Why does Pearl Jam hate Texas?

Pearl Jam hasn't played a show in Texas in 5 years this June. Many of us are starting to wonder why? Texas is home to 3 of the largest cities in the US (Houston, Dallas and San Antonio) so there is plenty of opportunity to sell tickets. Texas has a rich and diverse culture and they seem to like that kind of stuff. Plenty of outdoor activities from camping to hiking to the beach to mountains. The weather is nice in the winter. More people move to Texas than any other state in the country.

But after thinking about it, I've decided that we have plenty of things that may not appeal to Eddie Vedder and his band of merry musicians. In fact, I can name several.

I'll start with some. Feel free to add your own. Maybe we can get to the bottom of why Pearl Jam hate Texas.

1. Too many George Bush Expressways, Tollways, or Highways
2. George Bush International Airport
3. It is hot - real hot
4. Jerry Jones
5. Almost zero public transportation options
6. Lack of environmental laws - air pollution is good for you and the economy
7. If you steal a loaf of bread, we are executing you
8. We killed JFK - and yes, we have his brain
9. Snobby, stuck up Dallas women
10. W just bought a home in Dallas
11. No bike paths
12. We all carry guns
13. Matthew McConaughey – we are really, really sorry about that one though
14. 4 out of the Top 10 fattest cities in the country are in Texas
15. Mark Cuban
16. Shit-load of Wal-Marts.
17. Jessica Simpson (and Ashlee)
18. Bugs – lots of them
19. Pick-up trucks – lots of them

more??

  • There's lots of places that have not seen PJ in five years or way, way more.

I don't think they sell as well here, especially compared to cities in the northeast and west coast. These are just not very appealing cities for them to come to. The past two stops in Dallas they play the same theater in the butthole of the ghetto, there's no way to get around, and no reason to, so they probably don't have any fond memories of this city. I can tell you for sure that any event, no matter what, at Starplex (smirnoff/superpages.com center) will bring out all the mulleted rednecks. That's one culture that is hard to embrace, in fact, it's a big turnoff if that's one of your impressions of the city.

Pj probably doesn't care about most of your list. They have the luxury to be selective and Texas just isn't worth it to them when they can do the NE and west coast.

I would just like to point out that most of those don't apply to Austin, the little blue dot in a sea of red. Except for Matthew McConaughey, we take full responsibility for that one. Sorry. I coulda sworn he owned at least one shirt when he lived here, though.

Also, could we keep the responses to only those who've actually been to Texas, there are enough true stereotypes without the made-up ones (we all ride horses, etc.) It's been pretty fair so far, but I could see this thread getting ridiculous.

    Thank you.

I know. Just having fun with it with it because I was pretty disappointed and pissed off about the ACL thing.

Here's another one: You know how Texas is the red state capital of the country. Well, we rank 47th in average SAT scores.

Here is one that really gets under Vedder's skin: we are 49th in percentage of women who vote.

Actually, while TX does have an abundance of Satan's Stores, the award for most stores per capita goes to Arkansas (headquarters of Wal-Mart are in Bentonville, I believe). In fact, Texas isn't even in the top ten.

    http://www.stat.columbia.edu/~cook/movabletype/archives/2008/03/starbuckswalmar.html Check out the data.

As for reasons they wouldn't want to play Texas, and Austin specifically, you've got me. There's still a good shot that they'll be in Dallas and Houston in September.

There's lots of places that have not seen PJ in five years or way, way more.

I don't understand why people keep saying they don't sell well here. Every show I've been to has been at least 90-95% full, even in OKC! So, unless your saying that they don't sell well as far as CDs then I just don't buy it. I'm pretty pissed off this morning now that I know for sure they won't be coming here. I wish they would just fucking come down here to shut us up if for anything else.

    21. Another reason they don't come here is Dallas is home to almost all known $30,000 millionaires.
