An unintended consequence of Gov DeWine push to talk Coronavirus and prepare prepare prepare has been the complete and utter lack of care for individuals in need of medical attention right now for things other than coronavirus.
My mother fell and broke her leg last week. She was in hospital, but they decided not to do surgery right away and get her out cause of coronavirus. A little premature in reality. Well, they moved her to a "rehab" facility. Only, since they are clearing wings of the hospital many people are being moved, including the mentally ill. She is basically in an insane asylum that is on lockdown with no guests. She has had 2 different men enter her room a total of 5 times. The one was incoherent. Took the staff 22 minutes to come to her room. The second man was screaming at her to get out of his house and where was his wife. 3 times in one night with that fellow. Staff not responding fast nor really fixing the problem. These are staff that are not prepared to deal with the psych ward patients. But, they aren't even meeting the base expectation of keeping people safe. There is some more, and she has only been there less than a week.
I wish we could actually balance our approach appropriately. Ignoring it does't work. Neglecting care for those that need it to prepare for something that isn;t there yet doesn;t work either. Not allowing visitors allows these facilities to get away with not providing basic needs. I have no idea what to do.
So yeah, fuck the chinese government and fuck Trump for downplaying and fuck all those that dramatize it for 24 hour news coverage while we as a society continue to fuck over others that actually need our help today, this very instance.
I'm really sorry to hear this Cincy. I hope your mother heals quickly and well and gets moved to a better place. Good thought going out for her and you.

You don’t have to trust China’s numbers to know that they had no where near 20 million deaths. You can trust, mistrust or completely disregard - it makes no difference. Why? Simple logic. We have ample information from every other country in the world that is dealing with this, and even those who have done a piss-poor job have no where near those death rates. Will the rates get to that eventually? Maybe, especially if we never get a vaccine or good treatments, but there is essentially zero chance that China has that many deaths in three or four months. It is almost certain they didn’t even have anywhere near one million. So you’re going to have to look else where for the reasons for those cell phone numbers, and that comes back to the economy.

I wonder how cell phone plans work in China. If they have a high percentage of prepaid, burner style usage, 20 million fewer users in an economic downturn doesn't sound outrageous. I just did the math, and (assuming I did the math right, and that's one big ass) that's .0125% of the 1.6 billion cell phone users in China. Even without a "high" % of prepaid users that doesn't sound crazy.

Yeah, even China couldn't hide 20 million dead bodies. Satellites would pick up the activity of storing, transporting, and disposal of even a fraction of that.
My first impression on the cell phones (if accurate) wasn’t that 20 million died, but the China destroyed/disabled them to prevent the spread of information. I don’t see it being unfathomable that 20 million were infected and 300k died or something.

China has more cell phones than it has people. 20 million is a drop in the bucket. Unlikely that this is the explanation.

Part of the drop could be caused by migrant workers -- who often have one subscription for where they work and another for their home region -- canceling their work-region account after the virus prevented them from returning to work after the Lunar New Year holidays that began in late January, said Chris Lane, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co.
/.../
While the drop in users is unusual, the total is small relative to total wireless subscriptions which have risen to a combined 1.6 billion for the three carriers.

Apparently most people have at least two phones, personal and work, and many have even more. There are also many that aren’t even legit accounts but more for bots and other forms of influence.

I ask everyone here and please kinow I hate the way China conducts itself on the world stage ,but looking at the numbers that could happen here 100k dead would everyone here oppose such measures if we were told only 20k would perish from this..im not sure were I fall on this

I figured most people would have 2 phones.
Just something I wanted to point out. It by no way means that all these people perished. It is something that could be correlated with it though.
The satellite theory from Rgambs is an interesting thought too.

2 questions for anyone here who may know the answers.
1.
Can N95 masks be re-used? I have two leftover from a household
project. Only needed use would be as my wife or I go to the store. I
assume letting it sit in the garage after use for a number of days
before next use would be acceptable practice.
2.
Does anyone know where surgical (non N95) masks can be purchased these
days from a reputable source? Everything on Amazon seems to be
potentially bogus. Maybe these are impossible to get at the moment.
I'm not sure.

Hey - while normally no on reuse, they are relaxing the guidelines. So, in reality, if you can breath through it ok and it is not contaminated on the mouth side at all, yes you can reuse during these times. If it becomes hard to breath, then it's too "clogged" and should be thrown away.
Surgical masks - you are doing just as well making your own fabric mask if you can. Nothing special about those surgical masks. The ones used in hospitals are special, they are N95 and have certain fluid resistance as well. I do not know where to get them at this time.
^ Thanks for the response. I'll re-use the N95 until it clogs. Time frame for usage should be no more than 30 minutes at a time, so hopefully they last a while. I'll also probably just cut up some old cotton t-shirts to make a makeshift mask. I don't know what else to do.
You know why I am mad? My friend's fiance just gave birth to their first child and she is so isolated because we are not allowed out of our homes. She would love to go to mother's groups and get support from new mothers and do baby yoga and go for a walk with a pram. But she's seriously stressed and isolated. She's on her own with her baby. She reached out on Facebook asking if anyone has baby paracetamol as her baby is unwell and none is available at her local pharmacies because greedy idiots stockpiled. All this because China did not alert the world.
Everyone is pissed and is making sacrifices to some degree.
We dont need to invent something to levy blame on. Things arent always so easy and black and white... even though the human mind seeks that clarity. At some point, when this is over, the international committee will figure it out and hopefully work together to prevent this from happening again.
Everything I have read from reputable sources says that there is no way this virus is man-made.
If not man made, then why does the CCP continue to allow the sale and consumption of animals know to carry the virus? Why does the CCP allow unhygienic wet markets to exist? The CCP needs to change its behaviour to prevent this happening again. SARS, swine flu, MERS, Covid-19, all from China thanks to the CCP.
Good question: why don't rural areas in a developing economy have widespread access to modern refrigeration and established food distribution channels?
Could it be due to decades of protectionist and isolationist foreign policy?
Will continuing these policies lead to more or less pandemic outbreaks?

Thousands, actually. As many as 50,000! I think normal life uses 3-5k. To type, they use a system called pinyin, where they spell the words out on a keyboard in an alphabet like ours, and the computer or phone converts it to the appropriate character.

I'm ok with this. Pence's take on this was done with tact at least.
It may be a CYA but I'll take it for what it's worth.
God bless the folks on the front line of all this. Not just medical professionals (though mainly them), but people stuck working at grocery stores, gas stations, etc.
Just when I think he can't go any lower he does. President Trump is such a POS: “For whatever reason, New York got off to a very late start and you see what happens when you get off to a late start," Trump said during his daily White House news conference. "New Jersey got off to — and I think both governors are doing an excellent job now but they got off to a very late start.”
A spokesman for New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy responded Tuesday night by saying the New Jersey governor “was far ahead of the federal government in responding swiftly and decisively to the spread of COVID-19."
“If anything, the federal government has been following his lead,” Mahen Gunaratna, Murphy’s communications director, said in a statement to NJ Advance Media.
And Cuomo’s communications director, Dani Lever, responded to Trump’s comments by saying: “This is not the time to debate, but the states were not slow to respond — the federal government was absent.”
