There is absolutely nothing more fitting than the fact that all flags at the South Carolina state house are at half mast except one...the confederate flag

So apparently his room mate says he has been planning this for 6 months or more.

Did it not occur to the room mate to notify anybody??

I guess he thought better of the "..... and then kill himself after" part. I wonder what he's thinking about it now that he's been caught?

i want to know who the mutual friend is. the one who introduced the shooter to his roommate. i'm willing to bet that all three of them have links to a white separatist/supremacy group.

More than guns, I'm wondering when we will finally address the problem of all the anti-psychotic drugs being fed to people. I will be absolutely stunned if we find out this guy wasn't fucking nuts and loaded up on pills. The problems we have in this country are a psychological epidemic. This is the saddest day I've had in a long time. Thoughts and prayers to all the families.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this kid wasn't on one Zoloft or Prozac. This is the confederate flag toting capital of the US. The fucking flag used to fly ON TOP of the capitol building. Now it's just on the capitol grounds. Racism is bred here.

At this point we don't seem to have any real information about whether this guy had a mental illness or not. We do, however, have some information about his own stated aims, which were to kill black people because he thought they were taking over the country, and the beliefs implied by his identification with white supremacist groups. At one point in American history, his beliefs were commonplace; does that mean that everyone who held those views was mentally ill? A sizable chunk of the population (although thankfully diminishing) still believes it - are they all mentally ill? Were all those Germans who followed Hitler mentally ill? Were the Hutus who participated in the Rwandan genocide mentally ill?

I'll say again what I've said it before on AMT and AET - I continue to be disturbed by the way we casually blame mental illness for these sorts of crimes of hate and violence. The evidence is clear that the vast majority of violence is perpetrated by people without mental illness. Racism and hate is not a mental illness. Alcohol and drug use is far more highly correlated to violence than mental illness, and there is some initial information that this guy used at least some sorts of drugs. And yet every time some guy engages in a mass murder or spree killing we automatically talk about "mental illness". Most of these guys are not really mentally ill; they may have really disturbed personality development and they may have serious anger issues, but that's not the same as mental illness. Even the fact that they may have seen a psychiatrist or psychologist before doesn't necessarily imply the existence of a mental illness, since people either seek out (or are forced to seek out) mental health assessment and treatment for all sorts of reasons that can include pressure from family, employer or even the legal system, a desire to get certain medications prescribed, or even a genuine desire to change things in their lives (these sorts of people are rarely happy, although they tend to misplace the blame for that).

And Shawshank, you seem to be implying that "antipsychotic drugs" would contribute to him being violent, which is almost certainly false. He may or may not be psychotic; we don't know yet. If he was, maybe proper treatment would have prevented this, but it's unlikely that proper treatment would have caused this.

  • What pisses me off the most is the fact that these were good people going about their business like any other day. They had their morning coffees, shared laughs, cleared their plate for church, and then crossed paths with a fukin idiot of the highest order. Early in the day, they had no idea that later in the day, fate would present them a horrifying end to their life.

Looking down the barrel of that gun prior to it going off and staring at that mushroom headed loser pulling the trigger must have been awful. I wonder how many people had smiled at dickhead to make him feel welcome in their church prior to him pulling his gun out and shooting them?

What a pig to rob these people of their life. What an obscene act that has people from all over the planet sickened by it. And I hate to say it, but I feel some people are complicit here if varying published reports are true: an armed fukin idiot talks of inciting a civil war while hate mongering and you think nothing of it?

I totally get why Steward would say that/feel that way. On the other hand, if we think about what the number of people who got involved in the Civil Rights Movement after Birmingham church bombing in '63 and the advances that movement created...it's time to stand up and carry that progress forward again.

Was just looking at an article in Huffington Post and it had that photo of the kid in custody with his tongue sticking out and this little sparkle in his eye that says, "gee, look at me!" I don't wanna see that shit anymore. I don't want that kid or his eyes or his hair or any of that shit in my head. I just want to remember those who went down, give support to those grieving and speak up about putting this kind of insane behavior down. But I don't know how to change it. We need strong leadership, great spokespeople and brave souls to move us forward. I just hope I'm not overly optimistic. I can't believe this shit still happens. It's insane.

So many leaders in the community dead. For no reason at all. A goose creek hs track coach. A librarian. A senator. Reverends. These were people that taught, made laws, and led this community.

Sad situation and there has to be more to this story. I went to HS for a year at Goose Creek, played basketball and baseball.

    Peace
I did not know you were a local. When were you in Berkeley county?
Actually it was a year and half I hated life there, it far too country for me. I also lived in Charleston too, I went King HS off King St this was in 75'-76'. It appears that whole area has changed with the police force and now this shooting. The saddest part in all this in 6 months or less we will another shooting like this. All the guns in the U.S. won't be able to stop the next tradegy.

    Peace

Ok. You were here we'll before I was. Goose creek is quite the big town these days. They have expanded north and met moncks corner around Carnes crossroads.

I said it all day yesterday. He didn't have the balls to finish the job and just kill himself. Coward.

That was moving. One thing I have noticed, all across this country, is people everywhere have felt this. You can see the hurt and the fear in Jon Stewarts face. He is 100% correct. He fucking gets it.

You don't have to be a religious person to understand that if you can't feel safe in church, where the fuck else can you feel safe in this place?

I've lived here for 16 years. I came from NW Indiana where everybody but me seemed to hunt and had guns. My brother had several guns. I still don't understand the fascination with them. I always thought hey, it's our right. The constitution says so. But after Sandy hook and now this, I believe my right, Senator Clementa Pinkney, and the 8 other victims as well as the 26 killed at Sandy hooks right to live far exceeds your right to own a gun.

That document was written when the most powerful weapon known to man was a musket that took 4 minutes to reload if you were a marksman.

    Thumbs up

Also, this dude's parents or whoever the fuck raised him should be arrested, especially if they did in fact give him a handgun for his 21'st birthday.
