I don't think we would be looking at ways to keep chainsaws out of people's hands :?
but I would think we would be much more proactive for the mentally ill and in putting criminals
away, not giving them revolving prison door.
But then I wonder constantly why there is not more noise and action involving these solutions.
Becuase those solutions are unrealistic can you explain how would you go about getting help for all the mentally ill people ? ..

mental illness isn't something many people get treated for. a VERY small percentage do. out of fear of the stigma. you can't force people to get help, and even if you could, you can't give every single person in america a psych evaluation. even if it were free, people wouldn't go. trust me on this.

Gun Purchase Background Check
Q: Are you mental? (Please, circle one)
Yes - No gun for you
No - Thank you for your patronage
do you have any ideas that would.............WAIT !!! are medical records checked when the formes are mailed/net to buy a gun ? might be the next move in that direction, it wouldn't be a 100% but it would be some help I would think.

Sir, that is an excellent idea! A more in depth background check of each person looking to purchase a firearm that lowers the risk of a gun getting into the hands of someone who is mentally unstable. That these checks should be in place at the sale point of every gun transaction, whether from a licensed gun shop, a licensed gun dealer or a private party exchange... just like the paper work that follows your car when you sell it on Craig's List.
I wonder who would be against such a reasonable procedure. Only a nut, I guess.

My understanding is that one of the possible bills to be debated about background checks would require that anyone who had undergone required treatment for a mental illness be denied a gun. Perhaps because of a criminal charge? I haven't had time to fully check out the proposed bill just heard the particulars on NPR this morning.
I still fail to understand how background checks infringe on the right to a gun. The 2nd never says anything about specifics, only that you can have a gun, not what type or how much ammunition nor whether you're responsible or capable of adequately handling said weapon (meaning your mentally unhinged). Sorry but when I have friends and family that go on and on about their right to a gun then fail to practice safe gun procedures then I find it difficult to believe the real problem is the right to a gun and more likely some other motivation - I won't expound on what I think the real problem is for some.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

The Amendments are purposely vague to be able to fit into changing times by interpretaing the basic intent of the amendment. In 1775, it was a good thing to have a citizen Army of landowners that understood strategic and tactical warfare in order to fend off invading foriegn armies. That is the 'Well-Regulate' part of the 2nd Amendment. By today's standards, the interpretation is taken to the creation of the U.S. Army or the formation of militias in the mountains of Montana. But, can't al Qaeda also be considered to be a well-regulated, armed militia? Shouldn't they have the same rights... as long as they are made up of U.S. citizens?
I'm hoping, not.

I for one would not be aginst a deeper back ground check to the one that is already in place,it seems that a medical/mental check would already be in place.
It was five minutes before closing and the owner was re-stocking beer, when investigators say 34-year-old Charles Steele burst in with a sawed off shotgun and demanded all the cash from the register. I thought it was against the law to have a sawed off shotgun? I guess criminals don't follow the gun control laws? Emoticon.
"That's the second time I've shot a gun ever in my life and I couldn't believe that I hit him," said the owner. You should have practiced the safe and effective use of your firearm, you wouldn't have just "hit" him.
Deputies say Steele admitted he robbed the store out of desperation, because he lost his job a couple weeks ago. Clearly Obama's fault.
The sheriff said when deputies searched Steele's home, they found the rifle he used and all the money he stole. So was it a rifle or a sawed off shotgun?
He'll be arrested for robbery first degree when he's released from USA Medical Center, likely in a few days.
Local 15 asked Sheriff Cochran if any charges would be brought against the store owner, since he shot as the suspect was leaving.
The sheriff said that's not likely because the owner was defending his life and his property and by law he has a right to do so. WOOT!

"One of the witnesses had a gun with him, apparently he's carrying his gun legally, and he intervened… He drew his weapon. He did not have to use it, obviously, but that appeared to help stop the action at the time," said Christiansen.

A southern Kentucky coroner says the mother of a 2-year-old girl fatally shot by her 5-year-old brother had just stepped away from the children when the shooting occurred.
Cumberland County Coroner Gary White tells WKYT-TV that the mother said she had been outside on a porch for "no more than three minutes."
"It's a Crickett," White told the Lexington Herald Leader. "It's a little rifle for a kid….The little boy's used to shooting the little gun."
He continued, "Just one of those crazy accidents."
Kentucky State Police say the girl was shot Tuesday afternoon in Cumberland County and was later pronounced dead.
