Love that this thread is 23 pages and counting. Obviously DMB has jumped the shark. Have seen Foos four times and completely agree with consensus--great live band yet with all of 4-5 good/great songs. Arcade Fire was great,Reflektor is awful. To throw the cat in amongst the pigeons, Band of Horses has one half-decent song and MudHoney has 1-2. Comparing either opening act to Bruce or The National is crazy sacrilege IMO..

I've tried to get into the National several times and can't...to me every song sounds similar and somewhat uninspired. They are fine, but a lot of people hold them in very high regard, so I guess I don't "get" them.

I haven't even found the 1-2 good songs from Mudhoney, so I guess I don't get them either.

You won't regret it. If I was trying to get someone into them I would say start out with The Moon & Antarctica or The Lonesome Crowded West.

Still curious as to why so many people are against the Foo Fighters?

Thanks I'm downloading The Lonesome Crowded West now.

Re: Foos, I agree w/ what others have said, and I certainly don't hate them, do love a few songs, just find them not very diverse, not very unique, and rather inconsistent.
I think singer's voices also matter a lot to me-- not that they have to have gorgeous voices but that they need voices that can directly convey emotions both intense and subtle. I just don't see that Dave Grohl has much going on in that department.

Can someone who likes The National make a recommendation where to start with them?

I used to be a huge Foo Fighters fan, but now I find them boring. Even at the peak of my fandom, I never enjoyed a full album. It was always just a select few songs from each. They still have plenty of songs that I really like, but I'm starting to understand what people have against them.

Their songs come off as empty radio rock drivel. They're not interesting and Dave doesn't have much to say. Also, his voice is forced and so overproduced that it doesn't relay any real emotion or make me feel anything. They're just a few dudes (or really just Dave) making generic rock songs. Nothing inherently wrong with that but exactly the type of band that makes me wonder how so many people can like them so much.

Hehe, exactly how I felt about Foos. Somewhere I posted that "They have a boy-band feel", but you happened to state it in a more formal, appropriate way. :);)
What's your part, who you are?

Agreed. There is too much out there to intentionally hold yourself back. And I agree with the above statements about the FooFighters. Very generic.

I'd start with "Boxer" by The National.

    No.

Disagree strongly with both of these statements so... I guess nothing is obvious, eh?

  • I never got Spinal Tap. I only ever saw the one documentary they did about them. They don't seem serious about their music and I've never heard any of their songs on the radio?? Why do so many people rave about them??

  • I'm NOT saying that these bands aren't talented, but the following don't hold my attention:

Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Dave Matthews, Foo Fighters, Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas.

There are more, but I can't think of them right now.

I will go out on a limb and say what you wouldn't. Black Eyed Peas suck. They are not talented. Music made for commercials. Just not my thing. I would think I'm not alone on this.

  • This is more or less a bump but wanted to add Vampire Weekend to the discussion. I will say that I haven't heard their latest but have heard the first two and they are not terrible but not sure I get the hype. I still have to hear the new record though. Any thoughts?

I'm glad I'm not the only one to give this answer. I don't dislike Nirvana but I've never felt strongly compelled to listen to more than what I've heard.

You may not "get" them, but they are far from horrible. Pound for pound they are more talented than almost every band listed in this thread.
I've only heard their album Hoist, which has a few good tunes on it, but I really like "Down with Disease".

Radiohead - I have tried so many times to like this band....maybe someday
I haven't tried, but every song I've heard besides "Creep" makes me want to stop listening.

To some of you saying DMB, I'm curious to hear you're reasoning why? I'm not even just asking because they are my favorite band… Just curious as to why you don't get them. I can understand if they aren't you're thing, they are obviously a different band than Pearl Jam… Just not sure why people don't get them. Their musicians are top notch, and Dave is an incredible song writer

Kind of forgot about this thread but I'll repeat what I posted a few pages back.

I saw them live and while I agree they are great musicians and the songs were tight, they are plain vanilla.

They played a song that would have to be equivalent to a PJ song like Inside Job and I was floored that literally 60% of the audience was not even paying attention. I saw them at Klipsch outdoor music center in Noblesville, IN and was in an elevated VIP section at the back of the covered pavillion so I had a great view of the crowd.

I am not a fan but liked a few of their songs that I heard from the radio (except Ants go Marching...what an absolutely stupid tune) but this song they played live was one that I would probably consider one of the best DMB songs I've ever heard. And as I said at least 60% of the audience was just socializing and not paying attention.

That I ran into a bunch of my high school daughter's friends there tells me all I need to know about DMB.
