The Last “Dance” ESPN Documentary

Are you watching the documentary and what do you think so far?  I grew up watching the Bulls and Michael Jordan, but am realizing how much I did not know.
I wish I was a sacrifice, but somehow still lived on.

I put this in the Last Dance thread on the porch.. but I’ll add it here too.

Guess which of the names on the hotel room list is Dennis Rodman’s alias.

Shit I tried to make sure there wasn’t already a thread on this.  My bad.

I guess I will say, I forgot about Pippen’s feud against Krause.  Also the team that rolled into the 1986 Celtics, where Jordan scored 63 in game 2 was only 30-52!
I wish I was a sacrifice, but somehow still lived on.

I was 10 years old when the Bulls won their first championship. Lived about 30 minutes from the loop in Chicago on Indiana side.  Listened to games on the radio when not on tv or past my bedtime and I was supposed to be sleeping.  Listened only to sports radio until I was 16 and discovered Pearl Jam.

Like you I am surprised how much I forgot.  I am sure we knew all of this stuff at the time but yeah I totally forgot about how they were broken up, Pippen’s injury and trade request, etc...

I'll be watching this... Been waiting awhile for this to finally see some light. That was my era of growing up, Jordan took over the world and the Bulls were just beast on the court. Looking forward to it......

I don't follow basketball at all, but c'mon...that doc looks like a must-watch for me.

Hopefully ESPN will be rerunning or on-demanding it.

Watched the first episode and half of the second.... interesting to see the early stuff.  As many have shared, this was a peak time for NBA and we paid close attention, but I watched sporadically the first few years in the league so that is the stuff I found the most interesting this far.

I was really interested in Pippen's story.  Like I said earlier, I didn't know things were so contentious between him and Krause.  I vaguely remember him wanting a trade in 1997, but honestly did not remember why.  Cannot believe he was the 122nd highest paid player, for someone I think had been named to the NBA's top-50 all time team before this.

The biggest winner of this doc will be Carol Baskin, as Jerry Krause will take her spot as most loathsome documentary subject of 2020.

Pretty messed up how much footage they already showed of him being openly mocked.

It still blows my mind that they went into that season knowing it would be their last.  You have one of the best coaches of all time and you announce that it's his last year just because the GM had a big ego and craved praise....crazy.

A lot of why Pippen was making as "little" as he getting was his own fault.  Reinsdorf even advised him against signing the contract in 1991.  I thought it was unprofessional the way he treated Krause (Jordan too).  Both sides looked petty on this.

So far, it's good. I don't know if it's because there's nothing else to watch. One thing negative for me.. I don't like the way it jumps around. It was like listening to that one friend who tells you something and backfills you after every sentence. Like Michael Peña in Ant Man. We all have one.

Not to mention the team knew there was a chance of being dismantled in addition to the coaching change.  They had some aging players, but they were still head and shoulders above every other team in the league.  What a great time to be a Bulls fan (and sports fan in general).  This doc is so well done.

The late 90's were kind of a blur to me in general as I was mostly blacked out in college during this time, so this is a great refresher. I had forgotten a lot this as well. Total forgot Pippen missed the first couple months actually.

I've been playing that Alan Parson's song whenever I've entered a room so far today. The wife is none too pleased.

And now to think....what if? What if he didn't retire for those 2 seasons? What if they wouldn't have been dismantled? Surely they would have won more rings, but how many more?

I didn’t either until recently.  I always thought it was just the intro to Eye In The Sky.

I've often wondered this myself as a Houston Rockets fan--and that back to back was fun as hell to watch. I think Houston would've won on title & Chicago the other. Too bad that we'll never know---and I think those Finals would have been great to watch.

And what if he only played a year or two of college instead of three.

Everyone loves Lebron's counting stats, but MJ really missed out on 4-5 years worth of basketball..

Yeah a Rockets / Bulls Finals would've been great

I love that Jordan says that "there is no Michael Jordan without Scottie Pippen".

The one person I molded my basketball game after was Scottie Pippen.  He seemed to do everything right.  He was so fun to watch and I hated the Bulls, lol!

Same. I was nicknamed “Pistol Pip” by my high school coach for my love of Pippen and my vague resemblance at the time to a young Pete Maravich.

I use to be the "White Ice". It sucked that I was only 6' and not 6' 7.  I ONLY had game in the neighborhood.

I enjoyed the first 2 episodes. I forgot Pippen was drafted by the Sonics.

Something interesting I stumbled upon today.  The Trail Blazers passed on Jordan (Sam Bowie) in 1984.  Did you know the Bulls passed on Clyde Drexler one pick before the Blazers in 1983?  Imagine what if Chicago had drafted Clyde The Glide?  It was mentioned the reason why Portland passed on MJ, was because they already had a player like him.
