I think "Shattered" came from a fundraiser for Epidermolysis Bullosa. Both Eddie and the Mrs. are very involved with finding a cure for EB and healeb.org is sponsored by the Vitalogy Foundation. It's a different choice for a holiday single, but considering it was for a worthy cause, that's cool!
The "99" song is evidently very well known by everyone but me. At least I have heard of Jay-Z, even though I don't know anything about his music. God I'm old! :(
Well that two-track download was a complete letdown - one listen for each track followed by a quick deleting of both tracks. Hopefully, better singles will be released in the future. Jay Z - c'mon, surely there's other musicians out there to collaborate with that don't spew derogatory lyrics and are much less interested in self-aggrandizement. 'Back to enjoying the Lightning Bolt album. 'Safe Holiday season to everyone.

You are aware that 99 problems is not about a woman right?

I've accepted that most people here lump him in with 95% of the other shit rap music of today. To call Jay-Z shit is the exact same as calling PJ shit. You don't have to like him...I get that, but to give him no respect is mind-boggling. I really don't like the Rolling Stones but I have so much respect for them it's crazy. Just not my thing.
Get with the times! People lack respect these days
I don't think it's necessarily that people have to "get with the times". I'm 23 and I can't stand Jay Z/any of his "music" and I have a lot of friends my age who feel the same way.

I really don't get the negativity surrounding the Jay Z collaboration. I mean, I get that this is a rock band's forum but surely people are aware that there are other forms of music out there? There was nothing like this kind of reaction when PJ did a song with Cypress Hill over 20 years ago. We seem to be going backwards.
It's fine if you don't like Jay Z's music, that's your opinion and of course we're all entitled to one. But there's no need to attack him or the band over this. There are literally millions of people that have never heard of, or don't like, Pearl Jam's music. That doesn't make them or their musical taste any less valid than someone on here.
Jay Z is often listed near the top of the "most influential...", "greatest hip hop artists...", "top entrepreneur..." etc lists. I'm sure PJ were honoured that he would ask them to play at his festival and even more so that he would want to play on a track with them.

Jay Z is shit. If you like him that's 1 of your 99 problems. His album "Yeezus" is God awful! This is the worst Xmas single by far. Figures its on time :fp:

It was interesting to hear the 99-problems collaboration but would have been better with WMA too....
I can't see myself listening to 'Shattered' again....this is a Pearl Jam Fanclub single with no Pearl Jam music on it (except a WMA bassline) and no vocals from Ed except for backing on part of one track on which no other member of the band plays.....hmmmm, definitely not my favourite fanclub single.

i think it's pretty good. a collaboration and a joke. who knows what could be planned for a 'made in america' release. maybe there were issues with including the full performance, or it was held back for some other reason.
i have witnessed some performances. i have soaked up a lot of memories.
Eh, I listened yesterday and moved on. Not really worth getting too excited or upset about, at least to me. However, everyone has every right to be as disappointed as they find themselves today with this year's single.
Wow does this suck. I like Hova as much as the next guy, but I want to hear Pearl Jam when I get a Pearl Jam fan club single. And I love the song Shattered, but come on, this is stupid. Stupid I say!

It seems the band loved doing "99 Problems." How many times did Ed reference that (directly or indirectly) during this tour?
The Tripplehorn thing is kind of funny (albeit after seeing the Kimmel video), and yeah it might not be a side that I'll find myself playing more than once a year (the Andrews voice is Christmasy), but I think the band was just having fun with this and that's cool to me.

I know is considered being a "whiny baby" around here if you don't like something the band/10c did but I have to admit I'm pretty disappointed with this single.
The Jay-Z/PJ "99 Problems" is fine. I'm okay with what it is. It's Pearl Jam playing at Made In America and them doing a collab with Jay-Z is unique. Totally cool with it. Having W.M.A included would have been nice. Unfortunate it's not there as it would have been nice to hear it along with the transition into 99 but as a whole, it's night to have this little nugget from a show that looks like it won't ever be released.
The B-side however is an absolutely awful choice. It's an actress impersonating another actress in what sounds like a terrible open mic night. It's one thing for a band to release a fun/goofy song but this isn't even that. It's a friend of Ed's (presumably) doing an impersonation over a Stones tune. How this has any relation to Pearl Jam is lost on me. This was a private gig Ed played at and other than Tripplehorn's introduction and the "Shadoobie's," Ed is not even present on either side of this Christmas single. That's a huge disappointment.
With the new album just being released I don't understand why they wouldn't ride that wave and release a pair of demos or alternate takes or songs that never even made the album. Jack White released a 7" that had 3 demos from his Blunderbuss album as part of one of the TMR Vault packages shortly after his album was released. It's brilliant. Pearl Jam fans would love something like that.
I will say the art actually looks pretty nice for this 7"...so there's that.
My opinion is that it's prettyvstange that the Pearl Jam fan club is now sending out non-Pearl Jam Christmas singles. It's about as Pearl Jam as Mirror Ball is (but not good). The B-side is absolutely unlistenable. Side A is Jay-Z.
This the worst one ever. I don't even want it. I'll probably just give it to a record store for free. Maybe some Jay-Z fan will buy it.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
Will we ever get a new original unreleased song again?
Maybe... one day.... it does seem the band is keeping a lid on any studio tracks these days (possibly for lost dogs 2 one day?).
It's a shame. My favorite fan club singles are the ones with new studio tracks on them (or even Don't Believe in Christmas which they recorded the soundcheck.. which is close to studio...).
PJ has so much live content out there (as they release almost every show) that live singles aren't quite as interesting to me. I know this show didn't get released but I have heard it before (the videos were all over youtube).
I have to imagine at some point they'll find the time to put something new on a fan club single.... so many great fan club songs from years past:
1) Sonic Reducer (Cover)
2) Let Me Sleep
3) Don't Believe in Christmas
4) Driftin'
The list goes on
agreed.
i miss times when xmas single really meant some great new, unreleased music. puttin two tracks there where you can barely hear EV on just one of them, is a let down for me.
