Having soaked up this song I can only say that it is a truly beautiful song.

There seems to be a certain musical maturity that is coming through and I am loving it 8-)

    Thank you Pearl Jam.

I think the line 'send you into the arms of another man' was based upon Ed's death. That's why he is waiting when she stays around(lives). The whole song is coming to grips with his own inevitable death and what he now has to lose as compared to when he was younger and hardly gave a shit.
I think it's definitely ANOTHER song about love and impending death.

"It’s a fragile thing, this life we lead, if I think too much, I can get over-
Whelmed by the grace, by which we live our lives with death over our shoulders
Want you to know, that should I go, I always loved you"

I thing the lyrics are fairly implicit, as lyrics go (not that people shouldn't interpret them as they see fit). Ed seems to think about his own death a lot....

  • Slept on it and still really don't like the song.
I was hoping for weirder songs that play with sounds and different time signatures.
I get the passionate message but the delivery lacks the passion the words deserve and the music is very bothersome to me in it's unoriginal and overbuilt over-polished sound, it touches on genres and styles of music I just don't get into, I personally don't see maturity in it I see complacency. I am still looking forward to the rest of the album and just because I am not into this song doesn't mean I think it's the end for Pearl Jam or anything ridiculous like that. I can respect that other people like it and I can respect that if this is what the band wants to do its what they will do. We'll just have to agree to disagree on the direction and quality of this one.

P.S. I prefer McHendrix not McHalen.

"Come take my hand, and let yourself rely.
Don't hold your breath, don't close your eyes.
I've learned to breath and I've learned to fly.
I've learned to see and I know I'm going higher."
  • Mortality is definitely something I think about, and no doubt others, as I draw closer to 50. I mean, let's get real, if we have a good 20-30 years after 50 we'll be VERY lucky. We've lived the majority of our lives already, so introspection and the resulting clarity and comfort in our own emotions is more evident. This song represents that for me. I can relate to it, actually feel/understand what he means. Glorious feels for this song.

Gotta agree with you. I haven't read all the lyrics but some of what I've heard, it is pretty dark sounding and serious, but being packaged up in this power ballad bloated feel of the music just loses it all for me. Unoriginal is a great word to describe it.

Yeah, it's definitely not innovative or creative. Anyone who says it is either of those two things, whatever else they have to say about it that's positive, is deluding themselves. The only thing innovative or creative about this song is that it's a massive departure from the innovation and creativity that we have seen from PJ in the past, right up to Avocado.

I think he (also) said it was possibly the best song they've ever written, period. :? You don't have to dislike this song to think that that is a pretty kooky thing for him to say. Makes me wonder where in the fuck his head is at.

yeah, he's starting to really turn me off. when I recently re-read PJ20, he was talking to Ed about how Better Man was going to be a hit and all that, and when that turned Ed off, he started saying this is "our" best song. OUR? He's not in the fucking band. He's the producer. How does he get to assume ownership of anything this band created?

Creativity is a subjective norm. But innovative? Sirens may not be the most innovative song, but lets face it ATW, Half Full (build on classic bluessy chords), Come Back (see Half Full), Rival ( see Half Full), Smile and numerous others aren't either. Thinking that Sirens is a "massive departure from the innovation and creativity that we have seen from PJ in the past, right up to Avocado" - well, that is delusional.

I think the haters need to chill and wait until they hear Sirens in the context of the entire album.

I didn't mean every song on their first 8 albums. What my comment really meant was that that general level of innovation disappeared for Backspacer, and the lack of innovation shows in this song too. I think MYM is somewhat innovative, and I haven't heard half of the new album yet. Maybe there is some innovation in there somewhere.

I think Pendelum, Infallible, My Fathers Son may hold some surprises. What I was railing against though was this comment in your post: Anyone who says it is either of those two things, whatever else they have to say about it that's positive, is deluding themselves. In this train of though saying anything bad is as equally delusional as saying something good, no? Or do you think both opinions can go exist on equal footing?

I truly don't see how anyone could hear this song and truthfully call it innovative unless they are kidding themselves. There is nothing whatsoever about this song that hasn't been heard before besides that it's PJ doing an 80s rock ballad.
