^^^ It's easy to be skeptical about money. I am at times. I spend a lot more time studying where my dollars go than I used to. After reading Yvon Chouinard excellent Let My People Go Surfing a good while back I started donating 1% of my sales to environmental action groups That may not sound like much because many companies say "we donate 10% of our profits to charity" and although many have good intentions, that often a way to make one's company look good while giving very little. 1% of gross sales is almost always a greater commitment than 10% of one's profits.*
I also inserted a 10% tithe in my family budget for donations. Giving money to carefully researched organizations is a good thing in my opinion.
But, yes, doing is always the best. I'm not trying to garner kudos saying this (or anything else here) but I've donated to a lot of social and environmental issues but have felt better and more useful when doing things like organizing a 350.org rally, participating in beach clean up, attending county board meeting, state assembly meetings, volunteering at our county health library, etc.
And there are many other ways to help- be a good listener to someone having difficulty, create good will by apologizing for fuck ups (man, have I done that a lot!), let the little old lady in line go ahead because she looks tired. Every small action in helping makes a difference.
I feel so upset every time I see/read/hear about this crisis. I can't even imagine how desperate some of those people are - I literally get choked up about it. It's shameful that the world as a whole still hasn't managed to figure out a way to help them. There are enough resources and enough space to help them and find homes and jobs for them, but it would take international cooperation and coordination, and the no world leaders give a fuck. A few countries and people are attempting to step up and do what they can, but it's not nearly enough and they have no support. This crisis, to me, is highlighting how selfish the world is.
Of course I do not expect just those European countries bordering on crossings to deal with it all. I feel terrible for their situation as well. I'm sure it's a real rock and a hard place for thise who aren't just nastily angry and defensive. It's sad to think of the dilemma that puts some good people in.
What an awful, depressing clusterfuck. There as we're now more refugees in the world right at this very second as there were during all of the Second World War.
Why don't you uproot your life and go help?
The answer you give is likely the same as everyone else who is too "selfish to help"
Aside from your religious beliefs I agree with your above statements. I myself am not personally in a position to uproot my life and go help/sponsor a refugee. I am also aware enough to realize that my donation to the cause means fuck all.
So in the meantime I continue to see this current event unfold before my eyes (via press) all the while awaiting for the next "human crisis"
There are walkers and talkers. I am doing fuck all about this crisis because I don't know where to begin. Donating money means/does nothing except stroke the ego of bleeding heart first worlders.
So can you imagine if everybody thought like you nothing would get done no one would help people would just die , I'd rather believe in people like dignin who actually feels compelled to help out in any way he can .....
Going to sound cold but if Europe and or Canada or the US just openly accepted all these folks more and more would come and countries would go broke, it's citizens would revolt and we would have a major mess.
just out of curriosity, how many of you would take some of these families into your home ? I mean really, how many ? I know some of you would say yes but really think about it before you answer, do you trust strangers with your belongings or your kid's ?, I don't expect an honest answer on here but while your at home or work think about that for a while, are you willing to take strangers (1 or 2 families) into your home with your family ?
Godfather.
If the brown people scare you Godfather, you can still open up your heart and give cold hard cash to the cause. It would be very welcome.
brown people scar me ? cold hard cash ?....well my wife is brown and I wouldn't want to piss her off, cold hard cash to who ? the red cross ? or one of those other shady money grabbing charity fronts ?...if you think the US wont be pouring cash into this one way or another your not thinking and I'd be willing to bet the people that need it never see a dime in the way of help.
Godfather.
Should we celebrate the fact that one of the instigators of the current crises is going to pump money into helping the victims of it's abuse.
It should be expected, at the very very least
are you saying the US instigated this ?
Godfather.
I'm saying that there are many factors, of which the US is certainly a big player, are you saying they have no role to play in it?
I don't know..you'd have to prove that to me.
Godfather.
I don't have to prove a thing, if you are suggesting that the US has no part to play in this disaster then you have your blinkers well and firmly on. History denied is history repeated.
Going to sound cold but if Europe and or Canada or the US just openly accepted all these folks more and more would come and countries would go broke, it's citizens would revolt and we would have a major mess.
Going to sound cold, but if Europe, Canada, and the US didn't drop bombs on these people as well as fund both sides of nearly every bloody conflict in the middle east then perhaps there would not be the scale of crisis we are now facing.
Bomb their country back to the stone age and then criticise them for wanting to be part of the 21st century.
i have a 4 bedroom house for just me. has a completely empty basement i am going to finish as well. i could open my house to a refugee family.
where do i go on the web to look into it?
Depends on what kind of family you want to take in. One that has to be religiously accommodated or not? How big of family do you want? The first year costs would be around 20-30K, food, clothing, etc. How long do you want this family living with you?
Oh and here is link https://lifelinesyria.ca/sponsor/ for what hoops to encounter if you are in Canada and want to house a refugee family. I'd imagine that it would be quite similar to everyone else. So for those of you that don't just want to throw money at the problem here is a link As someone mentioned earlier shit or get off the pot. https://lifelinesyria.ca/sponsor/
thanks for the link. it appears that it is only in toronto. i have googled and looked for lifelinesyria usa, lifelinesyria united states, and lifelinesyria america and all i found were links about news reports for the links that you provided. it seems like it is something that is more suited for a group of people. i am not wealthy enough to be able to do it by myself unfortunately. i will keep looking around and try to post any useful links that i find in case people around here would like to band together and try to sponsor someone.

Hey gimmie, you might want to try and contact some of your local church organizations. Here in my area they are the ones most on top of trying to private sponsor refugees.

as much as i am church-averse, it might be the only option. thanks for the heads up.

Yeah me too.....but the ones in my area have been working on bringing families from Syria here for a few years

Well don't disagree that the west has some responsibility but believe that many, even those that aren't refugees, well clamor to Europeans social benefit plans. happened before wests interference with Middle East and will continue afterwards. There's reason they are headed there and not less beneficial countries. Once those in poorer countries see opening more will rush. Don't blame them. Not sustainable. Only so many that pay taxes. So point only it will get uglier and European countries will be forced to hold the line. We'll see.
Maybe the us will keep it's nose out and maybe leave more decisions for intervention to Europeans that will feel ramifications more.

You are making a lot of assumptions here callen. A lot of these refugees are educated people that will add to an economy/society, and not be a burden. You happen to live in a country built on the backs of immigrants and refugees, and so do I.
And let's be clear, the vast majority of these Syrian refugees are leaving Syria because they have to, not because they want to. Their home and way of life has been completely destroyed.
Saw this on FB with he heading "Hungarians waiting by the highway with food to give to the refugees who will arrive on foot."
Ugh. Always having to take credit for doing good. I find it more respectful for people who do it and ask nothing in return or don't want any photos or recognition. Taking your photo with a basket of bananas just makes me want to puke.
Hopefully these "migrants" don't Rob and beat her for those bananas and her camera.

Sure as hell better than doing nothing and criticising those who do. Does it make you feel inadequate or something? You talk about "doing God's work" when some bigot tries to disenfranchise gay couples and then shit on these people who are very literally following the words of Jesus because they let someone take a picture of them? Typical Christian bullshit. Self-centered, judgemental, hypocritical, moronic dogmas.

Seemingly-intentional too.
Some odd MO's around here lately, but I look at this way - welcome to those who show their character and heart, or lack thereof. Would rather the exposure be there than not, no matter the outcome.

Geezuz.
Are you sure these people did this for publicity? One can't be too sure from the photo, but they look pretty down to earth and humble to me.
As RG asked... aren't you a god fearing person? Don't you believe there's a man floating in the sky somewhere that is omnipresent and makes judgements on everyone? What do you think the big fella thinks of you being so pessimistic? You better change your attitude or your soul might not get exclusive access to heaven where all those other billion souls are chilling in right now.

There is only one commonality in these conflicts, and it's crazy Muslims....right?

No it's not dig.Im just saying these same folks who say they would help by opening their homes are talking shit.Thats all.
