Water Guns Banned, Handguns Allowed at GOP Convention
http://news.yahoo.com/water-guns-banned ... itics.html
In the politically-charged and likely protest-filled streets of Tampa, Fla., during the Republican National Convention in August, water guns will be strictly prohibited. Concealed handguns, on the other hand, will be perfectly legal.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott said this week that banning handguns from downtown Tampa during the convention, as the city's Mayor Bob Buckhorn requested, "would surely violate the Second Amendment."
"It is unclear how disarming law-abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law," Scott said in a letter to Buckhorn Tuesday, emphasizing the words "law-abiding." "It is at just such times that the constitutional right of self defense is most precious and must be protected from government overreach."
Buckhorn said today that he was "disappointed" by Scott's decision, but that the city will "plan and train accordingly."
Tampa officials are expecting thousands of protesters to descend on the Florida metropolis for the GOP convention. While no handguns will be allowed inside the convention, which is being protected by the Secret Service, concealed carry license-holders will be able to carry their weapons in the streets surrounding the convention.
They will not, however, be able to have "super soaker" water guns, sticks, poles, portable shields or glass bottles.
Buckhorn said last month that the state law, which prohibits the city from temporarily banning handguns, makes the city "look silly" because officials can prohibit water guns but not real ones, The Associated Press reported.
"There is no reason to have a concealed firearm in downtown Tampa that week," Buckhorn said in Wednesday's statement. "And, to be clear, I am far less concerned with those who have concealed weapons permits than the ones who may somehow acquire a weapon and use it to create mayhem."
James Davis, a spokesman for the Republican National Convention, said party officials are not worried that concealed handguns will create security problems.
"We think we are going to have a safe and successful convention," Davis said. "The local police and Secret Service will make sure of that."
The city plans to have 4,000 law enforcement personnel in the downtown area during the party convention, a move Buckhorn said would create "safe environment" where "a firearm should not be necessary for self-defense."
The Republican National Convention will be held at the Tampa Bay Times Arena, Aug. 27-30.

The non-banning of real firearms seems to just be adhering to Florida state law.
(catefrances, there's a woman out here who was sprayed during a DUI stop with a high-power pepper-spray gun and has lost her sight in both eyes...not to take away from the damage that true guns can inflict, but those too can do some mighty harm)
...and I live in this beautiful and politically charged state. That said who knows what they could put in a water gun but with real bullets and a real gun you KNOW what you are going to get.

it is ok to bring real guns that can kill people to a protest and a convention, but you can't take a water gun. what is more of a threat, getting doused with pepper spray or getting your head blown off? to me it seems that real guns being allowed there could only inflame tensions. the threat of real guns being there will also intimidate people from actively taking part in the demonstration, and this intimidation is squelching free speech and freedom of assembly. all because the people with the real guns have the real power in that situation.

Good point.
Though the guns will be concealed. They are already allowed on the streets. I am sure there have been previous protests in Tampa.
Protesters could have conceal and carry permits as well.

we need someone to make a "it's florida" picture we can paste into these threads ...
can someone please tell me the purpose of a CONCEALED weapon?

the purpose is self defense. You can argue that it isn't needed...I would disagree because put simply and unfortunately for anyone who has to carry them, it isn't needed until it is needed.

how about we 1-allow the water guns, 2- disallow real guns, or 3- let everyone bring a real or fake one. whichever they want... it seems that they are giving the concealed carry people more power in this situation.
honestly, do you really need to take a fucking gun into a rah rah rah convention??? jesus...

Hugh, it's all about fear, control, paranoia and violence or bad choice of neighborhood. True, sometimes the latter is not a matter of choice but why make a bad neighborhood worse by packing? I don't get it either.

why would anyone take a 'real' gun?

Good question, catefrances!
What puzzles me is why so much focus on guns. I live in a very conservative county and I'm fairly certain statistics will show that conservatives tend more often to be pro-gun and yet even here I doubt very many people carry concealed weapons. (True, if they're concealed I wouldn't know it but I think I'm right about this anyway.) How many people everywhere actually carry concealed weapons? A small percentage. Why proliferate something that only increases the possibility of violence. Why all this business about guns? I don't get it. (And yes, I've been through and lived in some rough neighborhoods.)

most especially with the hate and division in our country.
When the lady congressman was shot and the elementary school girl died along with
five others and 19 injured it would have been nice to have had someone around to have prevented that.
Instead it took two to tackle the shooter after all that damage was done.
One trained sensible person, a hero, may have prevented many deaths.
I wonder how those opposed to the license to carry would feel when they look down a barrel,
get that cold chill run down their spine, a split second and a one breath left,
wishing the f*** someone would come save their life, then hear the gunshot,
then realize someone licensed to carry just gave them their life back.
I wonder if they would be thankful?
I would be...
bad guys got guns folks, good guys need um
Edit: And I say this as someone who owns a shotgun. Locked in a safe and used for hunting.
I was robbed at gunpoint, they wanted nothing more than money, but if me or my friends had a gun, someone would surely be dead. So, yes, Gabby Giffords happens, and if someone had a gun, then perhaps some people there would have lived, but in an alternate world where people are pulling guns out when they get robbed, there would be a whole lot more deaths.
Godfather.
if this woman knew how to use a gun and had one...who knows..
