gift article.....What Kamala Harris did – and didn’t do – on immigration and the border
By Toluse Olorunnipa and Maria Sacchetti
August 17, 2024 at 8:00 ET
Two months into his presidency, Joe Biden confronted a political crisis: The number of migrants illegally crossing the southern border into the United States was soaring. So he asked Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the administration’s diplomatic efforts to reduce problems at the border.
That assignment included working with three Central American countries — El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras — to improve living conditions and lower the odds that migrants would leave those countries for reasons including poverty, gang violence and corruption.
But Republicans quickly seized on the apparent diplomatic opportunity for Harris, referring to her as the country’s “border czar” responsible for all issues related to the U.S.-Mexico line. Now, more than three years later, her role is a potential political liability as she runs for president as the Democratic nominee and polls show voters broadly disapprove of the Biden administration’s handling of the border.
Harris, in fact, has never been in charge of the border. The Department of Homeland Security manages migration. Her immigration role for the Biden administration has included boosting U.S. aid to Central America, traveling to the region and discouraging potential migrants from making the dangerous journey to the United States.
Migration from the three Central American countries during the Biden administration has fallen 35 percent, from about 683,890 to 447,270 in 2023, lower than it was in 2019 under Trump. But analysts say it is difficult to tie the reduction in numbers to Harris’s efforts, and there have been increases in migration from other countries.continues....

The inflation rate is right now similar to where it was during the Trump administration. If, like the other magas in here, you want to see inflation rate decrease and you yearn for the days of 2020 and 2009....well, ask yourself what was happening in the world during those timeframes.
The result of the global pandemic caused inflation to spike all across the world. Do you think the Italians wake up every day and blame Joe Biden for the higher cost of shit in their country? As the second chart points out, the US has handled the the inflation issue better than any other country in the world.....but imposing tariffs on all imports while deporting millions of people, like Trump has said he wants to do, will most likely cause inflation to start spiking again. How has the United states faired verses the rest of the world regarding fighting inflation?
Do you think the rest of the world blames Biden/Harris for their inflation too...or do you think they acknowledge that there was some kind of global event a few years ago the kickstarted the issue all around the world?
Do you think you'd garner more respect here if your arguments were not lathered up in disingenuous bullshit?

https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/trump-win-economists-see-revived-inflation-more-wary-fed-2024-07-25/Milton Friedman: It is always and everywhere, a monetary phenomenon. It's always and everywhere, a result of too much money, of a more rapid increase in the quantity of money than an output. Moreover, in the modern era, the important next step is to recognize that today, governments control the quantity of money. So that as a result, inflation in the United States is made in Washington and nowhere else.
Friedman: If you listen to people in Washington and talk, they will tell you that inflation is produced by greedy businessmen or it's produced by grasping unions or it's produced by spendthrift consumers, or maybe, it's those terrible Arab Sheikhs who are producing it. Now, of course, businessmen are greedy. Who of us isn't? Trade unions are grasping. Who of us isn't? And there's no doubt that the consumer is a spendthrift. At least every man knows that about his wife.
Friedman: But none of them produce inflation for the very simple reason that neither the businessman, nor the trade union, nor the housewife has a printing press in their basement on which they can turn out those green pieces of paper we call money.

2. country is much better off. No active US involvement in foreign conflicts. Stock market up to record highs. Covid appears to be a thing of the past. Unemployment below 5% still. Supply chain fixed, highway and bridge collapses addressed and effects mitigated. Competent cabinet officers getting things done. Tax receipts up. Strategic oil release and resupply profitable for the treasury. Most diverse administration and court appointments in history. Blue states doing well in many indicators, red states dragging us down but POTUS can’t fix stupid.
3. crowded field with a broad range of diverse candidates and $$$$$.
4. A ticket, a pair of candidates are voted upon after the primaries and the POTUS candidate selects their running mate. 80 million + Americans have already voted for her and given the choice between an old decrepit, deranged and delusional candidate and a normal person, Dems are enthusiastic about electing the first woman POTUS as they were electing the first black man POTUS, and a normal person over a complete fucking weirdo. Things about Dems is that they don’t goose step.

Inflation rate was over 9% a couple years ago. It is below 3% now. The Inflation Reduction Act was enacted two years ago.

Sure no problem. Overall, I do think American is doing very well (TBH, its always been and still is Great, well economically and as a place to live and work) and I think staying the current course is the best plan of action. 4 years ago we were in the throughs of covid, we were struggling as a nation and economy and the Biden Harris admin has pulled us out of it, so much so we are thriving economically with Joblessness at 30 year lows and a stock market higher than ever (which means 401ks and retirement plans are flourishing). Granted the admin's stimulus packages have contributed to the inflation rate, but it was bound to happen because of the covid downturns of production and increased demand for goods. The trade offs of not doing stimulus would be slower economic recovery if not for the stimulus. As of now, inflation seems to be easing.
Statistically with Democratic presidents, the economy performs better. Their economic policies encourage faith in the markets and promote growth. Looking back at the past 30 years, the economy and employment has grown under democratic executive leadership and shrunk under republican leadership. That currently seems to be the case so I am fine staying the course. I see Harris as a continuation of Biden Admin policies. As I said a few posts up, I think the promotion of housing supply is a much needed policy. I'm iffy on the assistance aspect, but I could be won over, but also, its not that big of a deal to me because I own a home. I feel like the foreign policy of this admin has been successful and would like to see a continuation of it.
As for her finishing "basically last" in the primary (she dropped out before before the primaries), well, there were other candidates that people preferred, but overwhelmingly people preferred Biden. Someones gotta be in last. This is not a ding on her record as prosecutor, DA or senator. People wanted someone who was second in command before to be in command and that was Biden. And to your question about her being the nominee without input from the American people, well, 1. She is VP, she is second in line to the presidency right now. People voter Biden and Her to those roles. So technically she was chosen by Democratic voters. If something were to happen to Biden she would be come president. Would you say the public needs input at that point as well? and 2. I think the polling and the support certainly indicate people are more than fine with her being the nominee.
While I don't think these were good faith questions, I hope I answered them satisfactorily (it is Saturday after all) in a way that is in good faith.
