I don't think the "Moonbeam" label works at all for Trudeau. He's done nothing to warrant it, but more than that, the Mayor in Vancouver, Gregor Robertson, is already quite famously nicknamed Mayor Moonbeam, and it's much more apt when it comes to him (not to mention original).

Great news about the Senate making that amendment, but, rather shockingly, the Libs seem pretty closed off to it from what I heard on the news. I just don't get it.

I did not know that about the Vancouver mayor, I first heard the term when some radio personality referred to some politician "moonbeam". I can go with PM "sunny ways". I have no use for liberals or conservatives at the federal level (in Ontario none of the parties work for me) ... The only difference between him and Harper is personality. They both pretty much have similar policies just a different spin ... But most importantly their both fucking dictators ... electoral reform, hold a referendum ... Why should we trust 400 politicians to decide our fate? Voting down the ndp's motion to decriminalize marijuana.wtf...quit allowing the cops and court system to give people criminal records for one of the least harmful drugs available, not the liberals...somehow decriminalizing would allow the drug cartels to thrive, wtf, they thrive already. These politicians are control freak dictators...

Jerry Brown, governor of California, was/is known as governor Moonbeam as far back as the late '70s. I think his then girlfriend, Linda Ronstadt called him Moonbeam in an interview, and it just stuck.

Weak dude. Lol, why do people like to quote the lamest, most ineffective Conservative campaign slogan of all time? Lol, gotta love it when people take a failed idea and run with it.

I know it's sarcasm... so was the original failed campaign slogan. Which is probably why it went over like a brick and made the Conservatives look bad.

Yeah I'm sure it's been used with many sunny way politicians in the past, I don't remember who the radio host was referring to, it could also be used for our current premier of Ontario.

I didn't think the conservatives needed help looking bad, neither do the liberals.

For sure. Vexing to say the least. Someone blamed this on some doctor lobby... If true, to what end? What doctor lobby would want to prevent suffering? I actually haven't heard a single word in the media on what exactly is behind this resistance by the Libs.

I'm just shocked that Trudeau actually has this option to be honest. The rest of his opinions on issues really don't line up with this one at all. I wish he would address it directly so that I at least understood where the fuck he's coming from (not that that would make this stand against THE LAW as determined by the Supreme Court any more acceptable, but it's nice to understand how a leader thinks at least).

I thought that was the senates job ... Make amendments to proposed legislation, if not, then we Canadians really are suckers doling out all that money to the upper chamber just to have them rubber stamp everything.

That is their job, and for once they're actually doing it... and the Libs are rejecting their amendment for some fucking reason, even though EVERYONE is making the same recommendations. I'm really getting pissed off!

Why is there no/so little info as to why Trudeau is opposed?

The only reason I've seen presented so far is that he's opposed in principle to the unelected nature of the senate, and thinks they should simply rubber stamp the work of the elected officials.

This is (thankfully) proving the senate's worth as the chamber of sober second thought.

I guess Harper was right with his choices.

My initial comment to your question was going to be a whispered "Because he's Harper (with nice hair).", lol.

However, being on day 3 of no cigs I'm not quite ready to handle the reaction that comment would have drawn, so I went factual and now post my first thought as a "joke" (not a particularly good one, I know, lol).

Trust me, I get what you're saying, but know that at this specific moment I can't count on myself to react reasonably/rationally, lol. I just have to use the senate that's in my head (second thought and all) a bit more at the moment, I guess, lol.

Interesting, because normally I would completely agree with him, lol. This is literally the first time in my life when I thought the Senate was doing something worthwhile (that I was aware of, that is... they may have done useful things that I had no clue about)!

That's hilarious, since Harper opposed doctor assisted suicide.

I read it as a simple "stick to your beliefs," without a bias either way. I'm only dancing around things (read: trying to be more careful how I post) because I know I'm not 100% thinking clearly at the moment and don't want to cause needless or excessive offence (I'll point to my post last night in the thread about the gator attack as an example).

At the moment, my brain feels like: yushabdhxzndjroeoskdbtbdjakarjntnsnentbsbsbdnrrgrdn (works and feels better on a real keyboard, not my current touch screen, lol). But I haven't smoked since Monday, so I'm happy, sort of, lol. I'll shut up now, both to get the thread back on topic, as well as tend to dinner, lol.

    Edited for poor punctuation, lol.
