But 30,000 ft view, it also takes time to clean up after a disaster of this magnitude. Especially in the more rural areas. Plus people are trying to deal with (what’s left of) FEMA, insurance companies, local governance. As hard and as frustrating as it is, it takes time.

But that’s the beauty and detriment of social media. Some asshole like that Twitter account (I saw it on Bluesky as well, so it’s a coordinated shitpost) can do a drive by post, lobbing some meat to the wolves, and then be on their way to stir up shit elsewhere.

There’s a reasoned and well executed ‘hey here’s an issue that needs to be dealt with’ way posting. That ain’t it.

For context, this is that comment

” Can anyone explain to me why democrats are flying to other countries to help illegal immigrant criminals…
…but none of them came here, to Western North Carolina, to help their fellow Americans?”

Most of that sentiment is justified. But the faithful will never believe it’s their own damn fault. Based on the huge AOC Bernie rallies, the dems have opinions that are lost on most voters…

I’m curious where you get your information. Your perceptions of political trends and voter responsiveness seems off.

30 thousand of 75 million democratic voters show up for a Bernie AOC rally.

Do you think a Puerto Rican who grew up in the nyc metro is going to sound like a white Canadian?

I guess I don't know the purpose it serves.

Is it too much to talk the way you normally would?

Who says it’s not how she normally talks? Code switching is a thing, but I don’t know how many white North Americans see the cultural aspects of it.

They've had very successful rallies and are excellent ambassadors for the Democratic party. AOC raised $9M+. I know Bernie is too old for another POTUS run, but I'm glad he's stayed engaged. Of course, lots of people are interested in AOC future plans.

I mentioned to my wife the Faux News GIANT LETTER hyperbolic headline,

Social media erupts after AOC debuts another 'strange' accent at rally: 'Kamala’s playbook'

and she replied, "Oh well, if she really did that, it wouldn't surprise me at all.  When I go back to Texas to visit relatives, in five minutes I sound more Texan than a Texan."
I know what she means.  Years ago, I went back to Tennessee to visit a friend, and in no time a word like "dog" became "daaawwwog".  It's uncanny, but it happens.

And besides, what a stupid-ass thing for MAGAs to bitch about.  Fer cryin' aaout laaoud, citizens!

Yes it is. I designed an anthropological linguistics class for my department and the students have to write a paper on their own experiences with code switching. We all do it - whether we are conscious of it or not.

I not maga nor a republican or complaining about it. Just a comment and curiosity of why people may do it.

But the example was given on going back to where you're from and talking like you did in the past. This was in Idaho apparently. I have no knowledge of AOC's residence history, so I don't know if she was channeling her Idahoan past.

I just find it odd for campaigning/fundraising purposes.

That is very interesting. I'll have to read up on the subject for sure. Thank you!

Sorry if what I said gave the impression that I was saying you are MAGA.  Not at all!

I've been to Idaho and honestly, I don't know what an Idaho accent sounds like.  Large numbers of California MAGA, as well as some California old fashioned Republicans and even some moderates and liberals have moved to Idaho.  I hear about it here all the time.  So, perhaps the typical Idahoan sounds like...  me?  :gasp!:

But you are also assuming it actually happened and the sourced reporting it are passing it along in bad faith.

It’s entirely possible she was speaking as she always does and the PA, or microphone, or the wind carried the sound in a way that sounded like she was speaking differently.

I pulled up a clip on Twitter, and she sounded like she always does.

You're correct. Some or all that you listed is entirely possible and would affect the way she sounded.

Yeah, that’s sounds like her real voice.

Other than the “stock market too…” bit. But I’m guessing she thought the line was supposed to keep going and had to hard pivot stop because it was an audience response line.

There’s some real grasping at straws for her changing her accent.
