I think one of the reasons for their emergence and initial popularity was that they were a complete opposite to the shoe-gazing, "our fans are idiots" and "I don't want to be famous" attitudes of their Grunge counterparts, thus were a welcome change. Oasis wanted it all.

The main reason though, was that they had great songs. Live Forever, Slide Away, Cast No Shadow, Wonderwall, Whatever - to name but a few of their earlier work. Never mind the oft-quoted superior B Sides that they virtually threw away.

I will agree that their music has been in decline somewhat since Morning Glory but firmly believe they still add gems to an already stagnant music scene in this country. Some often judge them by their own earlier and higher standards and I would agree, using this yardstick, they fail to reach those vertigo-inducing heights.

However, they still deserve our attention and I for one, believe this new album to be somewhat of a resurgence.

Of course, saying Oasis are still pretty great would have been quicker...

    well said!!! i agree ;)

  • anything from definitely maybe (except digsey's diner, hate that song) or morning glory were Oasis at their peak. and those 2 albums produced some great b-sides, "talk tonight", "headshrinker" and "acquiesce" just to name a few.

i definitely agree that Oasis did decline after Be Here Now, but even though Standing on the Shoulder of Giants and Heathen Chemistry were not perfect, they really did have their moments of greatness. hearing that the new album is like a resurgence makes me even more excited for when i will see them live at the end of the month!

  • Cast No Shadow was good, I'll give you that.

    It was indeed very good.

In my humble opinion, possibly Liam's best vocal performance. The drumming triplets by Alan White are excellent too.

If you didn't know (I'm sure most of you do) it was about Richard Ashcroft of the now defunct Verve.

    Enjoy the gig.

Hopefully it won't go the way of previous US tours...

heh i actually like Digsy's Dinner alot...
i love Oasis's b sides..they are the only band whom i actually bothered collecting every single they put out (cept the OZ singles for Morning Glory and Champagne Supernova)
sadly i wasnt too impressed with the b-sides from Heathen Chemistry and Lyla

heh that was in the back of my mind as i was buying the tickets, and I have awesome seats!

I do hope they are past that, though even if Liam were to refuse to perform, i wouldn't mind hearing noel, he did a great job at the unplugged show...

I've been listening to the Go Let It Out single a lot lately.

First of all, the A Side was really underrated in my opinion, but how good were the B Sides?

Let's All Make Believe is astounding and Cigarettes In Hell is excellent too.

Many believe all the best B Sides to be around the Cigarettes & Alcohol to Don't Look Back In Anger period (from which Underneath the Sky was an underdog favourite of mine) and often overlook this little classic...

heh, sometimes digsy's doesn't bother me, but it's definitely not a favorite. little james is another one i'm not crazy about.

i bought all the singles when i went to london in 1997, happiest day of my life since i couldn't find them anywhere. i've stopped collecting after "Do you Know What I mean", i'm not that big of a B-side freak because with most bands they are just disappointing.

I'm having a really hard time getting the Lyla B-sides from my quasi-legal file sharing service of choice. The decline in quality in B-sides over the past 2 albums has been unfortunate. I do agree that "Let's All Make Believe" is a gem, and "Carry Us All" is sweet as well. But I'm still hoping for another "Whatever."

Did someone say earlier that "The Importance of Being Idle" is confirmed as the next single? Is that true for the US as well?

(finally, thanks to pushmepullme for the more insightful post explaining why he thinks Oasis are shit. it showed a much higher level of civility and discourse than we often see around here. kudos.)
It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

Yeah, it's there on iTunes, but only if I download the whole DBTT album, which I already own. Fuckers. I did get the Best Buy version with the 5-song live bonus disc though.

No problemo. I Noel is one of the more intelligent and funny 'rock stars' around.
    "I am a doughnut." (live - Berlin, Germany - 11/03/96)

"Behave like rock stars - not like the President." (live - Noblesville, IN - 8/17/98)

"Yeah, I was gonna learn to play it (Breath) but somebody slipped me a bottle of viagra and was busy doing something else six times last night" (live - New York, NY - 9/10/98)

  • Standing on the Shoulder of Giants is my favourite Oasis the first two albums are two poppy and the 3rd the songs are too long. SOTSOG is perfect for me, it's more rock n' roll than al the other albums.

yeh dun get why many hate this song and protest it being the next single.
i really love the lyrics to it and Part of the Queue
that line from TIOBI actually reminds me of the line in rock n roll star where Liam sings " Is it worth the aggravation
To find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for?"

the lyla bsides are okay, wont let you down is okay, and eyeball tickler is a pretty good rocking song.

i dont think many have mentioned the japanese bonus tracks. sitting here in silence (on my own) is a great song, and i can see it now is good as well.
i haven't heard them yet..waiting for them to appear on b-sides

  • streaming the album as I type, I love "turn up the sun", the snottiness is back :) definitely a better opener than "the hindu times" IMO.

mucky fingers is awesome too, love the sound of noels voice and that's as far as I got, heh, but so far not disappointed at all!

yeh Noel's vocals have really improved..noticed that...Turn Up the Son is a great opener..especially love the outro...intro does remind me of Travis alittle

i definitely noticed that too, Noel hasn't sounded so crisp since "talk tonight"...so far my favorite track is "the meaning of soul".

this album is by far an improvement, the songs are concise, not bloated or overproduced and overall, it's the probably the best Oasis album since WTSMG
