At the end of a tribute concert featuring the music of Bruce Springsteen, the Boss himself joined in.
Bruce Springsteen fans have gotten used to radical makeovers of his songs over the years.
On tours without the E Street Band, he has often used fiddles, banjos and mandolins to send older, urban songs marching down a rural road.
But even those switches couldn't prepare fans for the wealth of informed re-thinks on Springsteen songs unveiled last night at a Carnegie Hall tribute show. For 2-1/2 hours, more than 20 different musicians reupholstered songs from the star's rich catalogue, in a show benefiting Music for Youth, which funds music lessons in city schools.
There were stars Patti Smith, Ronnie Spector and Steve Earle; cult artists ranging from M.Ward to Marah - plus, at the end, Bruce himself, who gleefully overhauled his own "Promised Land" and "Rosalita."
Though none of the artists, save The Hold Steady, went for the muscularity of full-tilt Bruce (they, with a rev-up of "Atlantic City"), nearly everyone found their own way into the songs.
Some did through their personas: Given the threat in his voice, Steve Earle has a firmer grip on the character in "Nebraska" than does its author. And Josh Ritter brought his own Midwest naivete to "The River."
Other stars used genre switchups for a twist. The North Mississippi Allstars turned "Spirit in the Night" into a sly blues, Odetta made "57 Channels" a poem and Juliana Hatfield coarsened "Cover Me" into a grunge ballad.
Pete Yorn stressed the desperation, over the release, of "Dancing in the Dark" and Patti Smith stripped "Because the Night" down to a piano ballad without losing any of its theatricality.
Of course, no one could upstage Bruce, with his Dylanesque "Promised Land" and a comically rustic "Rosalita." But everyone else paid his songs the highest compliment by proving them substantial enough to spin in so many worthy ways.

"While he's filming the final episodes of 'The Sopranos,' don't think Little Steven Van Zandt is tapping his well dry. The rocker hosts his own Sirius radio show -- 'Little Steven's Underground Garage' -- and is turning music mogul with his own Wicked Cool Records. And, of course, there's that gig he has in a little band called the E Street, of which he says he's waiting on a call from Bruce Springsteen at any moment.
"We gotta make a record, which could happen soon," he tells Spinner. "I don't have any reason to say this other than my own instinct, but I just get a vibe it's going to be sooner than later it. Once that's done, we're very fast. [Bruce] literally could call me today, we could have a new album out and be on the road within three months. We tend to get better as we get older -- maybe not better looking but better with the craft."
Meanwhile, Van Zandt is focused on expanding his own Wicked Cool Records, which launched officially in December of last year. "It's going to be pretty much the same thing we play in the radio show and have in the radio format," Van Zandt tells Spinner of the type of bands that Wicked Cool -- which scored a distribution deal with RED -- will be releasing. "We're going to keep an identity by staying with garage rock which is essentially traditional rock 'n' roll."
Among the early signees are the Chesterfield Kings, the Charms and the Cocktail Slippers. "When you see something on Wicked Cool, you're going to know it's rock 'n' roll, number one," he says. "Not indie rock, not heavy metal, not pop, not hip-hop. Number two, it's going to be very high quality 'cause we're not going to put out records with a bunch of filler. It's going to be old school in the sense of 10, 12 really good songs."

this is from the Bruce boards- i pulled it down and this was posted 2 weeks ago,..
Did anyone hear Stern during the 7 o'clock hour of the show when Artie and Gary were talking about their gig in New England for the Kraft family...Mr. Kraft is a huge Springsteen fan and so are Artie and Gary and they said Mr. Kraft told them Bruce is gonna tour this summer and probablly do Fenway and they can go to Kraft box. I would if Bruce came to Philly and played Citizen's Bank Park.
I know just another Bruce summer tour rumor but this sounds pretty good although they didn't go into too much detail
i have heard rumours of a JULY 2007 tour

Here's a little something to kick off the weekend: a sneak peek of Live in Dublin. NJN Public Television has hooked us up with a 30-second promo spot for this Sessions Band performance, which the channel debuts next week.
News from K2 (This guy is the shit, he scooped the Seeger sessions thing, who would've seen that coming without inside info?)
A quick update along with some good news and bad news. The good news from the studio is that a number of new songs have been completed for the new CD/Album. All of the songs were initially recorded solo with different members from the ESB making studio appearances to lay down certain tracks. As a result, different versions of SOME of the songs have been completed. Some of the songs with members of the band are true rockers while others, to include the ones recorded solo or with Bruce playing different instruments, mirror some of the slower songs from The Rising. All-in-all the next month or so will focus on the selection of "the right" version of the songs to be included on the album. Although not all the members of the ESB will have participated in the recording of this album, as of this date, a number of songs on this upcoming CD/Album lend themselves to the inclusion of the full band. Like other recording sessions and with increasing frequency, Bruce is recording a number of these songs playing all of the instruments. Technology, confidence in playing a variety of instruments, and a home studio have had a significant on recording overall and this CD/Album in particular. With the business side of finalizing the album to take the next couple of months (photography, production, distribution schedule etc.) look for the release to happen not until September since July is usually the vacation month. At this time, the recording has been given a project name, but the title of the CD/Album has yet to be decided. Now the bad news, with the pace of the recording, the tour will take place. At this time the month of September is shaping up as the rehearsal month with October being the tentative start date. Also, there are lots of discussion about the tour opening in Europe, but that is tentative at this time. Bottom line is that a new album and tour, as of right now, will most likely be here before the leaves fall.
Also, with the release of the new DVD and the slotted release of this new CD/Album, the other projects pertaining to older material have been put on the back burner.
