For many people, the definitive soundtrack of the mid-1990s was a band out of Virginia with unusual instrumentation and an unmistakable sound. Born and partially raised in South Africa, Dave Matthews was a bartender in the college town of Charlottesville when he founded the Dave Matthews Band in 1991. Two decades on, the group has sold 40 million records and become one of the biggest live acts in the world.

The Dave Matthews Band has a new studio album, its seventh, called Away From the World. Things have changed for the group since 1991: Matthews is a father now, and this album is the group's second since the 2008 death of founding member LeRoi Moore. Here, Matthews speaks with NPR's Guy Raz about what has kept the surviving members together — and performs two songs from the new album on ukulele and guitar.
    Interview Highlights

On the title Away From the World

"It kind of is suggesting that all of us are sort of removed from the world, in a way, in our minds. That we're all in the same boat, even though we're sort of locked in our own heads."

On growing up in Apartheid-era South Africa

"Being a white South African, I enjoyed the better things that that country gave to a small percentage of its population. But [I had] a mother that was so devoted to making sure that we knew that to be credited or discredited for something about yourself that you were born with, that you had the inability to change — whether it's the color of your skin or anything about you — was just the worst kind of crime. ... The guys who worked at my uncle's dairy, I'd sneak over there and — I was in Africa so we didn't have to worry about it — and smoke pot with them when I was a teenager, and drink with them and play music. And more than play, I'd listen to these guys play music. That felt almost like a revolutionary act, and then, at the same time, I got all the gift from it."

On the song 'Gaucho' and the new album's themes of change

"I don't think that 'good can win.' I don't think everything is going to get peachy ever. But I think we have to fight for what we believe in. I also get very disheartened by the shallowness of the debates we have. Nothing is black or white, nothing's us or them. But then there are magical, beautiful things in the world. There's incredible acts of kindness and bravery, and in the most unlikely places, and it gives you hope."

On the future of the Dave Matthews Band

"I can remember saying I can't imagine that I'm going to be doing this when I'm 45 — and I'm 45. And so I don't know if there's a place that we need to go to. But it's also a sort of interesting challenge to try and work with the same group of people, because there's a uniqueness to it — of trying to get past all the things that relationships have when we're working together. ... There's four of us that have been in the band for more than 20 years. It's interesting that our love for each other really revolves around the music we make together. We're not in the same age group, we didn't come up in the same places, but we really do have a unique sort of love affair when we're playing music together. And it gets stranger and stranger, but it's good."

sitting in my hotel room in mountain view resting up for shoreline tonight

gonna be tough to top last night...a nearly 2:45 set and the band was on fire...

seven and eh hee got the crowd going
if only is my favorite off aftw and it is great live...lots of potential to be a epic jam
rhyme and reason & dreaming tree with stanley jordan...unbelievable
first live performances of rooftop and snow outside...sounded great but will needed to be played more to work them out
might be the best two step i've ever seen...added a new breakdown and an extended ending...carter's nuts!
stephan played the star spangled banner at the beginning of watchtower which closed the show

the crowd around me blew but the crowd in general was good...on to round 2!
  • Enjoy Round 2 ! :D I'm jealous :corn:
  • Anticipating deluxe package in mail tomorrow or next day ! ;)

very mellow show ...LITHOG, Belly Belly Nice, Mercy ...>Out of My Hands really took the crowd out i thought...brought them back with grey st...Satellite & Lie In Our Graves with Stanley jordan was cool

seven and ants finish the main set off strong and the encore of hallowbillies ended the show on an up note :D

Out Of My Hands always takes a lot of crap because it does lose the crowd but ive always thought it was a nice little tune. Hallowbillies is awesome! got to hear it Camden 2 which closed my run of DMB shows for the summer (hopefully Fall tour announcement is not too far away)

Very mellow show indeed, my wife has seen them over 20 times and she was highly disappointed. It was kind of sad that Stanley Jordan was the highlight of a dmb show. We still had a good time and we had good seats, thanks to her fan club tix, but it was a weird setlist. Picked up the double clear vinyl today and so far it seems pretty good.

After a couple listens, Sweet is the only tune I really don't like. Really love Drunken Soldier, as well as If Only, Rooftop, and Gaucho. Hope for a fall tour announcement in the near future. Would love to see them in Charlottesville

My only complaint would be that there are only 11 new songs. Sorry for being greedy.

I didn't even realize when i bought the album, but i apparently bought the deluxe version which has 3 live songs on it as well . Gaucho, Sweet, & Mercy.

    great show last night but...

the show could ever really get a good flow and dave really doesn't get the la crowd...these people have the attention spans of gnats on meth so to have the "album release party" in la was probably not a good idea

highlights for me were raven with stanley jordan, water/wine at the end of the riff, an awesome jimi thing and timestep (why do the "fans" hate time bomb so much? :?)

best show of the 3 was irvine...already looking forward to more shows!

I've always liked Time Bomb a lot, its a fun song imo. I think ppl are getting bored because things seem to be the same lately. He used to impov more at the beginning of Two Step and now it seems like he is mostly just doing the Time Bomb intro. Even the setlists this year repetitive in some respects. I went to both Jones Beach and both Camden shows and they seemed similar with few changes. This is not me complaining, just trying to explain what some ppl might be thinking based on what Ive be reading from show reviews and what not. In 2008, my friend and I were talking to the guy next to us before the second Camden show and he said something that has stuck with me, "Dave is at a point in his career where he can do whatever the fuck he wants, and if some people don't like it, Dave doesnt care." A little more variety in the setlists wouldnt hurt but im gonna keep going to as many shows as i'm able to get to because it's always a fun time. (PJ, please tour more like Dave does!)

well, i've never been able to understand the uber fan...especially the set list naysayers that sit at their computer and complain about every song...yeah, i've been spending too much time on ants the past few days

of course dave can and is doing whatever he wants...just reading the comments at ants i do agree that the setlists have been somewhat uninspired...and ending both la shows with timestep? would've loved to see an epic warehouse close out the show

but this is me not complaining...i could go to 3 more shows like these and be totally happy
