• I absolutely adore Modest Mouse. I really hope they release something soon; it's been way too long.
met isaac brock twice...nice both times...love seeing em live...long drive is definitely my favorite album, dramamine, ohio, custom concern, so many great songs...he's a genius, really carrying the torch for the pacific northwest, well when he's writing songs, hopefully we get some more soon. my friend told me to check out built to spill cuz they sound similar, glad i did...i've been really getting into dinosaur jr in last few years two...i really like j mascis solo album as well. also LOVE LOVE LOVE ELLIOTT SMITH...that guy is brilliant, such a shame he's gone. i like a The Smiths a lot too, i know some people cant stand Morrissey. i dont care for journey, yes, 80s hair metal...iron maiden is ok at times but...ya its tough to say who i really dislike..Country, i dont like Country, other than maybe Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, if ya call em country...i dont like bon jovi, neil diamond, and lastly Nickelback sucks!
Built to Spill and Dinosaur Jr. are awesome. I have been getting into them in the last few years also. I saw Built to Spill open for Kings of Leon a couple of years back and I was one of probably 20 people in the whole venue that seemed to be enjoying it (stupid soccer mom's, present company excluded, of course). But Dinosaur Jr. completely blew me away. Was not expecting them to be so good. I figured I'd like a few songs here and there but they really do have more than 3 solid albums beginning to end. I am at work so I don't have the examples.

I will have to queue that one up on the iPod and give it a listen start to finish. Thanks for the update.

Back on topic for the thread though...I have previously mentioned Arcade Fire being one band I just don't "get" and just wanted to follow up and say I tried on the new album, Reflektor. I couldn't even make it through three songs. It's just not for me. I don't begrudge anybody who likes 'em but it is just painful for me.

i think that's really part of it too. some music suits certain people's tastes, some just doesn't...no matter what some people just aren't going to like certain things...although it still bugs me when im at work and people i work with just dont know pearl jam, nirvana, etc or even care too. to me they mean so much. so sometimes i guess i take it personal. it's almost like an insult on those bands is an insult on family or something...runs deep.

Gotta start with The Funeral if you want to give Arcade Fire a try. Don't know if that will do it for you either, but starting with Reflektor is like starting in the middle of a book

I've heard the first three beginning to end...the latest one I just couldn't. The only one I could tolerate was The Suburbs and even then, some of the songs were just unlistenable for me.

Fair enough...can't argue with anyone who gave them an honest shot!

Thanks for not jumping all over me about it. Some around here are not so kind. That was the purpose of the thread was just an honest discussion.

Haha...I'm not personally invested in Arcade Fire, so it's okay with me if you don't like them! This thread has been great...20+ pages and no thread-derailing antics

I'm personally invested, but my feelings aren't hurt because someone doesn't like them, and I really liked this thread so I'm sneakily trying to bump it to see more opinions from others on bands.

I‘ll give it an inconspicuos bump too and also say I agree that this thread has made for some really great reading and discussion.

• Well I'll justify adding my two cents by knowing at least I'm also bumping

-I both get and don't get how anyone could put Nirvana on this list. I agree with BinFrog's eloquent defense of the importance of their place in history regardless of whether some other band could have easily been the one; I agree with the point too about Kurt's extraordinary gift for melody and widespread appeal as reasons worth considering why they *were* the one; I agree with the post about how perhaps nothing can have quite that power for you if you got to know it past teens-20s; and I LOVE them. Yet ultimately I think it's also true that we have too little from them to know just how good they (and Kurt in particular) were. Short list for greatest? All depends on what they would have done in their next 3-5 albums.
-to those who've said Led Zep: I am reeling between vomiting and going on a shooting rampage
-the only thing more ridiculous than that is the Beatles, which is so silly I can't even bother being upset
-Agree with: U2, Radiohead, (hate to say it but) The Who
-Pretty sure I would agree with (but haven't maybe given enough of a try): DMB, Coldplay (didn't really know anyone liked them THAT much, haven't ever known anyone who liked them), Foo Fighters
-Love Arcade Fire, MMJ, KOL
-And thanks for some ideas of who to check out next! Modest Mouse I think

You won't regret it. If I was trying to get someone into them I would say start out with The Moon & Antarctica or The Lonesome Crowded West.

Still curious as to why so many people are against the Foo Fighters?

I used to be a huge Foo Fighters fan, but now I find them boring. Even at the peak of my fandom, I never enjoyed a full album. It was always just a select few songs from each. They still have plenty of songs that I really like, but I'm starting to understand what people have against them.

The foos are a good band but I tire of their sound quickly. Pearl Jam has soured me on most other good bands.

I could go all day but will keep it to 1

DMB

Honestly cannot say I have ever listened to them without attempting to procreate with the opposite sex.

Thanks for getting me laid Dave, but take that dump already. 22 years of constipation is good for no one (ask Bruce)

That said Carter Beauford is a fantastic musician. Laid the beat to many a High School and College romp. Living in Richmond and listening to old Secrets stuff he is really top draw even though the rest sounds like the intro to Sports Center in 1984

Love that this thread is 23 pages and counting. Obviously DMB has jumped the shark. Have seen Foos four times and completely agree with consensus--great live band yet with all of 4-5 good/great songs. Arcade Fire was great,Reflektor is awful. To throw the cat in amongst the pigeons, Band of Horses has one half-decent song and MudHoney has 1-2. Comparing either opening act to Bruce or The National is crazy sacrilege IMO..

Their songs come off as empty radio rock drivel. They're not interesting and Dave doesn't have much to say. Also, his voice is forced and so overproduced that it doesn't relay any real emotion or make me feel anything. They're just a few dudes (or really just Dave) making generic rock songs. Nothing inherently wrong with that but exactly the type of band that makes me wonder how so many people can like them so much.
