Much agreed, polaris. What a catalyst for that.

So fucking sad all around. Actually, the word "sad" doesn't even come close.

I'm not sure any words do, right now.

Oh, I totally agree, Hedonist. There is no word that fills the void right now.

What? The 2nd amendment intended for the citizens to have whatever weaponry they needed to STAND UP TO THE GOVERNMENT.
If you want to argue the obsolescence of that point, then fine. But this is just disingenuous.

I certainly don't want anyone who is thinking about arming themselves against the government having access to guns! They are simply paranoid and aggressive people - a dangerous combo.

As incomprehensible as that is, I can't imagine the terror those poor children went through. I'm trying (not) to imagine my 5 year old being in that classroom. It is so heartbreaking.

Thoughts and hope for the survivors to make it through ok. Nothing is more precious than your children and the thought of the chain of events that resulted in those poor souls being in that classroom just takes your breath away.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

NEWTOWN AND THE MADNESS OF GUNS
    Posted by Adam Gopnik

After the mass gun murders at Virginia Tech, I wrote about the unfathomable image of cell phones ringing in the pockets of the dead kids, and of the parents trying desperately to reach them. And I said (as did many others), This will go on, if no one stops it, in this manner and to this degree in this country alone—alone among all the industrialized, wealthy, and so-called civilized countries in the world. There would be another, for certain.
Then there were—many more, in fact—and when the latest and worst one happened, in Aurora, I (and many others) said, this time in a tone of despair, that nothing had changed. And I (and many others) predicted that it would happen again, soon. And that once again, the same twisted voices would say, Oh, this had nothing to do with gun laws or the misuse of the Second Amendment or anything except some singular madman, of whom America for some reason seems to have a particularly dense sample.

And now it has happened again, bang, like clockwork, one might say: twenty dead children—babies, really—in a kindergarten in a prosperous town in Connecticut. And a mother screaming. And twenty families told that their grade-schooler had died. After the Aurora killings, I did a few debates with advocates for the child-killing lobby—sorry, the gun lobby—and, without exception and with a mad vehemence, they told the same old lies: it doesn’t happen here more often than elsewhere (yes, it does); more people are protected by guns than killed by them (no, they aren’t—that’s a flat-out fabrication); guns don’t kill people, people do; and all the other perverted lies that people who can only be called knowing accessories to murder continue to repeat, people who are in their own way every bit as twisted and crazy as the killers that they defend. (That they are often the same people who pretend outrage at the loss of a single embryo only makes the craziness still crazier.)

So let’s state the plain facts one more time, so that they can’t be mistaken: Gun massacres have happened many times in many countries, and in every other country, gun laws have been tightened to reflect the tragedy and the tragic knowledge of its citizens afterward. In every other country, gun massacres have subsequently become rare. In America alone, gun massacres, most often of children, happen with hideous regularity, and they happen with hideous regularity because guns are hideously and regularly available.

The people who fight and lobby and legislate to make guns regularly available are complicit in the murder of those children. They have made a clear moral choice: that the comfort and emotional reassurance they take from the possession of guns, placed in the balance even against the routine murder of innocent children, is of supreme value. Whatever satisfaction gun owners take from their guns—we know for certain that there is no prudential value in them—is more important than children’s lives. Give them credit: life is making moral choices, and that’s a moral choice, clearly made.

All of that is a truth, plain and simple, and recognized throughout the world. At some point, this truth may become so bloody obvious that we will know it, too. Meanwhile, congratulate yourself on living in the child-gun-massacre capital of the known universe.

Anyway, I came across this today:

An article on the Free Republic website concerning the massacre in Newton, CT. These people are so repulsive; I am ashamed to have them as fellow Americans and fellow human beings. Fuck that, they are the scum of the Earth, they are subhumans. Repulsive Neanderthals.

"US President Obama Cries Over School Shooting"

Posted on Friday, December 14, 2012 5:51:28 PM by Tailgunner Joe

US President Barack Obama wept as he addressed the nation in the aftermath of the school shootings in Connecticut.
Mr Obama paused repeatedly as he struggled to keep his composure while speaking of the children who had been killed and the milestones in their lives they would never have - birthdays, graduations, weddings.
"Our hearts are broken today," he said, at times using a finger to wipe tears at the corners of his eyes.
Mr Obama said he had reacted to news of the elementary school shooting first as a parent.
He added that he and First Lady Michelle would do what any other parent in America would do - "hug our children a little tighter".
"There is not a parent in America who does not feel the same overwhelming grief I do," he said.
Mr Obama called for "meaningful action" regardless of politics.

He is a fraud. He has killed more kids with his votes than all school shooters combined. And all the victims of his legislation won’t have birthdays either. Why no tears for them?

I saw him motion like he was wiping away a tear but I never saw any tears. Also, I found it interesting that when he scratches his face while talking about an opponent he uses his middle finger but when pretending to wipe away a tear he uses his index finger. Wouldn’t he use the same finger each time?

This was in a wealthy area; I don’t believe for a minute that Obama cares a whit about these wealthy white children.

I’m sure they were fake tears. Sociopaths don’t feel the pain of others. They are only capable of inflicting it.
IMO Obama shows all the classic signs of narcissistic sociopathy.
The tears were intended to garner sympathy FOR him. Classic manipulative narcissistic behavior.
I would believe GWB’s tears. I would even believe Bill Clinton’s tears. But I don’t buy tears from Obama. Not for a second.

His crying for the loss of these children is like Clinton crying at the funeral of Ron Brown.

THIS!! Does he cry when giving out a Medal of Honor like GWB? Nah. Does he cry when seeing the caskets of our brave troops who paid the ultimate price? Nah. As we speak he and his handlers are figuring out how big an opening this gives for grabbing guns from law abiding citizens. Countdown starts now . . .

I know that when I am about to lose it, it is not the tears that start first. It is the voice that cracks, followed by facial control, and lastly the tears flow.
It is interesting, than even as he paused, his voice never cracked or even showed signs of sadness. Plus, no matter how hard I tried, I could not find the invisible tears that he was wiping off his eyes and face.

I thought Obama's words were appropriate, genuine, and didnt bring in politics.
Its just a sad, sad day in our nation, and its good to hear his words...

actually despite his trailing statement, "regardless of politics", this phrase IS political:
"we are going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent tragedies like this, regardless of the politics...."

What "meaningful action" do you think he is referring to?
i'm not being a dick. i'm just making an observation.
do you think he is talking about getting back to puritan morals,
installing metal detectors in every school in the country,
or do you think he is very obliquely suggesting federal regulations?
REGARDLESS OF THE POLITICS that are SURE to crop up after such a suggestion?

I know i'm reading between lines here, but give me ANY alternative interpretation.
any alternative interpretation for MEANINGFUL action that will need to happen REGARDLESS OF THE POLITICS ... ie ... this action is going to STIR UP A BUNCH OF POLITICS ...

I see what you're getting at, but I guess I wasn't clear. His main objective wasn't political. I think they knew that we are all confused and maybe feeling like there are no answers for this kind of tragedy. It's becoming more common and it seems we're losing ground to unbalanced folks who snap and go on a killing spree. My point was that Obama seemed to say we've got a problem and we need to take a deeper look into it and stop fucking around. But he didn't reference healthcare, identifying mentally unstable people, or and gun legislation changes. His delivery was that of comfort and heartfelt sorrow for his fellow Americans. That's what I took from it.

So apparently, and these are just the early reports so they may or may not be correct, the guns the wacko used were taken from his mom who had legally purchased and registered them. Is it too soon to say she was irresponsible as a parent to not notice anything wrong with her child mentally before this happened and irresponsible as a gun owner to allow him to access these guns?

I'm in Australia - I got up this morning and saw posts on facebook and read reports on msn. I couldn't even get through the news article without bursting into tears. I had to leave the room because my 7 year old and 10 year old were sitting right next to me and I didn't want them to ask me why I was crying. I went into the bedroom and told my husband, and cried. I just kept saying "I don't understand." And I don't. I don't understand the horror and senselessness of it. I have four children, and after I calmed down and got ready for work, I hugged them very very tightly and told them I loved them very very much. I tell them everyday anyway, but today I just needed to hug them tighter.

I don't think I want to enter into the debate on gun control except to say that it works here - it was implemented after the Port Arthur massacre in the mid 90's. It was unpopular, but it works. People are getting progressively stupider and because of the actions of the minority, the majority must accept that they need gun regulations. The US has the highest amount of gun related deaths in the world. I'm sorry, but that is appalling.

That's all I will say on the matter for now. It's just too distressing to think about.

Sorry if this was already mentioned, and I am in support of changes to gun control laws, but just wanted to point out what is being highlighted in the news, which is that that big assault rifle was 1) in the guy's car so not used in this attack i am assuming, and 2) couldn't be legally purchased in CT anymore (the assumption being that if his mother owned it legally, it would have had to have been bought prior to stricter gun ownership laws in that state (1994 I think they said?).

Aside from 9/11, this may be the most sickening thing that has happened in this country in my life. How the fuck can someone look at a classroom full of 5 year olds and put a fucking bullet in their head. A grown fucking man walks into a school and shoots fucking kindergarteners. Fucking 5 year olds.

This fucks body should be dumped on the side of the road

It is sickening and it is fucked up, Cliffy, and even though it didn't happen to most of us the fact that this kind of thing happens at all not to mention over and over again is reason for us to be in tears and be upset and be angry and start making changes.

We're a sick and fucked up culture (and not the only one)- a culture of blood. History proves that out. We need a new history. We need a new start up and we need to change our cultural thinking. It wouldn't hurt if we looked to the natural world for a guide. Senseless killing rarely happens in other species. It's a human sickness.
