Does everyone not realize he's not doing this video for fans, but strictly to create some buzz in hopes of winning some of the awards? This isn't the Pearl Jam we grew up with kiddos.....
And I'm not the kid I was 17 years ago...
Can't wait to see it
...London Doesn't Call Anymore... (rip joe)

Wow what a narrowminded view. This might be a part of it...but the awards they are striving for are more for the film than for Ed himself. I'm sure its coming out on DVD shortly after Oscar time, so they wanna create buzz to boost DVD sales. If it wins some awards in the meantime...great!...but I don't think thats the sole objective here.
I dunno about you but I think its high time Ed is recognized for his amazing songwriting.
ohh ya and this buzz here will translate in more interest in PJ's next album as NOW people will start to see in Ed what we've seen all along....BRILLIANCE!

I think, gee, perhaps, he wanted to make a vid for a song he's really proud of that's part of a movie and a story he really got into, could be!
Sounds like a cool vid...looking forward to seeing it.
And I'm def not the same kiddo I was in 1991..guaranteed...
Nothing divine dies. All good is eternally reproductive. The beauty of nature reforms itself in the mind, and not for barren contemplation, but for new creation. ~ Nature, Emerson
On the flip side, I am still ok with people not knowing about Pearl Jam still rocking it. Let them go to Matchbox 20 while we get the best seats to see PJ.

I'm just saying that I would have loved to have seen more videos from them over the years, but yet they hardly ever did any because of overexposure or hatred of media or whatever....and yet now it just seems like EV is making a video in hopes of increasing his chances of winning some award.
It's okay, It's okay
You don't have to run and hide away
It's okay, it's okay
I love you anyway

It's not as if 'Guaranteed' is going to become the next Jeremy or anything.

I'm cool with the video..and cool with Eddie getting props but there definetely has been a shift...seems like last album (producers) really pushed this....again this is not bad..and I'm glad. Go Eddie...you do fkn rock.
I'm pleased whenever the band or Ed in by himself gets credit for their inspirational work. I don't think the exposure of making the video is like "selling-out" or anything either - this isn't Aerosmith we are talking about. I don't think making a video to promote yourself for an award is ridiculous either... it is likely a promotion of the movie and McCandless anyway as opposed to Ed tooting his own horn. I'm excited to see it and it sounds like the director was the right guy for the job as well. This should be a nice addition to the catalogue...

So what if it is??? 15 years ago things were crazy...grungewear, retarded questions from the media like favourite food and shit u see in teeny bopper mags...awards shows telling the band they MUST play Jeremy. I think they just had enough of being controlled and hounded and the focus being on them as sex symbols and from Seattle moreso than their music.
I think their retreat from the media was necessary for the bands survival.
Now they are older and the grunge things is a thing of the past so the attention they seek, and will hopefully get, will be for their music and it will be a very different experience for them as they have the age and experience now to handle the attention.
I have no problem with them becoming more mainstream as long as the music itself doesn't suffer. I think if I hear a rap or hip hop song on a PJ album I'm gone! (unless its meant as a satire) haha.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here but, what about the video format being untrue to the music, or influencing personal interpretations of the song?
I seem to recall this being a stance at one time.

I see your point but I just happened to read an article on that Five Horizons website that interviewed Eddie Vedder back in the early 90s about videos.
"No, no. When you make videos, make a movie. MTV is a tremendous thing, a tremendous forum. You can make films for videos. That's what we try to do. I mean some people consider it instead of the best video of the year the best commercial for your CD, you know, we see it as art. We didn't want it to interfere with the music. The first two were just live with live sound, etc. The third one, I mean we tried to interpret a little bit and you see what happened. The problem is, if you recall, do you remember the first time you saw that video, do you still remember?.....cause after it was seen a hundred thousand times or even the normal viewer saw it a thousand times, it didn't mean anything anymore. "
So I don't think the band is against music videos entirely. Just if they get over exposed and over played to the point of saturation (if that's the right word?). I can't see 'Guaranteed' been a staple on MTV.
Or, more simply, maybe Vedder has become less cynical.

Into the Wild ran on limited release in theaters and let's face it...there are still people out there that haven't even heard of the movie or Eddie's soundtrack despite the high praise and critical acclaim. Pitchfork didn't even issue a review for Eddie's album.
I'm hopeing the video will draw some attention to both the album and film. Especially the film...as I feel that it was the best movie released this year.
