fetuses are in the womb. not alive independent of the mother. again, does not compare.

let's talk about the figures in the post i made. only 230 justifiable homicides in 2010. kinda destroys your argument of self defense, doesn't it?

Just to keep the facts straight, isn't it fetuses that are killed- not babies?

Do chicken eggs apply to the number?
I read a statistic that 87.9993 % of statistics are made up.

There are no sources or regulations I find to be reliable or accurate when looking up statistics for anything.
    Maybe an Almanac.

But an article written about a a gun owner that stops a rampage, I can trust. There were witnesses.

Wife accidentally kills husband during gun lesson: Police

    David Chang, NBCPhiladelphia.com

A fun night for a Pennsylvania couple turned deadly after police say the woman accidentally shot and killed her husband.

On Friday, around 9 p.m., police say Michael Wanko, 43, and Michele Wanko, 42, were “casually drinking” vodka and lemonade together inside their home on West Roland Road in Parkside, Penn. Around 3:30 a.m., police say the couple went into their basement so that Michael could show his wife how to use a semiautomatic pistol. The couple went into a work room where several weapons were kept inside a safe.
“He took several of the weapons out, handguns and was demonstrating to her how the weapon worked as far as taking the magazine out, making sure it was safe, and how to pull the slide back,” said Parkside Police Chief John Egan.

As Michael reached into a safe to grab a gun, police say Michele picked up another gun and pulled the slide back, just as her husband had instructed her.
“When she let go of the slide, the weapon went off,” said Chief Egan.

Michael was struck in the upper chest. At the time, police say, the couple’s 2-year-old and 5-year-old sons were sleeping upstairs. Police say the 5-year-old was awakened by his mother’s frantic screams as she called 911.
Police arrived at the home around 4 a.m. Michael was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Michele was charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and possessing an instrument of crime. She was processed at the Chester City Jail and released on $250,000 unsecured bail. Her two children are currently staying with relatives.

Police say the gun Michele used was turned over to the Delaware County ballistics unit where investigators would “ascertain if the weapon malfunctioned or if it operated properly.”

Neighbors described the Wanko family as “nice people” who always did things with their children and were well respected throughout the neighborhood. Chief Egan says police were called to their home a year ago for a domestic dispute but that it was only “a shouting match between the two.” No one was charged in that incident.

Husband accidentally shoots himself and wife during gun safety class

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... class.html

A man and his wife are recovering after he accidentally shot them both during a firearms safety class.

Michael L. Deel, 54, shot himself in the hand with a .45-caliber handgun during the class in the small town of Bedford, Virginia, according to the sheriff's department.

The bullet also struck his wife, Michelle, 49, in the leg as she was sitting beside him.

The incident occurred on Saturday during a firearms safety class at a residence in the neighborhood.
The instructor, Thomas Starke, told police he'd left the room and then heard a shot.

The Deels were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Michael Deel says the shooting was a 'stupid accident'.

  • Fort Lewis Army Wife Kills Husband During Gun Lesson

    http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=7326252

As he prepared to deploy to Afghanistan for his third tour of duty, Fort Lewis Army Sgt. Eric Autio wanted to make sure his new bride knew how to use the couple's gun so she'd be safe while he was away.

But in what appears to be a tragic accident, Autio was shot in the head and killed Sunday as he stood in their Olympia, Wash., home in front of the loaded gun his wife had pointed at him, police said. She called 911 and tried to resuscitate him but it was too late.

"They found Eric in the garage with a gunshot wound to the head -- he was obviously deceased -- and a very distraught wife," Thurston County Sheriff's Office Lt. Chris Mealy told ABCNews.com.

The gun that killed Autio was his own non-military issue, legally registered Glock, officials said. Police have not officially ruled the shooting accidental but Mealy said investigators are leaning that way. An autopsy, scheduled for Tuesday, and further interviews will yield more information, he said.

"He was trying to teach her to become acquainted with it and how to shoot," said Mealy, who did not release the wife's name. Autio was shot, he added, "right smack dab in the front part of the head."

A Fort Lewis spokesman had no comment today.

Peter Hamm, communications director for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, told ABCNews.com that while Autio's death was tragic, "unfortunately, it was not unique."

"In terms of people handing other people firearms in a casual way and talking about the firearms, it happens a lot," he said.

"These things are extraordinarily dangerous," Hamm said. "You've got to treat a firearm like a bomb that could go off at any moment."

According to Centers for Disease Control findings provided by the Brady Campaign, 789 Americans were shot to death accidentally in 2005, the most recent year for which statistics are available. There were 14,678 accidental gunshot injuries that same year.

Mealy said the couple, both 25 and married since January, had been out with family and friends Saturday night, drinking alcohol, but an "appropriate" amount. It was unclear whether alcohol played any role in the shooting around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Mealy said Autio's wife submitted to a blood test, but those results have not yet been analyzed.

    Preparing for Deployment

Autio had been and still was an enthusiastic soldier who followed his stepfather and two older brothers into the Army, his stepfather, Richard Glenn, told ABCNews.com. He had already been deployed twice to Iraq, returning home most recently in October.

But this deployment -- scheduled for June, this time to Afghanistan -- was different. This time he was a husband who was nervous about leaving his bride alone in a new city, torn between his duty to his country and his new marriage.

"He was very concerned with her safety, all the violence that goes on in the U.S. now," Glenn said from his home in Kansas. "They were living in a big city."

Glenn said the shooting was purely an accident that took away the man he had raised since Autio was 4 years old.

"He enjoyed life. He was a very energetic young man," Glenn said. "He put his whole soul into what he was doing."

Glenn said Autio had been stationed at Fort Lewis for a little more than a year after having been transferred from Fort Bragg, N.C., where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne.

"He was very, very patriotic," Glenn said. "He just liked the idea of serving your country."

Glenn said Autio and his wife had met in high school when she was best friends with Autio's sister. They began dating in 2004, he said, three years after they graduated from high school.

Mealy said no charges have been filed in Autio's death and his wife is being cared for by the Army. "She's being cooperative," he said. "She's very, very upset and distraught."

Neighbor Mary Moore told ABC affiliate KOMO that she was awakened by the gunshot Sunday morning. She had been planning to have the couple over for dinner that evening.

"I've been crying most of the day," she told KOMO. "They were so young. They were so young. They were very nice."

Soldier's Death Tragic but Maybe Not Unique

Mealy said this kind of fatality is rare for his office. When deputies respond to accidental shootings, he said, they typically result in either superficial injuries or none at all.

But Hamm of the Brady Campaign noted that guns in the home are at least a dozen times more likely to be used to injure someone in that home.

"When you point a firearm at another human being, there are lots of ways terrible things can happen," Hamm said.

Because reported data on firearm ownership varies from state to state, it is unclear how many Americans legally own guns, Hamm said. But there are an estimated 250 million firearms owned by civilians in the United States, he said.

The glock, he said, is a "fairly common" semi-automatic weapon, popular because it's reasonably priced and well-marketed.

Autio's death is the latest tragedy for Fort Lewis, the third-largest Army base in the country with about 30,000 soldiers and another 4,000 deployed.

One of its soldiers was found shot on base in the head April 7 and died a short time later. Army officials have not released his name or the details of that soldier's death.

Last month, military officials charged a soldier with involuntary manslaughter and several drug charges after a 16-year-old girl died in his barracks and another teenager was found unconscious after a night of apparent drug use.

In February, Fort Lewis announced the death of 41-year-old Staff Sgt. Sean D. Diamond, who was killed by an improvised explosive device in Iraq.

Also in February, according to various Seattle-area media reports, three Fort Lewis-based soldiers were arrested on assault and robbery charges in recent weeks in connection with two incidents when University of Washington students were robbed at gunpoint and assaulted.

In January, a Fort Lewis sergeant was charged with kidnapping, raping and torturing two women after he was reported AWOL. And in November, a sergeant was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of his friend after a day of drinking. The medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide, according to the News Tribune.

  • Boy, 4, accidentally kills officer’s wife after picking up deputy’s loaded gun off bed

    http://www.leaderpost.com/news/accident ... story.html

NASHVILLE — Authorities say a 4-year-old boy grabbed a loaded gun at a family cookout and accidentally shot and killed the wife of a Tennessee sheriff’s deputy.

Investigators say Wilson County Deputy Daniel Fanning on Saturday was showing his weapons to a relative in a bedroom of his home when the toddler came in and picked up a gun off the bed. Sheriff Robert Bryan says the weapon discharged, hitting 48-year-old Josephine Fanning.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. The child is not related to her or her husband.

Bryan says the shooting was a terrible accident and that within seconds of Fanning placing the gun on the bed, the toddler picked it up.

The gun was not Fanning’s service weapon and the sheriff says the deputy’s weapons are normally stored in a safe.

also just out of a personal curiosity, do you anti gun people believe that if guns were magically banned that those tens of thousands of people that killed themselves wouldn't have? do you believe that a person is going to not kill themselves because they can't find access to a gun?

    no we can't.

please stop comparing of guns to things that they do not compare to, such as cars, alcohol, etc. the only thing guns compare to is other guns.

the dems should have advocated complete repeal of the 2nd amendment but settled for the limitations in that failed bill. that way the nra would have at least agreed to what was in that most recent bill, such as background checks and magazine capacity limits. they always place their end goal as what should be their compromise point. they did the same thing on health care.

  • Authorities: Student shoots self in Ohio classroom

    Published: April 29, 2013

    http://www.bnd.com/2013/04/29/2596911/a ... -self.html

CINCINNATI — A student at an all-male parochial high school pulled out a gun in a classroom Monday morning and shot himself in an apparent suicide attempt, police said.

The youth was taken to a hospital, and there appeared to be no threat to other students at La Salle High School, a private school west of Cincinnati that was immediately put on lockdown as a precaution, police said.

At around 8 a.m., "a student produced a gun inside one of the classrooms and shot himself, and we're dealing with that now," Green Township Police Chief Bart West told reporters. School officials said the shooting was during the first class period of the day.

West said the student apparently was trying to kill himself, but he had no other information on why he fired the shot. He said authorities weren't aware of any threats made concerning the school or any other students. Authorities said all other students were safe.

Students, some in tears, gathered in the school gym, and school officials said they were organizing an orderly dismissal as parents came to pick them up.

A school official said counselors were meeting with students, and officials were talking to students to try to learn more about the student who fired the shot.

"We just ask that you pray for him and his family," said Greg Tankersley, La Salle's director of community development. "It's a tragic situation for this young man."

He said the youth was "fighting for his life." A message was left at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center about the student's condition.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese sent additional counselors to the school, he said, and a priest went to the hospital where the student was taken. Tankersley said he wouldn't release other information about the student at this point.

In the aftermath of last year's fatal shootings of three students in Chardon High School in northeast Ohio and December's Sandy Hook Elementary shooting rampage in Connecticut, most schools have taken steps to increase security. In Ohio, that's included taking shooting prevention and response training courses offered by the state attorney general and updating safety procedures with police.

"We always have concerns about school security," West said, but he added that La Salle "did an excellent job" in responding Monday. He said township police had met recently with school officials to review their safety plan.

"We're going to go back and look at everything," Tankersley replied when asked about a gun getting into the school. But he added that Monday's top priority was the condition of the wounded student and the well-being of the others.

point is, people are getting killed by guns every day. by accident, on purpose, by their own hand etc. the common thing is the tool used. the problem is we are not even able to investigate changing gun laws. that is the problem.

did you not see my articles where this happened to responsible people during gun classes and lessons?

do you think if a chainsaw had been the tool used we would not be looking into a way of keeping them out of the hands of people who are mentally ill or criminals?

I don't think we would be looking at ways to keep chainsaws out of people's hands :?
but I would think we would be much more proactive for the mentally ill and in putting criminals
away, not giving them revolving prison door.

But then I wonder constantly why there is not more noise and action involving these solutions.
