I don't think this is even a case where the gov't will "take" your gun...they just won't approve a gun permit to purchase if you happen to be on "the list"

I don't get this at all. if the social security administration has a certain way to tell if people are mentally unstable, then why not give that way to the FBI or ATF so they can use it with their background checks? I mean what are we saying is going to happen here? actually fuck it, let's get other irrelevant agencies involved in the anti gun movement. let's get the DMV involved, if you can't pass your sight exam, no gun for you. if you can't see, then you can't shoot. and make it to where you have to buy gun insurance when you buy your car insurance. oh how about the county appraisal districts. if you can't pay your property taxes, you shouldn't have money for a gun. and obviously if you're collecting unemployment or on welfare you shouldn't be able to buy a gun too. how about the IRS? if you can't figure out how to pay your taxes, you won't be able to figure out how to operate a gun in a safe manner. ohh let's toss in the school districts too. if your kids a dunski, odds are apple doesn't fall far from the tree. we can use kids report cards to make sure their parents can't get guns. oh man the list is endless this is fun. there's so many useless government bureaucracies out there that we could assimilate into the anti gun movement.

I believe that is what is being proposed. SSA will provide information on those receiving disability payments for mental type disabilities to those administering the background checks. It isn't a separate check.

GF your reading comprehension has to be the worst I have ever come across.

The issue has nothing to do with collecting social security. It's related to social security "DISABILITY" which is a completely separate type of benefit. To qualify for SSI you have to have a proven DISABILITY (i.e. mental) in order to collect benefits. If you are mental why should you get a gun?

You can still be old and crazy and collect social security and have your stupid gun. If you collect SSI you can't be crazy.....see?

The article that YOU POSTED even refers to those payments being made to "representative payees"...that means that those whose benefits are being managed by someone else because they are disabled or completely unable to care for themselves.

When I reach the age that I can collect SS, I hope I don't need to. If I do, I hope it isn't on disability. If it is on disability, I hope I don't feel the need to protect myself. If I feel the need to protect myself and I'm not even well enough to collect my own SSI cheque, I certainly don't think I deserve the right to do so with firearms.

Again, nowhere in the article does it say if you collect SS you are too old to own a gun. It says if you collect SSI you are not fit - either physically or mentally - to own a gun. Not too many quadriplegics vying for gun rights. Not too many representatives of theirs vying for them to have them either - I wonder why. Far too many mentally unsound vying for gun rights, however.

When I reach the age that I can collect SS, I hope I don't need to. If I do, I hope it isn't on disability. If it is on disability, I hope I don't feel the need to protect myself. If I feel the need to protect myself and I'm not even well enough to collect my own SSI cheque, I certainly don't think I deserve the right to do so with firearms.

I knew that comment was coming.....it appears some have fears this is the beginning of the end to owning guns in this country. I don't think that's the case, I'm all for background checks. One has to have one to rent an apartment, job etc....so why not to see if a person is incapable of caring for themselves. With all the many mass shootings which have had a link to mental unfitness this purposal could curtail these shootings.

Any better suggestions to stop these shootings when dealing with those who are deemed mentally unfit? It's a difficult issue but this country has approach it, start the process to do something dealing mental illness. It's STILL rather easy to get all the guns we need even with our lax background check.

Well done Miastro, some of us need some guidance and understanding in this thing we call life. Your patience is outstanding, I have some but from time to time I can completely lose it and I can't even bother to participate properly.
