Americans and Canadians

Ive been watching the winter Olympics and i wonder in a fun way what the difference between the two is from a neighbour perspective is.? Obviously the accent. But i think it would be funny as an english man to hear what you tease eachother about and what you jokingly think the difference is. In England we have fun with the welsh and scots and some irish . I bet there is a similar sort of banter. Teach me!

I like that. So you are more like the English. I think i would like to go to Canada one day. Ive been to usa and it kind of felt fake if you know what i mean. Hi how are ya kinda felt insincere. Like have a great day! I met some Canadians at pj shows and a bar owner at pj in Belfast all cool except one Canadian probably on these boards that stole a tambo ed threw to me in vienna. Not cool. But ed went back and got another for me so ended well. Its on you tube. That guy annoyed me.....oh well.

  • Whats the population of both.
    Canada pop.:  35,151,728 (2016 census)
United States pop.: 326,766,748 (2018 estimate)

It's really hard to quantify our differences.
A lot of it is ephemeral.  I think that people who have travelled to each other's countries would agree with that statement.  But differences certainly do exist beyond the broad stereotypes.  Very hard to put a finger on specifics though.  Accents for sure, but then East Coasters and Newfoundlanders sound nothing like people from Ontario.  Western Canadians sound different as well.  And of course you have Quebecers, the majority of which are Francophone.

It's really difficult to generalize about countries as big as the US and Canada but some general comparisons:

Canada 9.98 sq. km, US 9.83 sq
    Canada 35,623,680 people, US 326,625,791

    Guns per capita:
    Canada: 30.8 per 100 people
    US: 101 per 100 people

Crime rate: US 43% more than Canada

(Is there a correlation between the last two above?)

Literacy- about equal between the two countries.

From personal experience, I would say Canadian cities are far cleaner than US cities.  They seem safer to me as well.

I was comparing Texas to Quebec because both wish they were their own countries.
Cheese fries is the closest thing we have to covering fries in any type of sauce.
Aboowt is totally a real thing.  I've heard it with my own ears.

Honestly, most Americans don't think about Canada at all.  We are taught almost nothing about Canada in public school (we pretty much don't learn about any country we haven't been to war with) and we think and know little of Canada.
Most people only know the stereotypes of nice people who say 2 or 3 words differently than us, fishing and a vague sense of cold weather.

    It's pretty sad really.

Some of us live close enough to Canada that we often think of them. I get CBUT, the local CBC affiliate, as part of my basic cable subscription, so have spent decades watching Canadian news with Peter Mansbridge Ian Hanomansing, etc..., watching Hockey Night in Canada with Don Cherry & Ron MacLean, enjoyed local WHL rivalries in Major Junior hockey against Canadian teams, soccer rivalry with Vancouver Whitecaps. And as teenagers we'd cross the border to have our first "legal" drinks at 19. Before my kids turned 21 they continued that tradition. I love Canada! As a bonus, their anthem is way better than ours.
