I understand why Bon Iver would be mentioned here but I happen to enjoy it for the most part. The part I do not enjoy however, is the use of auto tune (at least that's what I think it is). It is not always present...if it was used on all songs, I wouldn't listen.

Some bands that may be polarizing that I don't think have been mentioned yet...what's the concensus?
The Cure - I like 'em
John Mayer - I like some songs and really dislike others
Depeche Mode - don't get it but didn't try very hard
The Replacements - tried and just couldn't do it
Fleet Foxes - great first album, not so great second album but I still like 'em

curious which Fleet Foxes album you're referring to here since they've had three.... Hopefully not Helplessness Blues?! That album is amazing!
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

Rush, I just can't get into the prog rock thing, never cared for it. For years I thought the lead singer was a girl

They only have 2. I don't count EP's as albums. Plus, when I got the first one on vinyl it was packaged with Sun Giant in it. I was referring to Helplessness Blues. It has good songs but as a whole it is nowhere near their debut.

I know. Every band/artist that Ed loves, I absolutely do NOT. Bruce, Neil (some stuff), Who, Ramones, the list goes on.

There was a second Unified Theory album? I only know of the first self titled one and loved it! More info please. Don't forget Dave Krusen on the drums!

They had 1 album and 1 EP

they eventually released their second album, Cinematic, on iTunes. from beemelon.com, a post dated April 23rd, 2007.

Here is the Cinematic cover (yummy!).

    cinematic.jpg

The album was excepted to be released a month ago but the guys had problem with iTunes so we have to wait a bit more… should be available sometime in May. Check out Unified Theory myspace for more information.

April 23rd update: the album is up on Rhapsody but for US residents only…

    here is the tracklist:

    1. 15 hits
    2. We don’t break
    3. Beneath the underdog
    4. Can’t let us down
    5. All in one
    6. 1st 50 feet
    7. Perfect qualities
    8. Oscar and me
    9. Anna
    10. One less

I know you are referring to Luma as the EP, but I can't find any track info on it. Do you know anything about it? is it just a handful of the tracks released on their first full length?

edit: all 4 songs on Luma have since been released; 3 on s/t, and 1 on Cinematic.

Response to a couple of things from the past several pages. First, someone asked what the opinion of Modest Mouse is. For me, I get it for the most part. I really enjoy several of their albums beginning to end but there are also albums of theirs that I cannot get through. This is a Long Drive is great start to finish but Sad Sappy is a rough listen for me. For a while they were in my top 5 bands list. Not so much anymore but they are still on the list of top 20 or so..
Modest Mouse and Pearl Jam are my 1A and 1B. Sad Sappy Sucker is simply not good. There's a few fun songs on it but the rest is painful. This is a Long Drive, Lonesome Crowded West, Moon and Antarctica are all amazing from start to finish. Now if Isaac Brock would get off his ass and finish the next album that'd be great.

I agree with you 100%. It would be nice to hear something new from them too.

I absolutely adore Modest Mouse. I really hope they release something soon; it's been way too long.

I only saw DM at Bridge School 2011, but had no desire to check him/them out more afterwards. Just very boring old people soft rock to me.

  • I'll never understand when people say you don't "get" something. It's like they're telling you that you're just unable to comprehend the music. It's okay to say you don't like something because you think it's shit. This is in no way aimed at the OP because so many people use the term and it's been bugging me for years.

Now, a few bands that I think are shit that others like are:
-Tool (pretentious ten minute songs with lyrics that believe they're deeper than that actually are)
-Led Zeppelin (Robert Plant ruins this band. He's arguably the biggest d-bag frontman ever. They have a few great songs, but I will never put them on the pedestal that others do)
-Death Grips (Bullshit mumbles disguised as something that's smart. White people who read Pitchfork LOVE to jerk off to these guys)
-Kanye West (Again, the white male, Pitchfork reader, version of a genius)
-The Black Keys (Fuck these guys)

Sorry if anyone here reads Pitchfork.

A lot of your comments are the type of things people say without giving enough thought to what they mean. For instance, what does "disguised as something smart" mean? They just wrote their lyrics, then sang (spoke) them, what exactly are they doing to disguise them as something smart? Also what makes Tool pretentious? It's an over used word and curious how it applies to Tool? Do long songs inherently make a band pretentious? And how does one rate how smart a band feels their lyrics are?

Kanye IS a genius, you just don't get him.

I agree with you about Zeppelin, and Pitchfork does suck.

What does any of this have to do with race or sex? Do no girls, black/asian/indian/etc people believe Kanye or death grips are genius or read pitchfork?

'Disguised as something that's smart' means they write about complete bullshit but fans eat it up because they believe it's genius. You, for example, prove my point.
The members of Tool makes the band pretentious. It's not an overused word when it's used in the correct context.
Kanye is not a genius. Einstein was a genius. Tesla was a genius. Newton was a genius. Kanye West writes pop songs with the help of about five people on each track. You whine about pretentious being an overused word when genius is the most overused word today. You just don't get what genius means.
Lastly, although I stand by my disliking for all of these bands/artists (using that word loosely), my comment was not meant to be taken seriously. You clearly gave it too much thought. Settle down; it's only words on a Pearl Jam forum.
