Building on that point...Who You Are was a single from No Code and I remember people freaking out about it, "that's it, I'm done with Pearl Jam".  What a classic that album has become, though.

Same with Nothing as it Seems, that was received a little strangely.  So, they sort of have a history of releasing some of the outliers rather than the anthems.

I would kill for a song on this album that sounded anything like Nothing as it seems! The last 2 are the opposite of what I hoped for. Not that its bad cause its not. Was just hoping for rock, not dad rock.

I think they have touched on sounds like that since Binaural, though, as Pendulum comes to mind.  You Are is sort of a predecessor of Dance of the Clairvoyants, too.  (And Dark Matter, for that Matter)

But again, Binaural is 24 years old, so its had time to find its place in the catalog.  We were all different people back then, so those sounds meant different things at different points of our life too.   But again, some of these new ones have not had time to find their place, and I think they are getting some of them out in the open.

Ran the snippet a few times, and while I don't usually like this style of rock, I do find it catchy.  The guitar riff + Eddie's vocals are pretty cool.  I think the full song will be nice, and it sits well as track #3 after the first 2 thumping rockers.

Ed may be the king of dad rock now with the overly sappy lyrics and the unnecessary dropping of the the f word to prove he is still "badass".

Thin Air is brilliant.  They should let Stone write more love songs.

If Ten is 10/10 and The Haves is the WORST thing they ever did then Dark Matter is slightly better than most of Earthling. Ed sounds bad and the music is heartland/dad rock. Scared of Fear is great though.

Interesting post from Steven Hyden, referencing Waiting For Stevie

I’m guessing that is Waiting for Stevie. I think it would have been disastrous for them to release an “anthemic early 90s sound” as the lead single when the rest of the album was not that same “sound”. Now we get to hear more of where the band is at and then hopefully a throwback treat in WFS, that will hopefully lead to more of the same.

I think they are getting their "you didnt expect these" sounds of the the way.  The last 2 songs probably would sound a bit stark within the concept of the album.  By releasing those early, you expect them, and it’s less of a transition, maybe.  Just thoughts.
    Agreed

Giving me vibes of a cross between a Backspacer (vocals) and LB (music) tune. Unfortunately, not a mix I'm excited for.

Couldn’t disagree more. I hear zero LB and yes, that’s a good thing. Dark Matter (song) is a brand new sound if you ask me. No analog for it.

Running seems an improvement on past attempts at punk (MYM, Supersonic, etc).

The clips of SS and Wreckage sound more like earthling than anything else, but we have a limited window, so I’d bet there is more heft there with the full band .

I think the best tracks are ones we haven’t gotten a taste of yet based on reviews.

I think it's the "hold onto the wreckage" from the back door clips.

Between SS and Wreckage - sounds like they explored their pop country phase!

Not mad at it - digging the 2 singles and the snippets of these two.
