people I come from a country that has ONE massacre and then bam guns were banned.... the crime rate didn't move but gun related murders went down so much.

the idea that this happens and everyone thinks they will feel safer with more guns is a purely American power trip thing and it sickens me.

That a good fact worth looking at here, Zoso. I heard and read it elsewhere. Thank you for pointing it out again.

Chemicals often cause cancer. Chemicals are often used to "cure" cancer. That's often how we fight cancer. You hit something that is bad for you with something that is bad for you and hope it works. What about preventing cancer in the first place?

I hate making generalizations, but my experience is that people who love guns don't want solutions, they want guns.

Prevention is the key! My head is spinning from all these suggestions but we are refusing to see the true cause of all these problems. I believe we should control guns but we need to examine mental health issues and health insurance in this country. But most importantly, we need to reexamine the fucked up modern society we live in and how it damages us.

    Well said, riotgrl.

I will say, bad on me. So many of the gun proponents just can't rant and rave enough about guns, even in the close aftermath of tragedy. We should be talking about solutions but I fall for the debate. Bad on me. Bad.

Not bad on you Brian. You are always a force of positivity and you usually have suggestions for ways to improve and better ourselves and society, even if some don't always agree with you. And the debating is not bad, I think we are all trying to make sense of it and that's why we are going in circles. I know I feel such a sense of loss and no way to control nor help nor see the light at the end of the tunnel. I want and need solutions otherwise it just seems to bleak :(
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

if kids are getting shot in school by assault rifles absolutely. ohh the bad government I hear you say.. you are more worried about the government controlling you then kids safety.

cars = built to transport and require more safety measure then guns
Guns = invented to kill with lapsed safety measure in America.

My guns have never harmed anyone. And yes I do worry about giving the government more control, I believe that it has shown it cannot be trusted.

works in other countries that are deemed democratic.

your guns haveb't hurt anyone yet.... how about the story last week where a gun accidently went off in the person's pants and killed the gun owners daughter..... just for example.

I stand by my statement. You can find ten articles about accidents with guns in a country with 365M people, and I can find hundreds more where common household items have killed or maimed people in accidents or through intentional use.

My point is that you don't punish the ones that are responsible people.

He could have killed her with a pillow. I'm done going round and round with you guys. All you want to do is punish law abiding people instead of focusing on why these cowards do what they do.

No... stick around. I realize it's a very difficult argument to try and make on your part- in the face of such tragedy, overwhelming statistics, and logic- but keep trying.

And 20 kids + 7 adults with same pillow? Don't be so flippant.

The point is that, whilst the guns in your possession have never been used to hurt/maim/kill (at least a human being - I don't know if you kill animals), you are never sure they won't. This woman didn't think one would kill her and 27 other human beings. You don't know if someone in your home, a partner, a child, a brother or sister, another family member may just have an 'episode' and lay their hands on accessible guns - yours. Just like it happened for this tragedy.

    here is valid question.

why did all 31 pro gun senators decline the offer to go on meet the press this morning to defend their positon?? david gregory said that every one of them declined the chance to come on. this is funny to me because the republican senators like mccain never turn down a chance to be on tv....

did the nra not get them their talking points in time? or did they realize that they can not defend their postion to the american people without hurting themselves politically?? or do the republicans realize that they can not blame the president for their failure to support responsible gun laws on this one?

either way it is cowardice. the american people need to hear both sides so they can make up their minds on where they stand.

also, diane feinstein just said that on day one of the new congress they are introducing bills in the house and senate to ban all future imports, sales, purchases, and possessions of assault rifles and magazines/clips that hold more than 10 rounds.

now before you pro gun people explode on democrats and blame them for trying to do something to prevent these massacres in the future, maybe blame the countless murderers who have killed people with these guns for fucking it up for all of you.

  • bummer man, hopefully if that does come to pass it will take a long time like most things in government. i just don't have the bones to stock up on assault rifles and mags right now. not only that but prices would be really high from all other gun owners doing the same thing. oh wells, only time will tell.

the way i understand the bill, if you own one now you are ok. it just goes into effect on future purchases and sales etc. you are probably going to have to regester the AR that you already own so you do not get in trouble after the proposed law goes into effect.
