we just wish that it doesn't take more things like this to happen before your nation has a real discussion about guns. mental health, racism and violence in general
But let’s be clear: at some point we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. .... And at some point its going to be important for the American people to come to grips with it, and for us to be able to shift how we think about the issue of gun violence collectively.
I am convinced that nothing is going to change in this generation. If Sandy fuckin' Hook didn't bring about any concrete changes for reform I don't for the life of me see anything that will. It's going to have to be one of those things that happens in a couple decades when the KIDS WHO SURVIVED are in powerful places and able to make changes. For now I think we're screwed.
I can't pretend to understand gun culture or "deep south" anything. My only experience with the "deep south" was a little over a decade ago I was helping out a friend who was driving two cars back to NY from Miami. This equates to me (5'2 Caucasian female) an Asian dude, and 3-4 brown people stopping for gas and meals and once for a catnap. As it was some time ago the story has become unclear as whether it occurred in Georgia or South Carolina but we had communication issue with a waitress who couldn't understand our accents, which is innocent enough. But the part that terrified me was in the gas station when I went to get everyone some cold caffeine and some scary ass motherfucker cornered me asking what I was doing with a bunch of wetbacks and making generally creepy sort of advances. Every chick on here who's been in public knows what I mean. I just don't know the right words for "looking at me like i was dinner". I shit you not I refused to leave the car without an escort, INCLUDING to use the restroom after that until we got to Jersey. Obviously that's an isolated incident and the waitress was a rather innocent sort of ignorance thing - But I'll take the South Bronx over the American South any day, thank you very much.
I don't think that this kid should be given any level of leniency whatsoever despite the inevitable finding that he is mentally ill. How many people of color are in the US prison system with mental illness that never got address or treated or garnered them any sympathy?
Wetback is taught to children down here. I hear it weekly. Our cleaning crew is mostly illegal mexicans. After hearing one guy get particularly rough with one of the cleaning ladies, I asked her, in my broken Spanish to give me her mop and take a seat at my desk. I gave the mop to the guy and said finish the floor. He looked at me like I was Satan himself. I said finish the floor or go home. I don't care which you pick but you will apologize to that woman when you do choose.

Good for you for sticking up for her Last 12. That doushenozzle probably went home and beat his wife after that.
My friends weren't even Mexican, not that that matters. I really don't understand this overt balls out racism. I understand ignorance and fear of the unknown (not that I excuse either) but I do NOT understand white supremacy in any way shape or form.
I'll echo Shawshank's sentiment that we need to address the mental illness component here but I think it's equally important to address the weapons component.
For the record, I do not, generally speaking, oppose hunting. Although the thought of it does make me uncomfortable and slightly sick, I do feel that it is in fact a valuable skill to have, and that as long as it's controlled and the animals that are killed get used for food, it should still be allowed legally.
But no, I ain't going hunting with you. Though I'll buy a chop or two off you once you have it butchered. I never had fresh meat before. Wait do lambs get hunted? I don't think I want to eat deer..... Nevermind.
My first and only hunting experience sets up like this:
Walker----->>>>
I stand here another guy here another guy here
That's in a patch of woods. When the walker reaches me, I get up and walk out of the woods into the field and move to the next guy. So I'm doodling in the leaves. Not paying a but of attention. I notice the walker came to me so I got up and started walking to the field. Next thing I hear is DEER, SHOOT! Then POW! I hit the ground so fast and started yelling "stop fucking shooting, I'm not a fucking deer!"
Turns out there was a deer nowhere near me. I dropped my friends shot gun on the ground and said fuck you guys, I'm walking home!
Trying to explain to my 14 and 10 year old daughters why this punk did this is impossible. "Daddy, why did he kill those people?" I couldn't do it without breaking down. "Because he hated black people." My daughters have never seen me cry. Not even after I crushed my hand and lost a couple fingers. "Promise me girls, don't hate. Don't judge people based on color or religion. It's just not how we are supposed to be."
Waking up this morning, I really thought I would be remembering fallen brothers of the past. Though I'm not a fan of Nikki Haley, she summed it up well when she said " the heart and soul of south Carolina has been ripped out."
Thanks for letting me vent here.
Last-12, I too have been crying a lot today. After college in the mid-90s, I moved to Charleston and spent the best five years of my life there before moving away. I return to Chas several times a year for 20 years now to visit my friends who are as close to me as family. I have a trip planned next week, in fact. I've been following my friends' posts and the P&C all day, and it's just been heart-wrenching. I was a teacher in the public school system. I know everything you mean about the deep-seated racism that exists among so many. Ultimately I left that racist system because I felt so useless and powerless to change anything and therefore part of the problem. Of all the career decisions I've ever made, it's the only one I regret on a morally conscious level. The day I announced I was leaving, one of my most challenging students said to me, "Why do all the good ones leave us?" Her words haunt me all these years later and tug me back to wanting to return -- that and Folly Beach, which is a whole other story :-). With all that said, I am also heartened by the outpouring of support from everybody in the city. There are the typical jackasses commenting in the local rags, but overwhelmingly people are sending their prayers. Mock religion all we want, but southerners do hold their God dear to them and do not hold back from expressing their prayers in dark times. It will be the collective faith of Charleston residents that ultimately does heal them. If that's what it takes, I'm okay with that.
Funny quick story. If you were watching CNN around 11 or so thks morning, you saw CNN anchor John Berman in Charleston. You saw him duck when a Charleston city fire department engine came through that intersection blowing every horn and siren they had. I text Mike and ask if he was the on that engine that just goosed that reporter. His response "I may have been driving that engine."

there is so much i want to say. so many details. so many issues.
i heard a clown on the radio call in and blame obama for this. he said that obama started the race war when he had that harvard professor over for the beer summit. i turned the radio off in disgust.
it wasn't obama. it was a cowardly white kid with deep seeded racist thoughts who cold heartedly calculated this attack and carried it out. he methodically reloaded 5 times. he told them that he is killing them because they are raping white women, and they are taking over the country and it has to end. sick sick shit right there.
my heart goes out to they guys on here who are in charleston or who have ties there. reading some of the updates from you guys really got to me.
i look at this from the historical perspective. south carolina was the birthplace of the confederacy. most of the people there are descendants of confederate veterans. many of those vets were racist. racism is taught, and it is passed down in the family. from fathers to sons, from grandfathers to sons. even now, 150 years later, racism is still prevalent there. i live in missouri and it is prevalent here. i can't imagine how it would be in south carolina. people call alabama and mississippi and georgia the deep south. but south carolina is just as deep as any of them.
i saw on fox, yes i watched clips from fox, where they were calling this anything but racism. they were saying it was an attack on religion, on christianity. i guaranfucking tee this guy is is a christian. most racists in the southern united states are christians. i was appalled that fox took that narrative.
sorry for the incoherent rant. my mind is going in 100 different directions. i just wish all this hatred, and terrorism would stop. this happens way too often. i give props to obama for what he said, even though the talking heads are going to crucify him for it.

So many leaders in the community dead. For no reason at all. A goose creek hs track coach. A librarian. A senator. Reverends. These were people that taught, made laws, and led this community.
Sad situation and there has to be more to this story. I went to HS for a year at Goose Creek, played basketball and baseball.
Peace
I did not know you were a local. When were you in Berkeley county?
Actually it was a year and half I hated life there, it far too country for me. I also lived in Charleston too, I went King HS off King St this was in 75'-76'. It appears that whole area has changed with the police force and now this shooting. The saddest part in all this in 6 months or less we will another shooting like this. All the guns in the U.S. won't be able to stop the next tradegy.

I can't fucking believe someone would try to pin this on Obama. Well, I guess I can believe it but, yes, disgusting is the word for for someone coming up with that load.

More than guns, I'm wondering when we will finally address the problem of all the anti-psychotic drugs being fed to people. I will be absolutely stunned if we find out this guy wasn't fucking nuts and loaded up on pills. The problems we have in this country are a psychological epidemic. This is the saddest day I've had in a long time. Thoughts and prayers to all the families.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this kid wasn't on one Zoloft or Prozac. This is the confederate flag toting capital of the US. The fucking flag used to fly ON TOP of the capitol building. Now it's just on the capitol grounds. Racism is bred here.
At this point we don't seem to have any real information about whether this guy had a mental illness or not. We do, however, have some information about his own stated aims, which were to kill black people because he thought they were taking over the country, and the beliefs implied by his identification with white supremacist groups. At one point in American history, his beliefs were commonplace; does that mean that everyone who held those views was mentally ill? A sizable chunk of the population (although thankfully diminishing) still believes it - are they all mentally ill? Were all those Germans who followed Hitler mentally ill? Were the Hutus who participated in the Rwandan genocide mentally ill?
I'll say again what I've said it before on AMT and AET - I continue to be disturbed by the way we casually blame mental illness for these sorts of crimes of hate and violence. The evidence is clear that the vast majority of violence is perpetrated by people without mental illness. Racism and hate is not a mental illness. Alcohol and drug use is far more highly correlated to violence than mental illness, and there is some initial information that this guy used at least some sorts of drugs. And yet every time some guy engages in a mass murder or spree killing we automatically talk about "mental illness". Most of these guys are not really mentally ill; they may have really disturbed personality development and they may have serious anger issues, but that's not the same as mental illness. Even the fact that they may have seen a psychiatrist or psychologist before doesn't necessarily imply the existence of a mental illness, since people either seek out (or are forced to seek out) mental health assessment and treatment for all sorts of reasons that can include pressure from family, employer or even the legal system, a desire to get certain medications prescribed, or even a genuine desire to change things in their lives (these sorts of people are rarely happy, although they tend to misplace the blame for that).
And Shawshank, you seem to be implying that "antipsychotic drugs" would contribute to him being violent, which is almost certainly false. He may or may not be psychotic; we don't know yet. If he was, maybe proper treatment would have prevented this, but it's unlikely that proper treatment would have caused this.

What pisses me off the most is the fact that these were good people going about their business like any other day. They had their morning coffees, shared laughs, cleared their plate for church, and then crossed paths with a fukin idiot of the highest order. Early in the day, they had no idea that later in the day, fate would present them a horrifying end to their life.
Looking down the barrel of that gun prior to it going off and staring at that mushroom headed loser pulling the trigger must have been awful. I wonder how many people had smiled at dickhead to make him feel welcome in their church prior to him pulling his gun out and shooting them?
What a pig to rob these people of their life. What an obscene act that has people from all over the planet sickened by it. And I hate to say it, but I feel some people are complicit here if varying published reports are true: an armed fukin idiot talks of inciting a civil war while hate mongering and you think nothing of it?

I totally get why Steward would say that/feel that way. On the other hand, if we think about what the number of people who got involved in the Civil Rights Movement after Birmingham church bombing in '63 and the advances that movement created...it's time to stand up and carry that progress forward again.

Was just looking at an article in Huffington Post and it had that photo of the kid in custody with his tongue sticking out and this little sparkle in his eye that says, "gee, look at me!" I don't wanna see that shit anymore. I don't want that kid or his eyes or his hair or any of that shit in my head. I just want to remember those who went down, give support to those grieving and speak up about putting this kind of insane behavior down. But I don't know how to change it. We need strong leadership, great spokespeople and brave souls to move us forward. I just hope I'm not overly optimistic. I can't believe this shit still happens. It's insane.

Ok. You were here we'll before I was. Goose creek is quite the big town these days. They have expanded north and met moncks corner around Carnes crossroads.

That was moving. One thing I have noticed, all across this country, is people everywhere have felt this. You can see the hurt and the fear in Jon Stewarts face. He is 100% correct. He fucking gets it.
You don't have to be a religious person to understand that if you can't feel safe in church, where the fuck else can you feel safe in this place?
I've lived here for 16 years. I came from NW Indiana where everybody but me seemed to hunt and had guns. My brother had several guns. I still don't understand the fascination with them. I always thought hey, it's our right. The constitution says so. But after Sandy hook and now this, I believe my right, Senator Clementa Pinkney, and the 8 other victims as well as the 26 killed at Sandy hooks right to live far exceeds your right to own a gun.
That document was written when the most powerful weapon known to man was a musket that took 4 minutes to reload if you were a marksman.

You don't have to be a religious person to understand that if you can't feel safe in church, where the fuck else can you feel safe in this place?
Why do a trial? Just give him to the scientists to study and observe for a few months and then ... weeeeee!!!!
