Top 25-30 bands of all time.
I don't know about that. But to each their own. That's the beauty of this thread. So far, not much hositility, except for the Robert Plant being a douchebag argument earlier.

When The Police walked away from being a band, they were essentially as big as any band in history has been at a given moment in time.

Regardless of the fact that some of their lesser known songs are absolutely amazing (Omega Man, Canary In A Coalmine, Regatta de Blanc, Does Everyone Stare, Secret Journey, Murder By Numbers just to name a few), their list of singles that continue to be played on the radio is huge, and as impressive as almost any band except maybe a few of the really big guns:

    So Lonely
    Walking On The Moon
    Every Breath You Take
    Roxanne
Don't Stand So Close To Me
    Message In A Bottle
    Spirits In The Material World
    Invisible Sun
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
De Do Do Do De Da Da Da
    Synchronicity II
    King of Pain
    Wrapped Around Your Finger
    Driven To Tears
    Can't Stand Losing You
This Bed's Too Big Without You

The lesser known songs are what make them one of the greats. A truly unique sound with very talented players.

    Born in the 50s
    Bring on the night
    Hungry for you
    Main in a suitcase
    Bombs away
    Too much information
    Tea in the sahara
    Miss Gradenko

Although synchronicity was the height of their popularity.

I think ghost in the machine is where they peaked as a band. That tour was phenomenal.

    Bands I don't get:
    Phish
    Arcade Fire
    Hold Steady
  • when I said I don't think Nirvana belong on the list of all time greats, I was really thinking of the short list. Like top 10 rock bands - similar to the other thread. If you open it up to 25-30, I'd probably buy it but they'd be low.

To me they have one masterpiece album (Nevermind), one great album (In Utero), one fairly mediocre album (Bleach), and collection of b-sides that runs the gamut. I just don't think it's enough. Although the MTV unplugged is pretty spectacular as well.

And Kurt did have those dreamy blue eyes....

To everyone saying Phish, give this a shot. It's a short jam...the whole thing clocks in at 7 mins.

What's there not to like about this?

Phish I definitely don't get...I wish my boy Wilds would weigh in here cause we argue about this one all the time. But it's just my tastes. I don't like extended jams all that much. Two of my least favorite PJ songs to hear live now are Rearviewmirror and Crazy Mary.

Still love Alive and Porch, though...so I guess I'm not very consistent, hahaha

    Re the Police:

Best songs were Can't Stand Losing You and The Bed's Too Big. Synchronicity was huge -- but so was Huey Lewis and the News. A lot of that early-mid '80s music has not aged well at all. I consider post-Ghost in the Machine Police to be unlistenable. So I cannot really see them on a "greatest" list, but that's just me.

  • I used to really like DMB, but it hasn't aged well at all. In fact, I can barely handle it now. Seen him live maybe 10 times over the years. At first I loved it...last time was maybe 6 years ago and the show felt tedious, so I don't think I'll go back. Still pulls a way hotter crowd than PJ does, though...

Pretty much my story. You've seen them a handful more times live than I have but I used to really get into it. But when Everyday came out I started to lose interest and by the next album I had lost all interest. I still "get" them though. Carter is a pretty badass drummer.

    Which was damn good.

The Police were awesome and I agreed with your previous post that they walked away from the scene as one of the biggest acts out there.

An awesome band with great music.

To the people saying they don't get arcade fire - could you elaborate as to why? Just curious.

I have said Arcade Fire. I think the music is average but they are being annointed and constantly discussed the way Radiohead has been in the past (another one I don't "get") and I just don't think the music is good enough to warrant that type of hype. I saw the Austin City Limits performance a while back and was not impressed. I have heard all four records and nothing stood out to me as incredible. That's just me. Anybody else want to weigh in with their opinion?

I fucking love Arcade Fire....in my top five bands easily. But so is Radiohead. It's no surprise to me that people in this thread are often listing them together. They are different from each other musically, but the media coverage around the two is similar and they seem to attract the same type of people.

In my opinion, they are making some of the most interesting music today, but I also love their sound. From the 1st album to the 4th, you can see a clear evolution...they take chances and push their music in different directions rather than try recapture what has already made them famous. I love Lightning Bolt, but I don't really see it taking many risks. At the same time, PJ is in a much different phase of their career than Arcade Fire is and I think that plays into it a lot.

I also have a huge amount of respect for how they got where they are. People love to call any mainstream act a "sellout", but Arcade Fire has done everything pretty independently. They've never been on a major label, and really have the "we are going to do whatever we want, and we will do it our way" kind of attitude that we've always appreciated PJ for. I can't think of another act who has never been signed/promoted/distributed by a major label that has gone on to achieve the status that Arcade Fire has.

I don't see how people could be bored by them, but that seems to be a common criticism. I think they aren't very accessible, and you definitely have to start with The Funeral, but there's a huuuuge payoff if you do become a fan. They are phenomenal live...tons of energy...it's never gonna come across on YouTube or TV, but it's like a big ass party.

Another common criticism is that they are pretentious. I totally see why people think that. They are artists of many mediums...they sing in French sometimes...they appeal to pretentious hipsters. They are definitely not straight up rock that would have mass appeal to PJ fans. No Mike McCready in that band, that's for sure.
