yep.. RHCP's first album was 1984.. Run DMC's Raising Hell was 1986.. Not quite ten years..

Not to mention RHCP and Run DMC have COMPLETELY different sounds. Run-DMC were hip hop; RHCP were rock with funk influence. RHCP pioneered nothing in the world of hip hop or rap/rock. That title belongs to, obviously, Aerosmith and Run-DMC with an honourable mention to Anthrax and Public Enemy.
I think you could give the honorable mention to Anthrax alone.. The "i'm The Man" EP came out long before the "bring The Noise" colaboration

I can understand if they aren't you're thing, they are obviously a different band than Pearl Jam… Just not sure why people don't get them. Their musicians are top notch, and Dave is an incredible song writer

Where do I begin? For starters, Dave Matthews sounds and writes like a pretentious douche bag. I find their music to be frustratingly bad with a large side of cheese. I know it's low to base your opinion of a band on their fans, being the band has no say in who listens to them, but hardcore fans of Dave Matthews Band are a different breed; yet, they're all the same. The only argument they throw at you as how 'talented' the band is; because talent and quality/originality always go hand in hand, I guess. That's what originally got me turned off from DMB in high school-the fans. They were such cocky assholes because they thought what they were listening to was beyond beautiful and anyone who didn't agree had terrible taste.
I'm not saying that you're one of those fans, it's just that every fan I knew in high school, and even college, was that type. It's not that I don't get Dave Matthews Band, I just find their music to be complete shit.

I'm sorry that you had bad experiences with people like that… I'm sure plenty of fan bases has those asshole type fans. As I said, I can understand if it's not people's style. I'm just surprised when people start to knock them. It leads me to believe that they've only listened to the hits and not their gem songs. Think about PJ. There are plenty of people that make fun of them, saying all their stuff sounds the same and make fun of Ed's voice… Now compare any PJ hit to songs like Inside Job, Strangest Tribe, ETC. There are so many incredible songs that are hidden. Same goes with DMB. I'd be shocked if you said their music is shit if you actually knew their amazing songs. They are too good, especially live, to be deemed as "shit". Their drummer is one of the best on the planet. They are a different animal live.

My bad, it wasn't 10 years. It was 2 years. So therefore RHCP sucks and Run DMC and Aerosmith should get credit for a music revolution?

I wasnt saying that at all.. I was just poking holes in the math.. RHCP broke some serious ground. I like them. BSSM is a great fucking album! I love One Hot Minute as well.. think it is overlooked and hated for some dumb reason.. Live, they are second to none.. If you need a good "pick me up", go see RHCP live!! especially in the day.. nothing like it..

as far as music revolution.. I think its like legos.. some pieces are small, some are big.. but the mother fucker just dont look right unless they are all there..

I love the band, but I have to admit... the fan base does have a 'sector' that kind of grates on me.

I don't let it interfere with my love for the music though.

Their music is much deeper than the casual observer might note.

Exactly how I feel. I'll be the first to admit, there's times where some of their concert goers piss me off. I'm the type of person that is locked in on the music. I don't even drink at concerts. I'm fully attentive waiting for the next note to come out of Dave's guitar. Their music really is incredible. It's a shame that so many people can't look past some of the dumb ass fans. To me, it's all about the music.

Just to try and show people what we are trying to talk about, give this a listen… Musical perfection IMO. One of the best lyrical songs Dave has ever written, and the jam is unbelievable.

For me, it's the sound of DM's voice. I have tried to like it, but just can't. It's not just DMB. I have tried to like Zeppelin, too, but can't get into Plant's voice. (same with the Police and Sting) If I don't like the sound of the singer's voice, I just stop trying to listen to the band's music.

  • Response to a couple of things from the past several pages. First, someone asked what the opinion of Modest Mouse is. For me, I get it for the most part. I really enjoy several of their albums beginning to end but there are also albums of theirs that I cannot get through. This is a Long Drive is great start to finish but Sad Sappy is a rough listen for me. For a while they were in my top 5 bands list. Not so much anymore but they are still on the list of top 20 or so.
Secondly, DMB. Someone previously said that if you knew the gems hidden on the albums you'd feel differently about them. I agree to a small extent. They do have some really good "unknown" songs. Seek Up, Dreaming Tree, and a few others that escape now (it is very early in the morning) are really great songs. I have listened to every album (including official live albums) multiple times. I was very into them for several years but just can't do it anymore. Not sure if it was over-exposure or they were just the right band for me for that time. The same thing happened with the RHCP and Foo Fighters for me. I just don't listen to them anymore and it is almost to the point that I wonder why I ever did. Looking back, I see DMB as more of a "starter" jam band and once I realized there were much better jam bands out there with much more diverse sounds and MUCH better guitar playing I jumped ship.

Great guitarist, great drummer. Unfortunately, I fuckin' hate Van Hagar alumni.
I guess Satch wanted to be in a straight r & r band. As for Chad, probably needed a break from Flea and Anthony.

I love Satriani, but never even gave Chickenfoot a chance. I just don't care about it.

I used to be a pretty big fan. I said earlier I've seen them maybe 10 times or so, and even like Everyday which a lot of people seem not to like. Dave and Tim played my school when I was in college and a buddy of mine and I slept outside to get tickets. But at some point I felt like they failed to evolve, and their shows became boring. I stopped listening after Busted Stuff (although "Big Eyed Fish" is still a great song), and my last show was the Bridge School w/ PJ and Trent Reznor. The second night I was so tired of them I left in the middle.

When I hear their older stuff now, it hasn't aged well to my ears. Like Alanis Morissette, it sounds super dated to me and serves more to remind me of a specific era than anything else.

  • Prince. Phenomenal guitar player, but it's never been for me. Good Super Bowl halftime show, though, I'll give him that.

  • Some bands that may be polarizing that I don't think have been mentioned yet...what's the concensus?
The Cure - I like 'em
John Mayer - I like some songs and really dislike others
Depeche Mode - don't get it but didn't try very hard
The Replacements - tried and just couldn't do it
Fleet Foxes - great first album, not so great second album but I still like 'em

There are several bands/artists like that for me, that others around here seem to like (or at least some) but I just can't seem to get into:

    U2
    Nine Inch Nails
    Incubus
    Tool
    Kings of Leon
    Bruce Springsteen
    DMB
    Phish

from the top of my head, but there must be more...

I can understand that. As I said, I'm not one of those abrasive DMB fans… The only time I will get defensive is when people actually knock the band and think they suck. There's a huge difference between saying "A band sucks, they are over rated, talentless, ETC" or saying "I can't get into them, I don't like his voice, they aren't for me, ETC". I always give credit where it's due. I'm a huge music fan, so event if I don't like the sound of a band, if I can hear the talent, I tip my cap and give the credit where it's due. Unfourtenetly, A lot of people tend to like to bash and hate on DMB for some reason, and I never understood why so much hate for an obviously talented and positive band. BTW, I was the same way with Zeppelin. I still to this day don't like Plant's voice. I got to like them a little bit more over the years because I found some really great songs that I didn't even knew existed. I felt the same could happen to other people with DMB. Most people just judge by the hits. They have so much great material that the casual radio listener would never have a clue about. That's why I always check out albums and some live footage before I judge a band.
