I'll never forget when Clinton flew to Rwanada and delivered his 'apology speech' about how the western world failed them. It was a quick little speech and they never even shut the airplane down he flew in on.

Right, and it's since been shown that Clinton et al were fully aware of the genocide occurring at the time, something that they denied.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2004/mar/31/usa.rwanda
President Bill Clinton's administration knew Rwanda was being engulfed by genocide in April 1994 but buried the information to justify its inaction, according to classified documents made available for the first time.

Senior officials privately used the word genocide within 16 days of the start of the killings, but chose not to do so publicly because the president had already decided not to intervene.

Intelligence reports obtained using the US Freedom of Information Act show the cabinet and almost certainly the president had been told of a planned "final solution to eliminate all Tutsis" before the slaughter reached its peak.

Another book regarding the experience that was worth reading was, We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families by Philip Gourevitch.

I have this book, but still haven't gotten around to reading it. I actually asked my Mum to fish it out of the garage and send it out to me just last week.

Im asking all those who are from other countries what they think about this philosophy! Dont think of your country in particular, think of all the weak, poor nations here. If you are from the US, sit back and watch this thread for once! Dont sabatoge it! Also, if you dont believe in God, thats fine, read on anyways.

I believe that God's intentions for all of mankind is for his children to have Individual Liberty and Freedom to pursue their own Individual Salvation and their own identity. We as the United States have formed a country that empowers the individuals and states to control and hold to account the central govt. The US is blessed by God to have the unique opportunity and responsibility to defend the weak and poor, promote Liberty and Freedom, stand for "The People" over any centralized power or govt. within that nation. We are to stand on these principles and values to help the people who are oppressed by their govt! The weak, poor and sick people of the world have hope that we are fighting for them on many different levels. We are blessed to have the capability to do what we do! We acknowledge that blessing and are thankful for having that unique responsibilty and opportunity. This is what I have learned and envision to be American Exceptionalism!

Again, for all you haters out there....we are thankful and blessed for this opportunity, this is not us being "prideful"

This is us understanding our role and being grateful for it!

    Your thoughts?

heres what ive learnt about american exceptionalism...

20.9 million current day slaves?...there were more than 21 million in the past!

Do you have any evidence that there were 21 million in the past? And if there were, then does a drop of 0.001 million mean that the "American Experiement" has been a success?

I said there were 20.9 million slaves in the World today, and I posted the evidence. You said there used to be 21 million. Where's your evidence? And I didn't say the number today outnumbers the totals from all of human history, I said it's more than 'at any time in history'. There's a difference.

So, where does that leave your quaint little god-given "American Experiement"?

first off.... kudos for figuring out which country i call home without me even having to give you a hint.

but tbh i doubt i could get into a deep and meaningful discussion with you about the origins about my country and how it differs from the founding of the united states of america cause i doubt you know enough australia history or british and irish history and how they relate to the history of my country to sustain such a discussion... but what i will say is i do not support how settler states are founded. i do not support the oppression of native peoples, or any peoples for that matter. i do not support the genocidal intent of the founders of my country nor do i support the notion of terra nullius, upon which the claiming of the east coast of new holland by the brits was pronounced.

I love how you think you're giving me a history lesson. Of course I know that slavery existed for thousands of years before it existed in America, and you should know that it still exists in the many of the countries America currently does business with. Now here's a lesson for you that you may have forgotten about... Slavery was justified in the Bible...

However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46)

Maybe it's pointless to ask again, but if God wanted America to be the country that ends slavery, why was it started by slaveholders such as George Washington and James Madison? Great Britain ended slavery in 1833, 30 years before America... why aren't they the better candidate for God's beacon of freedom?

  • Slavery will always exist in any world! Cant you look deep enough as to why? There will always be hard labor that needs done and there is never enough money to pay everyone! There is SOME food, so if the slaves eat just enough food, then the next day they are able to do more of the work! Its common sense. Is it nice? NO
Is it just? NO. Is it realistic? In a world of human beings-YES. We do not live in a Theoretical world as I have stated before. Many people like to cling on to these subjects to denounce captialism and the USA, well again, America didnt invent slavery! Capitalism gave us a chance to minimize slavery and bad work conditions. It gave us a chance to give women rights and give our children a better quality of life. Capitalism also provided the entire world with more wealth from charity and economics than anything else. American Capitalism is imported as a way of doing business and working in many parts of the world. Look at Hong Kong, they are booming because they have accepted Capitalism. The USA is probably %60 Capitalism and %40 Socialism. Its the Socialism percentage that is driving up our debt! That will be the part that brings us down. You say you dont like Capitalism? Well point me to something better? Show me a specific example. We have given humans the best chance they have ever had with American Capitalism! AND its a socialist president and socialism that will bring us down!

Capitalism is not the problem....Capitalists are! Humans will ruin anything! Its not the system....its the greed! However the system of socialism is a failure ultimately!

America is the newest big nation and has the oldest govt. running democracy. That says alot!

Capitalism did NONE of that. In fact, capitalism tries to do the very opposite of that. At a time in US history in which Carnegie and Rockefeller etc. etc and on and on.....these men, these corporations opposed at every turn every single thing you have mentioned here.

Yep 27 million current slaves. I don't want to derail the thread, but since this was mentioned I think it should be noted that human trafficking is a huge issue in the US. People often focus on Asia and South America (which also involves a lot of Americans perpetrating this crime in other countries), but it happens right here. Atlantic City has a big problem with human trafficking, as I'm sure a lot of cities in the US do. It's hard to get an estimate in terms of numbers because of the nature of the crime. This doesn't result because of anyone needing to do the "hard labor of the world." No child needs to do the hard labor of being raped by a pedophile. Keeping people impoverished plays a large role, as does the belief that some people are more valuable or more deserving than others; the arrogance of treating others as property or "less than." As long as some believe they are inherently superior to others or quest to have power over them, horrors like this will always continue. Loving our country doesn't mean turning a blind eye to its history or its problems. There are horrible things that happen the world over, but they also happen right here in our backyard...attention and energy needs to be focused there as well.
