why does Pearl Jam hate me? they wait for me to leave the southeast to play there, and now that i'm in Texas they won't play here either. I'm gonna move to Seattle so they will stop playing there.

Dude, I have the same problem. So when I lived in the Southeast, I flew to Vegas and the Gorge. Now I'm in Texas, so I'm flying back east. You know that saying about Mohammed and the mountain? Gotta get yer ass on a plane.... :)

If you had Fran's and liked that you are going to be real happy here. Try Hut's or Hills for a real hamburger.

Because Austin is fucking awesome, full of hippies and artists and musicians and freaks and the laissez faire attitude that tends to accompany such folks.

You can still find live music any night of the week. You can get great barbecue or Tex-Mex or burgers (Fran's? wtf is that? Go to Hut's).

In the spring, you can sit out on the patio at El Arroyo with a plate of enchiladas and a Dos Equis.

Barton Springs. Lake Travis. Happy Minutes at Texas Showdown ... until they close it down.

Fran's is supposed to be the best kept secret in Austin - at least that's what I read?! I don't think it's much of a secret though, on the day I was there it was packed. Best greasy burger I've ever had but I've never tried Hut's - thanks for the tip! Haven't tried Hills either - thanks Ledbetterdays...

Seriously. Go to Hut's. I don't even LIKE hamburgers and I used to eat at Hut's about once a week.

Little further than I'd like to drive, but if they played Dallas, OKC and a few other cities up the road, it'd definitely be time for a road trip! I've always flown to see them except '03 when they played in Florida and '04 when they did Vote for Change in Kissimmee, FL - I was living in Florida at the time. I think that'd be the ultimate though, being able to drive from city to city on about a 6 city sprint. If I was still living in FL, I'd do it. But as I've said earlier, I love Austin and am not very fond of Florida - even though I'm a native. :)

As noted above, travel down to Big Bend and the Chisos Mountains. You get up around 8,000 feet. It's not the Cascades, but it's worth checking out. I've yet to make it down there, but it is on my list of places to go backpacking.

It amazes me how many Texans have never been to the Big Bend region of their own state! It's so beautiful. I was born in Alpine, TX and several generations of family ranched in that country for years, so it is near and dear to my heart. Ought to check out the Marfa Lights, too, if you're in that neck of the woods.

I have some advice, though. Keep the gas tank filled up and plan on driving a long way to get from point A to point B. It's big out there.

Now quit procrastinating and get your back-pack ready.

As for Pearl Jam, I wish they'd throw us a freakin' bone already.
