It's because people don't read Kafka anymore. They don't read Asimov, they don't read Vonnegut, or Hemingway, or Steinbeck, they don't read ANYTHING.
So, are you saying I'm not a person?
Although to be completely honest, I don't read Hemingway.
Hemingway was an amazing writer but I get why some don't read him. In any case, you might want to give Old Man and the Sea a try simply for the fact that it is considered to be the closest to a perfect book ever written. Hemingway is said to have scrutinized every word in that short novel.
As for Jeb- he would have to come out with a statement saying he distances himself from his family, reads the likes of Kafka, Kapuściński and Vonnegut and listens to everything from Sun Ra to Pearl Jam before I would consider him presidentially worthy. Hey, why not?! I want my president to have a good cultural background and some smarts.

I want a candidate to have the balls to call bullshit explicitly , in those words, when the need arises. DO the job like you arent running for it again.Have the courage to admit when mistakes are made. Even if it comes to naught it would be refreshing for a short while.
In my view the only way we shift as a society is if a cataclysmic revolutionary event occurs. Blood will and must be shed for that to happen. Has always been thus with this country , and it shall always be so.

That would be great. But other than local elections, I don't see that kind of person ever running.
For all the haters that hate him just because he is a republican ,I would just add he was one hell of a Gov here in Fl.Works both sides of the isle.Hes a solid dude and doesn't cave to special interest and far right nonsense.
He has always been my choice in 16.This pleases me.
Anyone who bashes him because he's a "Bush" has no clue about this guy's political record thus far. I'd say he's not like his dad or his brother at all...he's pretty much himself. And he's had no problems telling other Republicans to fuck off when needed.

My husband and I were discussing this yesterday - the write-off due to name only - and how that mindset is similar to those who'd do the same based solely on gender, race, etc.
Anyone who claims to be openminded...BE openminded.
I guess I have to admit to being somewhat biased and closed minded about this issue. It kind of bugs me to think about having any president from the same family of a former president. It starts to feel like a monarchy or familiogarchy. I'll have to ponder that one some more.
At the same time it kind of bugs me knowing we will have another president from one one two parties, neither of which seems to have become better at what they do but, rather, worse. That, I believe, does not require as much pondering.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Check out corp boards Jeb resigned from. He's established corporate ally though understand most are. Think it's time for new blood. No Clinton's or Bushes. though media and corporations will make it so.
If there is no legitimate Democratic challenger to Hillary then there will be many independents such as myself shopping for an alternative.
Is Hillary too left or too right for you? Or is it some other issue? People have thrown around Elizabeth Warren, but I would not be in favor of her. Although I'm a dem, she is far too anti-business for my blood.
I will no longer again never consider voting for any candidate who is not proactive on slowing climate change/global warming. Which means I will likely never vote for a republican. The republican congress is poised to weaken what I already consider to be fairly weak legislation on climate change. See what I mean here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/05/obama-climate_n_6418628.html?utm_hp_ref=green&ir=Green

I'm not sure why everyone thinks Jeb is just like his brother or his dad. Are all of you just like your dads/moms/brothers/sisters?
Saying we don't need another bush in the White House is just stupid. Now, if you just don't want Jeb for his positions, fine, but don't be so juvenile about it and base it off his last name.
Jeb was always the better Bush
well, when it comes to political families as powerful as theirs, how often do you find one is on a different philosophical wavelengh than the rest?
i like the canadian system. election is called. 6 weeks later we have a new PM. done. a full two years of this bullshit is ridiculous. although it's great for late night tv hosts.
we can complain about term limits, career politicians, nepotism, name recognition over platform, how we really live under a one party system, he influence of money in politics and elections etc....and make really logical observations about the problems we face....but when it comes to reality and the immediate future - we're talking about a possible bush/Clinton ticket here...people Revert to talk of lesser evils...and saying these people should be allowed to stand on their own and prove themselves...? How can we always say that hindsight is 20/20, then ignore its lessons? Is there really no better options than hoping this bush isn't as bad as the rest of the dynasty? Or that Hilary will be more like her husband (just another war criminal), and not the hawkish nut she has proven herself to be since entering politics (on name recognition)? No change, losing hope. Bah.
I don't know what's worse. 2 idiots in the american system, or 17 no-names against 1 idiot in the canadian system.
the apple does not fall far from the tree. the acorn does not fall far from the tree. the berry does not fall far from the bush.
seriously, if jeb were any different, w would have had to distance himself from him in the public eye. he didn't do that. he embraced him. plus, jeb made sure his brother won florida. he handed the presidency to him on a platter.
"You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln
I'm the last one to defend Jeb, but he isn't his brother. He is more like his Dad. W was a dumbass who was controlled by the neocons. Now in fairness, Jeb was associated with the PNAC (project for a new american century) who were the foremost advocates of invading Iraq to make the middle east safe for Israel. This goes back to the mid-90's. He was quiet about those leanings once he became governor.

He is more intelligent than his brother- of that I have no doubt. But if he's more like his dad who invented "a kinder, gentler machine gun hand", I'm still not interested. Besides that, Gimme is right in saying , Jeb handed the presidency to W on a platter. I know it's not fair to generalize a person based on their family and more than it is to do so according to their country of origin or the rock band they listen to but these men are cut from the same cloth and the result will likely be more of the same. If Jeb is elected, I'd loved to be proven wrong but you can guess how I'd place my money if I were to bet on that.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
I'm not sure he handed it, rather than the Sec'y of State in FL. But I don't hold him accountable for that. Any politician would have done the same thing, brother or not. Dem or Republican. And remember, the SC ultimately decided on it.
looks like mittens is out. jeb is testing the waters. santorum is in. palin and trump could be in.... this year's herman cain is ben carson....these are all people who eventually lost out to mitt, with jeb and carson being the exceptions because they did not run.

I am hoping/expecting the Repugs to beat each other to death in the primary like last time, fighting over whether they should be ridiculously conservative or batshit crazy conservative, giving the Dims all the ammo they need to make the Repugs look moronic without breaking a sweat.

i don't think you will have to worry about that.
during the campaign and the early primaries the republicans have to go way to the right and then later on they come back towards the middle to try to attract undecided moderates. all the dems have to do is sit back and let the reps eat their own. i heard that the reps are having just a fraction of the debates they had last time. less opportunities for all of their candidates to screw up.
today i think mitt realized that people are not stupid enough to forget that tape of him talking about the 47%. people knew it was bullshit that he came out this time as a champion against poverty. it was a joke, and the donors let him know they thought he was a fraud.

I was really hoping Mitt would stay in, that would practically ensure a Dim president. Ben Carson is this cycles Herman Cain for sure, he has the teabagger types riled but that doesn't bode well for a general election, and he has never served in a public office...not much in the way of qualifications. The fact that he was a respected physician means pretty much nothing, you and I both know personally that there are some nutjob doctors who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a public office.
You do work in surgery right? Or am I confusing you with someone else? I used to second assist in orthopedics mostly.

there are some quack doctors who run for office. it doesn't make sense to me that a doctor who's entire professional life is based on science, logic, and caring for the people need them can be against things like food stamps, obamacare, or universal single payer insurance, and abortion based on the belief of a man in the sky who told him to oppose it.
i work in orthopedics. in surgery right now i don't scrub but i do things like run the traction table during hip scopes, make sure the scope is taking and printing pictures, post op dressing and brace fitting, change the fluid during scopes etc. i work for a major university who has a ton of residents and fellows. we are opening an outpatient surgery center in june and i will be scrubbing and assisting there because there will be no residents and fellows. i am pretty excited about it. i have an OTC certification, and am going for the OTC/S which is all surgical, so that will be pretty cool. i went with the surgeon i work for to a hip arthroscopy cadaver course last weekend. i got to work with the scope and do some things on a cadaver hip. i am a terrible surgeon. doing things like that make you appreciate exactly how good those guys are with those scopes.

I hope that, regardless of party, someone actually worthy (ie, not smarmy, no glib lines, no telling people what they want to hear with no intention of fulfilling promises, no appealing to emotions vs reason...basically, integrity and lack of bullshit) is elected.
But, I've come to not get my hopes up in that regard. Anyone who makes it to the final run has been coached, primped, consulted with PR people, has social media people in place.
It all just seems so manufactured. Like Hollywood.
I knew an anesthesiologist who believed that prayer can cure cancer and the rapture was coming soon... Crazy!
I didn't even know OTC was a thing. It's funny how different regions use different positions/certifications to get the same job done. My job was great, I worked for Ohio State's biggest competitor, with the same volume of patients and half the residents and third years. I was uncertified, but no certifications are needed to second assist since 3rd years have none. They have a program where you start as an orderly and if you convince them you are smart/competent enough they slowly teach you to scrub and assist, starting with retraction and suction and running the scope on laparoscopic procedures. I did everything, open sterile field, transport patient, position and drape, scrub and assist, transfer patient to PACU, clean the room and start over. If you are slick and they are short handed you get to move up fast to total joints and laminectomies and the sort. I loved orthopedics, I worked specifically for a hip revisionist, he did knees and hips and about 3 times as many hip revisions as a normal orthopod. I left the job because we got tired of living in the city and now I bounce from shit job to shit job always missing surgery and dreaming about many nights. You just wait, scrubbing is a blast, and once you are gowned and gloved, the rules go out the window and you do what the doc needs you to do, regardless of whether you are "qualified" or not, it is all about if they trust you. I miss breaking the femoral head off when you reduce the joint for a hemi, what a crazy feeling.

How about a good James Patterson book? Often times he is able to construct a compound sentence.
