Tour kicks off tonight in Anaheim. Anybody heading to the show?
Me, I have to wait 'til they get to NYC/Philly...
I can't wait to see the setlist. It looks like they played a lot of songs off the new album during their 3 nights at 40 watt. Maybe just to practice, but who knows. Either way I love the new songs; I just hoep to get more than a couple of old songs when I see them.

I am also interested in the set list....to see if any off of ABAAC actually makes the cut....and to see what Shonna gets to play live.
I suspect that I have already seen five or six songs off of the new album live during the two fall dates that I caught.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

Two songs by Shonna.....very good....Shut Up and Get on the Plane....nice, very nice.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
I am probably in the minority here but i felt the new album could have benifited by trimming down the songs and picking maybe 12 or 13 of the best songs.
There aer probably about 7 or 8 songs i really love and another handful i thought were good. The others seem to get lost in the shuffle to me.
Those 7 or 8 i like i do enjoy a lot though.
Great looking setlist from the show mentioned. They are always good live.

I got there early, about 7:30 last night and grabbed a beer from the bar. Checked out the merch tables and walked around. I was alone (my wife decided she wouldn't enjoy it so much, but regretted not coming later) - if you saw a guy in a worn out Milwaukee Brewers hat with a beer and doing the white man bounce by himself, that was me.
The House of Blues is actually a neat little place to see a show. Obviously, I'd like to see the band play to bigger venues, but it was intimate and you didn't miss anything. My ears are still ringing this morning, as its been awhile since I've been that close to the front speakers. A friend tells me that this is the sound of my hearing fading away. Oh well.
There was this big guy, not dissimilar to Ethan Suplee, working the Felice Brothers merch tent. He seemed nice and was surrounded by a swarm of girls. But he suddenly disappeared only to reappear moments later on stage with an accordion. The guy to his left had a washboard and they were filled out by a bass, a guitar and a drum kit. The guy with the washboard occasionally put it down and picked up a violin.
These guys kicked some ass. They tore the roof down with some knee-stompin', beer-swaying bluegrass-rock. I picked up a couple of their CDs after the show and you can tell the guys are young: the production on the CDs leaves you wanting a little something, but their live act is a lot of fun. Highlights include their opening song Bring me an Angel and another song called The Devil is Real which featured just the drummer on vocals and the lead singer on guitar. Really good. And like DBT, they mix it up with the lead singers. Even the guy with the accordion sang a song - something about having whiskey with his whiskey. I was really impressed and am glad I picked up a CD or two.
The North Mississippi All-Stars are clearly expert musicians, very talented and very good. Singer has a good voice - I guess maybe they just aren't my thing. But man can the guy tear it up on guitar. They began with a song about shaking it and ended with a different song about shaking it. The best song was when their bassist stepped up to the mic and continued to rock the bass. Well done...
One more note on the Felice Brothers: Listening to their stuff on the way home, I was having trouble pinpointing them or comparing them to anyone, but here's my best go of it: A young Billy Joel + Bob Dylan + DBT = The Felice Brothers.
And there was some drama during the NMA set - your typical "girl thinks guy hit on her, boyfriend gets involved, guys talk it over and realize girl was just drunk, shake hands, etc. - then girl tries to make amends with the other guy and he wants no part, she gets upset and her boyfriend drags her off to cool down. It's a shame, but typical... there was also a guy who pissed the bartender off and was almost kicked out... and then really got kicked out when the bouncer saw him recording the show.
As for DBT, they didn't fail to deliver and played for a good two hours despite what looks like a shorter setlist (although maybe I'm forgetting something? Really didn't drink that much, so that's not why...). Patterson did say he had Laryngitis - or LarangEEtis, as he called it.
They are so fucking good, and with all do respect to Jason Isbell, John Neff and Spooner Oldham just add so much to the band. They opened up with Lookout Mountain and it was on - Ghost to Most, Home Front and Living Bubba also came early on in the set. I really should have written it down but A) I didn't want to be "that guy" and Then I couldn't hold my beer. By the way, I did see "that guy", so I know a setlist is floating around somewhere. Although he didn't seem to be having as much fun and may have in fact been a reviewer.
Lots of industry-types in the room, and a good share of older fans who were rocking out up front. I was able to stay within the front 4-5 standing rows of people all night, it was cool.
Cooley: What can I say. I made sure to stand on his side as its his stuff that I've been getting into more lately and he didn't disappoint. The man looks like the devil when he's up there playing with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, the lights flashing behind him and the smoke coming through. He fucking killed Women Without Whiskey. Made my night. "women without whiskey... whiskey's hard to beat!"
Three Dimes Down, Checkout time, and Shut up and get on the Plane were also highlights.
I may have a thing for Shonna now. I like her albums on the record but was STILL skeptical about what she would bring to the live show - she was great. "I'm sorry Houston" was wonderful and she rocked the bass all night. Not as big of a fan of Home Field Advantage, but it worked well live.
Patterson played his role of the proud papa and didn't let his illness effect his singing, although you could kind of tell it when he spoke between songs. Sinkhole was my favorite - they played this and Women Without Whiskey back-to-back and it was clearly my favorite sequence in the whole show.
The crowd was good, but these fucking L.A. crowds (I'm not a native, so I can say that) - the cheer for an encore was pathetic. I almost lost my voice chanting DBT but only one other guy near me picked up the chant. It took the guitar tech coming out to pump up the crowd, but even then it was pitiful. This may have been why they played a shorter encore (three songs), or maybe Patterson's voice was really giving out. I don't know.
But he killed Opening Act when he came back out - and Shonna's backing vocals on that track towards the end are stellar, although she got a bit lost in the mix at that part.
So many things, so many nuances, etc. I'll post as I remember them throughout the day. After many aborted attempts I am glad I finally got to see them, even if i was by myself - had a great time.
Wish I could see them tonight here in L.A. (I'm just in Glendale) but I have to work and should save the cash. Was hoping for an L.A. in-store somewhere but I haven't heard anything.
I don't have to work until 3 - I'll keep my ears open - ringing and all.
(And yes, David Barbe, Marc ford and Luther from NMA came out and jammed during Buttholeville)...
It's something I don't get - these guys are so fucking good - and yet its hard to convince people to go. I couldn't even get my wife to go.
So now I can say I went to a concert by myself, but god it was worth it...
I've been going to shows by myself for awhile. Mrs. Merkinball doesn't like to go to as many shows (and someone has to watch the kids), and I figure I can see 2x as many shows for the money.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
I'm laughing my butt off about the drama during the show. First DBT I went to was in a college town and some poor dude gave the date one beer too many. His dreams of romance were soon put to rest by the hurling chick fish flopping around the room.
Flash forward to this fall...I find myself singing a backrow duet with some very drunk guy on Zip City. Guy knew every word, never missed one and couldn't put together a coherent sentence.
No wonder I never miss these shows!
Nite to all!

Has anyone attended any shows on this tour? The last couple of nights' setlists look amazing. I can't wait until the Toronto show on Wednesday - I took off Thursday off work as well, and plan to drink my face off ; )
I was worried about seeing this band without Jason in the fold. Jason just brought so much as a great singer songwriter geetarplayer, that's not to say that pat and um cooley aren't a++, but to not hear those Jason songs with the dbt was gonna hurt...
Opening up with Living Bubba followed by Ghost To Most pretty much was a perfect start for obvious reasons. The best old and the best new. Smart.
Other tunes played...Uncle Frank which cooley just rawked the f out on ,and um 2 daughters&wife, 3 dimes down, daddy needs a drink, opening act, crystal meth(which i didnt like on the cd but live it was incredible), the standard closers with zip city(fan request) for the opening encore song
I was hoping Shonna would sing home field advantage cause that song flat out rawks but instead we got houston, which was ok. Nice to see her take front stage. She's great.
There's other songs and moments i'm forgetting but um oh well
Oh yeah...a HUGE shout out to The Whigs for being bigger than I thought they'd be and living up to(and exceeding!) the hype. I bought their new cd and they played most of the songs off it...fantastic arrangements...great songs that don't all sound the same...I cant guess their age from where i was at but they looked really young...already young indeed. I felt sorry for the people who decided to show up late and miss them.
The show was 10tickets from being sold out was the last word i heard. I would have preferred a venue change cause a crowded opera house sucks but regardless its still one of the best venues that toronto has, when not sold out.
Overall rating 9/10...$20...can ya really go wrong???

The Whigs opened? That's awesome. I saw them open for Yo La Tengo and My Morning Jacket at SXSW last week and thought they were phenomenal - definitely held their own against those other two bands, which is saying something, IMO.
I wish Shonna would do Purgatory Line - haven't heard that one yet.

Nice review ashtrayrock. I got there early and caught the Whigs, and although I though they started slow (thought the drummer was a little sluggish the first few songs) they ended great.
DBT were amazing. Their songs just come alive when hearing them live. Like ashtrayrock mentioned - even though I do like Crystal Meth on the cd it was great to hear it live.

No, decided not to make the monday night trek up to Anaheim. I'm regretting it already, it's been a year and a half since I've seen them last.
