvasses she was carrying. she went to help her.

    'god girl you should have called me, i would have come picked you up.'

    then he noticed her slightly frazzled state.

    'you okay anna? you want something to drink?'

    gerard took the canvasses and leant them against a wall.

    God it has been so long Anna. How are you? You've been trough such a great ordeal. How are you doing? You had me worried you know. Girl it has been so long I feel like hugging you, but it would probable be better for my no-claim health insurance if I didn't. Do you want something to drink?

    I was kinda surprised he actually stopped to let me answer the way he was raving on and on. Gérard always got nervous when I was around, I loved him for that even if he was a bit annoying.

    anna squeezed gerard especially tighter. she needed to hold onto something and gerard was it right now. when she let go she held him at arm's distance. ignoring all questions about her wellbeing.

    i must have got a wistful look on my face cause gerard sure got a sympathetic one on his.

    'well me, i will just bask in your reflected glory. you just have to be your usual sweet charming self. aside from that, those two pieces you just brought in need to be hung. you might want to take a look at the collection and see if it's okay.'

    i had trouble looking at my work sometimes. some pieces it was hard to believe that i came up with them. others it was obvious to me at least, that i wasn't in full control.
    as you walked into the gallery, davey's portrait greeted you. i really liked this one. it was like having him around even though he wsn't really. i hope he turns up. i owe him an apology.

    i found gerard in the kitchenette.

    hamish was helping davey load the catalogues for anna's show into davey's beaten up station wagon. he rested and picked one up. he flicked through it while davey continued loading.

    'you know some of these aren't bad. i see a lot of anger though.a lot of hurt. how did you live with this?'

    hamish could see he'd hit a nerve with davey. and not gotten anywhere with anna himself, hamish wanted to milk it for all it was worth. if he thought he could get away with asking how she was in bed, he would.

    hamish like to piss people off. he didn't always but lately he just couldn't be bothered being nice. he'd push anna if he thought he could put one over on her. he knew though that doing that would be biting off more than he could chew.
    hamish threw the catalogue back in the box and went and sat in the passenger's seat.

    Yes I regrettable did. It wasn't a pleasant conversation as you might imagine.
    Why not go to the beach? We could pick up a few bears and sit in the sand gazing away into the sea.

    davey hoped that he didn't sound too desparate. but right now, talking to hamish, he didn't really care.

    watch himself yeah right. those years with anna, he'd spent so much time watching her that he had just been along for the ride. but it was a thrilling ride for the most part. losing the baby hadn't been a barrel of laughs and he'd made mistakes there, but it's hard to regret things you've done when you've followed your heart. though perhaps hooking up with tanya had been about something other than his heart.

    'i'm talking with her hamish. it's not like i'm looking to get back together with her. so what happened with johnny?'
