Attending Gold Coast, will be my 5th PJ show. The guys have never played Gold Coast before, the last show on Australian soil was in Brisbane. Fingers crossed we're in for something more special than usual! Good work to original thread poster listing accommodation recommendations! Think I'll be booking mine within 2-3 weeks
Questions for Sydney!!!
Since I won't have much time in Sydney for sight seeing related activities I'm going to attempt to do just highlights. It seems like the park where BDO is being held is somewhat outside of Sydney (or downtown Sydney). And then the airport seems to be just somewhere else entirely. SO, would it make more sense to stay in Sydney or North Sydney and then take the train to the park for BDO in the afternoon (just assume I will be happy watching PJ from the back of a crowd), or should I stay closer to the park and then commute into Sydney for sightseeing? It seems like this should be a no brainer, but I read that the trains stop running around midnight and I don't expect it to be easy to get back after the show. What with the bogans and all.
2nd, there's bridge in NY called the Hell Gate Bridge. According to Wikipedia the Sydney Harbor Bridge was based on it's design. Here's a photo I took around 10 years ago of the Hell Gate Bridge:
So, I really want to get a great photo from a reasonable/similar distance (obviously without the snow). Any suggestions for where I can take a great photo from? Does anyone know if pedestrians are allowed to walk across thins bridge?
I've got myself a ticket for Perth! Fingers crossed I get the Monday off work so I can go. I have only given in to the fact that I am going to BDO, will be devo if I can't make it because of work!

It would probably be best to stay in the city, instead of in North Sydney. I used to work in North Sydney and it is a nice area, but it would probably be a bit quiet on the weekends, because it is more of an area for office-workers, etc.
Yes pedestrians can walk across the harbour bridge and you can even book in to do a bridge climb http://www.bridgeclimb.com/.
You could visit Manly and catch a ferry to Circular Quay (Quay is pronounced as "Key" ) and take pictures from the ferry. This isn't a great photo or anything, but it was one that I took on the ferry years ago, just to give you an idea of the view of the bridge from the ferry.
This isn't my photo, but this is Circular Quay where the ferry from Manly would dock. On the right in the background you can see the opera house is only a short walk away.
Hope this helps , if you have any questions ask away .

I am in need of some help I bought a ticket in the pre-sale (BDO members) for Sydney night 2 and I am coming from New Zealand and in all my excitement I didn't check the dates correctly and my son's first day of school for the year is 27th january!!!! So I am needing to sell the ticket I am happy with face value or cheaper as I just plain can not go I will try for tickets in the Gold coast public sale.
the ticket is an E ticket and I can email the link as soon as needed.
Just read PJ will be playing a full set list at BDO's, so we won't be getting the typical short festival sets like other bands.

Can anyone suggest something for new years in Auckland? I know there are fireworks, but I can't really find any event listings :-\
Event listings for NYE won't be available yet, look later in the year like November into early December'ish. The fireworks go off the Sky Tower which is downtown so being downtown for NYE isn't a good place to see them + downtown generally sux NYE. I've not been big on going out on NYE for years now, bbq at a friend's is more my NYE trip, but I think places down Ponsonby Rd still know how to party + you can see the Sky Tower fireworks from there. That's my input for now anyway.
Meanwhileeeeeee....... Micheyb21 from here was recently here in Auckland & has given me some info to pass on about staying here:
"Tell peeps not to stay at Base Hostel it's crap fyi! I would never stay there again. Base is a running joke with all backpackers that it's easily the worst hostel in NZ - its dirty and the beds are terrible. Nomads is better as is The Fat Camel and there are 2 YHA hostels on Queen Street too. If people want to stay off Queen then Verandahs is awesome as is Ponsonby Backpackers. Base is fine for the younger ones who don't mind the party atmosphere and beds but I would advise to stay there as last resort.
Tell people if they want non party places to check out bbh.co.nz which has smaller independent hostels throughout the city - don't book through the site just contact hostel directly."
So, Jodie, can you take Base off your recommendation info at the top of the thread & keep Nomads The Fat Camel & add the 2x YHA hostels?

You going to be in Auckland that early?
Yea I really don't have anywhere else to be so I'm leaving the day after xmas, spending 2 nights in Honolulu before landing in Auckland the day before New Years. I'm going to tour NZ until the first BDO. I haven't worked out a full itinerary but it's a rare opportunity to spend New Years there, and a comprehensive tour would be nice. I'm not backpacking though, I'm travelling light but not doing the whole hostel/backpacker bus thing.
Thanks for the tip Morello, I'll keep in mind to get out of the city and find a nice viewing spot, maybe an island or something. I def don't wanna get stuck in some shithole surrounded by bogans! Wait, are there bogans in NZ or is that an Oz only thing?

There are definitely bogans in NZ, not so much downtown Auckland, that's more white trash, but there are definitely bogans here.
You won't see the fireworks from one of the islands here, maybe from Waiheke but not sure about that. You would see them really well from Devonport(suburb across the harbour from downtown Auckland) but there wouldn't be much else to do there. I would honestly suggest Ponsonby for your NYE. Plenty of great bars & if you work it right you'll be able to see the fireworks from them, or out on the street.
As for spending some time travelling between NYE & BDO, you could do some great sight-seeing. I'd suggest sticking with the North Island probably, you could easily do Northland(including Cape Reinga right up the top of NZ) + Coromandel(lots of lovely beaches so January = perfect time to be there, Feb hotter but Jan nice too) + Rotorua(thermal activity, bubbling mud, geysers etc). You'd want the longest amount of time in the Coromandel as it's the largest area.
