I agree that it is easier to say that "religious nutjobs" are killing and attacking our Embassies. Of course, we have had Embassies attacked numerous times by non-"religious nutjobs" in the past. So why is this happening now is the question.
IMHO, has nothing to do with a reaction to the movie or whatever. That is just an excuse for the current behavior(and it seems that the Libya incident may have been influenced by, or at least exploited by, terrorists). There are more fundamental issues that need to be addressed. The fact that all three of the countries in question are highly unstable with no real central government is an issue. Most of the people protesting are young males that don't even know what the fuck is actually going on. They are just doing it. Religion may play a part (or be an excuse), but there are cultural and historical issues that have nothing to do with religion that are far more important. America's problem is that we have fucked up a number of times in the region, never show remorse or admit fault. We do plenty of good in the region as well, but the lingering ill-will of mistakes will take precedent, especially since America is generally arrogant and as a nation and culture has a phobia for feelings of guilt.
I'm not sure how you can compare American extremism to extremism elsewhere. America has one of the most stable (believe it or not) governments in the world, and was not created on the whims of the so-called Great Powers less than a hundred years ago and then colonized, as most of these countries were. There are institutional problems within these nations that date back centuries. They are dealing with them now, because now is the first chance they have really had to. That is not to excuse any violence or condone it, it is simply to put things in perspective.
